A new year means new beginnings, new resolutions and, with the annual NAMM show looming, a round of new releases from instrument manufacturers of all kinds. True to that spirit, Sabian rang in 2016 by introducing the new XSR Series to replace the aging Xs20 lineup. Right off the bat, they made some pretty bold claims about the new Sabian XSR Series becoming the best in their class, offering professional performance at a price point within every musician's budget. Of course, only our ears will tell us whether they succeeded, but it's safe to say these cymbals will be popping up in kits everywhere, so it shouldn't be tough to find one to listen to.

Following in the footsteps of the Xs20 cymbals before them, the XSR Series cymbals are designed to produce bright, vintage-like sound that fits into just about any musical style. As you'd expect from such traditional-sounding cymbals, the look is absolutely classic, with a brilliant natural finish on each cymbal. The mid-to-high pitch gives clarity to softer cymbals like the Sabian XSR Series X-Celerator Hi-Hats and XSR Series Ride Cymbal. And when you want a more dramatic effect in the mix, you'll easily get it from the Sabian XSR Series Splash Cymbal, XSR Series Chinese Cymbal, or one of the two styles of crash cymbal: the Sabian XSR Series Fast Crash Cymbal for drummers who like a lighter, nimbler crash; and the XSR Series Rock Crash Cymbal for those who prefer more weight and power.

The greatest thing about percussion is the level of customization it offers, and there's a reason why shell packs don't usually come with cymbals bundled-in: every drummer has his or her preference for these, and we should all be able to choose the ones we like best! If you're looking for cymbals that perform above and beyond what the price tag suggests, the new Sabian XSR Series could be those best cymbals for you - and the best way to find out for sure is to put them to the test.
