Overview

Though it took eight years to create, this collaborative effort between Berklee College of Music and NOTION won't take any time to inculcate into your classroom setting. The NOTION Conducting Curriculum is based on the experience of Berkelee's Composition Department Chair, Dr. Jack M. Jarrett, and his experience as a conductor, programmer, and educator. It is fully adaptable to any classroom size, needs, or style.

Each curriculum workbook contains a copy of PROTEGE and all the NOTION scores used in the curricculum. There's no need to worry about patches or external hardware. All you need is a computer, speakers, and eager-to-learn pupils. And, if you're a bit leery of messing with installations, NOTION will even perform the setup for you.

The range of standard conducting excerpts are presented in a sensible progression, allowing your students a logical process of adding and building on previous lessons. Although there is a set list of scores, you can add other scores you're already familiar with, or purchase new ones from NOTION's online score library if you think your class is ready.

The software gives your students the revolutionary opportunity to conduct with a fully responsive London Symphony Orchestra--albeit in sampled form--every day. Each student assumes a role in the orchestra while one student conducts with the baton, so every one will get a feel for both sides of the real-life conductor/musician relationship. If the class is being conducted on laptops, then students can also work on their techniques any time, anywhere. They can use NTempo to fine-tune a ritardando to their liking, or listen to just the woodwind section of a favorite piece to discover new ways of looking at how music is scored.

All in all, the NOTION Conducting Curriculum system is a lesson plan designed for success, both for the teacher and the student. Try it out for one term, and feel the empowerment in your classroom.
