Great for the price.

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

Great sounding rock-n-roll snare for the price. A lot better than the standard that comes with your average drum set. I muted the batter head to remove the higher end ring to get deep sounding rock snare. The hardware (lugs, snare hardware, snare release lever) are all top notch. You can spend a lot more money on a name brand product, but in the studio, who would eve know?

Comments about Mapex MPX Birch Snare Drum:

I bought one of these snares, and for the money spent I am happy with it. I got the 5.5" x 14" model in natural gloss finish and it looks great and goes with any kit. However, because of the very reasonable price, Mapex did skimp on a few things. Here are my impressions:

The Good: Great price, gorgeous looking lacquer finish, 10 lugs per head, and an all birch shell. The finish looks great, although there were a few drips of lacquer on the top bearing edge of my snare. I lightly sanded those spots off with 220 grit sandpaper, and it's fine now. Bearing edges were otherwise excellent. Snare beds are not very deep, but they are there.

The Bad: The really chincy and cheap snare wires. I am not a "snare wire snob"; I'm usually perfectly fine with the factory snare wires on even lower end drums, but these are just beyond chincy, and poorly made. Also, they were only 15 strand. Not adequate on a 14" for full projection and volume. Also, the strainer is not good. It is a copy of a Ludwig P-85, but there is nowhere for the snare straps to be pulled through the strainer mechanism. This makes it impossible to get the snares evenly aligned on the drums, and makes it very hard to get the snare wire tension at the outset. Also, I upgraded to 2.3 mm hoops on both sides of my snare, and when those were installed (only 0.7mm thicker than the factory hoops), the strainer did not have clearance to be "thrown off". The bottom of the strainer was hitting the bottom hoop and could not be turned to the "snares off" position. I ended up upgrading the strainer to a DW MAG (yes they are pricey, but totally worth it). I also upgraded to some "regular" Gibraltar snares (not Purseound) and that made a world of difference.

Overall, this is nicely built snare that sounds very good. At this price point, it's hard to expect top notch "accouterments", but the strainer, and snare wires in particular, are just downright bad. Plan on upgrading those and it becomes MUCH better
