Insane Versatility and Big Money Tone on a Budget!

This head has by far became my favorite piece of equipment. If you're looking for a head that can truly do it all at a price point that's unheard of for new equipment, this is it. I was between the 5150 iii 50w (both 6L6 and EL34), and 120w 6505+. Ultimately I landed on the 50w 6L6, and I have not been able to stop playing it for weeks. The EL34 version is a tad crisper on the high end, but can get tinny fast. The 6L6 doesn't have as much high end standalone, but will give you that fat, thick sound on everything from a clean to full-blast red channel chug. The 6505 is always a great pick, but that thing really only goes either sparkly clean or full on metal with little in between. Overall, to compare, this is a bit warmer and darker than the 6505 across the board. The 6505 will give you crisper and clearer high-gain leads though, vs what you can get from the plain red or blue channel. As gain goes up, things tend to get a little muddy in comparison. A boost pedal is an easy remedy for that though, and get you closer to the 6505 sound. I've had really good results with a Fortin 33. That and a noise gate is a must have to get the most out of this amp, IMO. I run it through a 1960AV cab, and primarily play a Mexi-Strat with a Dave Murray setup. Volume is NO ISSUE at any point playing with an incredibly loud full band. Most of the time at 4-5 is more than enough. With the right cab, this head will work at just about any venue. Then again, at 1, even through my 4x12, it's goes quiet enough to practice at night and not be heard through the house. Only downsides would be the lack of a few knobs. The green/blue share an EQ, resonance and presence is shared across everything, and resonance is in the back. It'd be nice to have totally separate controls for all 3 channels, like the 100w version...but I understand space is limited. Thankfully EVH added separate gain and volume for green/blue though. Overall, EVH/Fender really struck an excellent balance. Buy it!

Red channel dead!

I got a store model shipped to me. Never tried it at my house as I planned on bringing to the store to a/b against the el34 model. Got to the store and fired up the el34 model and played. Then switched over to the 6l6 model I had bought and never even played! To my surprise the red channel was weak and lacked all the gain and volume. The green and blue channels worked fine with no flaws. I'm assuming it was most likely just a bad preamp tube in the red channel section however the el34 model won me over in tone over the 6l6 model.

This is my dream amp I've wanting forever and I finally snagged one and let me tell you, I will be sticking with this amp until the end of time. Weather it be a E34 or a 6L6; EVH is always going to be my go to. The tone is incredible, it's warm, it overall just sounds incredible. It's super loud for a 50W amp so if you plan on making some noise it will deliver. The blue channel is one of the best if not the best rhythm channels you'll ever play on and the clean channel sounds incredible too. 5/5 stars.

  • I will never buy anything from Guitar center ever again !!!!
