Overview

GT-EL-34M XF2 Dual Getter - Matched Duet
Reproduction of a classic EL-34 XF2 Pair Getter tube.

The GT-EL34M was shown at NAMM. This tube is based upon a tube which is considered something of an icon to EL34 users in both the audio world and guitar amp world. There were a number of variants of the original tube and GT chose the classic XF2 dual getter version to reproduce. This tube is now available in matched quads and duets.

Low-rated tubes have early break-up and distortion, wide range and softer attack good for rock and blues solos. Medium-rated tubes offer normal performance, great dynamic range/attack and are the best all around rating type for all styles of playing. High-rated tubes have the most dynamic range and the most clean power/less break-up for power players, jazz guitarists and bass amps.

GT EL34M

By Philip LaRocco

from Oregon

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

I bought a matched paired of the Groove Tube EL34M for use in my Headphone Amplifier. The sound is a mixed blessing with a nice natural sounding midrange and fast articulate bass. The Brass also was fast however noticeably brittle or hard, Cymbals sound more like breaking Glass on a polished marble floor. The most disappointing aspect surrounding these tubes for me was the extremely poor customer service I received from Both the Guitar Center and Groove tube. I most often buy from the Internet since I live in a area with no services however with the present economy in such bad shape, I thought I would buy it local this time around. After an 80-mile commute to the Guitar Center for these Tubes, I was content for about 3 weeks where one of the Tubes simply stopped working after operating for less than 2 minutes. No, hum no noise simply as if you unplugged the headphones. So on my next trip to Grants Pass I brought the Tubes with me so as to exchange them for a working pair. I was informed by the Guitar center that they do not guarantee tubes and I would have to send them to groove tubes after requesting from groove tubes and receiving back a return Number them. I always assumed apparently! Incorrectly, that since Groove Tubes have a factory Warranty and since the Guitar center is an Authorized Groove Tube Dealer that I could obtain warranty service by returning the Tubes to the Point of sale. This Experience has Resulted in my going back to buying what I need from the Internet again as the Expense in obtaining warranty service on this item exceeded the cost of buying a new pair of tubes, however, I would buy these or a similar item again from the Guitar center if it was an Emergency and I absolutely needed a item now and it is available and if the item becomes defective and the cost of sending it back to the factory exceeds the New price I will simply discard the item when it becomes defective.

Buyer Beware!

By Greg

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

They sound OK while they last. My friend had one of his blow and take his head with it after a week, I had one blow in a week as well, but thankfully it didn't take anything with it. The second set I had was poorly matched. They were 7mV apart. Guitar Center gave me my money back on the blown set.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

a nice bright tube, and I love to crank up my amp so I didnt expect these to last over a year, considering how much I play they have surpassed my expectations. i wouldn't buy these if your amp is already bright sounding because then the sound may become brittle.

Best current production EL34 hands down

    • Good Quality
    • Vintage Sound

    Cons

    • Difficult To Use

    Best Uses

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

Ok so here's the skinny as I see it. These are the best new production EL34s going, and this is my rationale...

First let me comment on the failure reviews, in most amps these will need to be biased when installed. One downside of internet shopping is sometimes a sales rep will give you very important info you didn't know to ask for. I would be willing to bet many negative "they didn't last" or "almost immediately failed" reviews are because people didn't bias them, and their amp was running them too hot. When these were first released, there were legitimate failure issues, but it's my understanding these have been sorted, so it's far more likely to be user error these days.

Next, the sound. Ok, another bit of background info, a lot of modern affordable amps are designed around the common current production tubes, even a famous vintage tube put in these circuits can sometimes sound worse than what they came with. So if you're hoping this will make your x brand channel switching amp with 900 knobs and switches sound like a vintage Marshall, you may be disappointed. Put these in a single channel amp, vintage reproduction, or very similar, and you will be met with a nice warm but clear tone, that takes adjustments from your eq extremely well. Boost the bass, you get more bass, not a weird boxy increase, or flubby hyped up preamp tone, etc...

If you're looking at these tubes, there's a strong chance you are looking for a tone from the golden era of amplifiers, and while nothing may beet the real deal, there's something to be said for an extremely respectable, if not downright great in its own right, affordable and plentiful replacement. Put them in a vintage or vintage inspired amp, bias them well, (I prefer on the 'cold' side), and you will get a great 'vintage' tone, but new...

      Don't be Deterred

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

Don't be deterred by the negative (reliability) reviews for these tubes. This is the only copy of a double getter Mullard Xf2 out there. I have tried the other top tubes from China (the TAD El34b STR) and Russia (the Tung Sol EL34 b), and these tubes have a better tone. Apparently some people have had bad luck with reliability, but my experience has been nothing but positive. Plus Groove Tubes is owned by Fender now so hopefully that will help. I say take a chance; you'll be glad you did!
