Overview

The custom 12-string Martin X1D12E-CST acoustic-electric guitar features a D-14, a dreadnought body designed to produce a powerful, well-balanced tone that is perfect for live performance and in the studio. Pairing the Sitka spruce top with the mahogany-pattern HPL back and sides, the custom X1D12E-CST has a big, punchy tone, with all the sustain you have come to expect from a Martin guitar. The mortise-and-tenon neck joint ensures solid construction of the guitar, with optimal resonant tone, while eliminating drop-off in the finer dynamics.

The Martin guitar's laminate birch neck is a multilayered wood creation, bonding layers of wood under extremely high pressure. The material is then carved and finished in a conventional manner. The end result is a very strong neck that provides definition and articulate sustain from note to note.

The modified low oval neck shape, 25.4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, and 16" radius provide comfort and dexterity when performing intricate movements and progressions along the black Richlite fretboard.

This X Series Martin acoustic guitar comes compete with the Fishman Sonitone. The Fishman Sonitone features a soundhole-mounted preamp with rotary controls for Volume and Tone. The controls are mounted conveniently under the soundhole. All you have to do is plug in and play. You’ll have a great acoustic guitar sound, right out of the box.

Other features include a hand-rubbed satin finish, customized rosette, mahogany HPL headplate and chrome tuners. This guitar has the look and sound of a highly collectible Martin guitar, but goes for a price that
anyone can afford. Embrace the dream of owning your very own Martin guitar, at a price that is too good to pass up.

Case sold separately.

I've been playing for 40 years. I've always wanted a 12 with rich tone and this is it for me.I new after 6 seconds of playing the store demo, this was a guitar I could enjoy playing for hours. I briefly had a Taylor 12 150 I liked but the low tones were not deep enough. What I read in other reviews is this Martin stays in tune, and they were right. It does stay in tune and that's a big plus. I know a lot of purists are skeptical of the HPL High Pressure Laminate back and sides and the Birch Laminated neck falling apart with humidity but I don't think Martin would risk their reputation on junk. The Fishman electronics are good but with the large resonant surface of the Sitka Spruce top it will feed back at close range. For the Price this really a lot of fun. It sounds rich like a Martin. It feels good in your hands. The action is low and easy. You can play it like a campfire guitar and not have to protect it like an art piece.

I find this guitar extremely easy to play as the neck and strings fit my frame and fingers. it's been many years since i took the first guitar (six string) and played as a novice, but experienced. this one really has raised serious interest in playing, learning and improving.

        Outstanding guitar!

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1D12E-CST Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

First, a couple of nits to pick ...
        1. I don't know where GC gets off thinking it's ok for them to garble Martin's model name like that. The proper name for this model is D12X1AE.
        2. There are several errors in the product description. In the body of the text the nut width is noted as 1-11/16", which would be appropriate for a six string guitar, but not a 12. In the features list it is listed as 1.06 (27 mm), which is even more absurd. The nut width on the standard model D12X1AE is 1-7/8". If the "custom" variation for this model is the substitution of the "Wide High Performance Taper" neck then the nut width should be 1-13/16". Also the feature list states a single cutaway. Clearly there is no cutaway.

Now for the good stuff. I purchased the previous iteration of this model, the D12X1 (before electronics were added) in 2009 from the Towson, MD GC. This X1 is particularly well suited for 12 string duty. I have 4 Martin 12's, ranging from this X1 all the way up to a style 40. The X1 holds its headstock high amongst its brethren. Its clarity and freedom from excess overtones mean that interior moving voices come through clearly, especially in DADGAD tuning. The others are "Russian choirs" in comparison. It's much less susceptible to temperature and humidity fluctuations as well. It's the ideal choice for playing meteorologically challenged outdoor festivals.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1D12E-CST Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had been looking for a while for a 12 string to add to my collection of guitars. I played this Martin at Guitar Center, as well as a Taylor and a few others. I always kept coming back to the Martin, and finally purchased it. It immediately became my favorite guitar! It has a beautiful sound, and is also so easy to play. I had read that 12 strings required extra fretting dexterity and that it would take a while to get used to it, but this was not the case. It might be because I also play the mandolin and am used to fretting courses, but it also might just be that the Martin is that easy to play. I like it so much that it may take a while to get back to playing my 6 strings!

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1D12E-CST Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Got it on sale for a hundred dollars off regular price. For the price value I can't imagine that there is a better 12 string Acoustic Guitar anywhere.
The overall look is plain, But I didn't get it for its looks. The sound is big and beautiful. The open chord tones are clear and bright with a strong Bass foundation. Everything you want in a 12 string. It frets very nicely, the action was just right. The pickup sound good.
Overall it is everything you would expect from a Martin Guitar.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1D12E-CST Dreadnought 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Can't beat the sound for the price. This guitar plays much like any other Martin Guitar, but you just don't get the great wood finishes that other models bear. The sound is very bright and full, it has a sturdy construction, but be ready to do some slow neck/ nut adjustments to bring the action into a playable range. The veneer on the backside of the guitar body and neck is relatively fake looking, but it is to be expected when buying a 12-string in this price range from Martin. The Fishman electronics are great, and only required a little bit of tinkering with the balance to get this thing sounding great live. I'd give this a 3.5 star if they let me, just based on the fact that the veneer is a flat material which shows that the grain isn't real as opposed to something that has a glossy finish to mask some of that.

This guitar sounds like it's higher priced cousin the D12-28. I bought mine used and it plays incredible!!! Then action is really low with zero fret buzz all the way up the neck. The trebles are bright and the bass barks, but not over powering. When you strum a chord this thing rings forever!!! I highly recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a great guitar. It made a $5,000 Taylor sound like a beginner's model!!! Then again it IS a Martin.

Got this last week, unable to put it down. 4th gen noiseless pickups really are noiseless! Sound like Jimmy Page thru my Blackstar ID:260 amp (Great amp too BTW!) with this thing! Finish and hardware are flawless. Neck is smooth as silk. It has already turned me into a better player. S-1 switch gives you 5 more sound options over the regular strat. It's body shape hugs yours, very comfortable to play! First Fender I've ever owned as I was a Gibson guy, never liked strats due to the maple neck and the laquer over the frets, this has the EBONY fingerboard and c to d neck with the new heel design in back, great for shorter fingers! A guitar engineering masterpiece. Would buy another one in tobacco burst and rosewood board if my wife let me!

Bought this a while ago, had about 8 months now. Sound is fantastic, deep and rich, interesting non-wood body, spruce top. Recommend the d'addario humidity system to protect it as edges are unbound. I compared it to much more expensive guitars. this sounds way better, looks rather plain. If you are looking to impress your friends with how much you spent on exotic woods etc, this is not for you. If you want to impress them with your sound, this is the one to get.

I went into GC the other day to try this guitar. A guy who walked in the room in front of me picked it up before I did. It was in tune as he first strummed it. It sounded wonderful both Acoustically and through the amp he plugged it into. He never set the guitar down, waived to the guy at the counter and bought it. I couldn't tell you if it felt good to play or not as I never touched it but I imagine it did.

I really like the sound of this guitar. The price was perfect. I tried a $1600 12 string Taylor and I like the rich tone of the Martin much better. I played it for my wife, who has a really good musical ear and she liked the sound of this Martin too. So, I bought it. This was my first Martin guitar since I began playing in 1970. I like the action on this Martin. Sometimes 12 string guitars can be hard to play especially as you move up the neck. Not this one. Great guitar!
