Overview

This package contains a Mackie FreePlay portable music system, along with a mounting system for tilting it up from a floor or a bookshelf, or for mounting it on a pole stand.

Mackie FreePlay (J19263)
The Mackie FreePlay at its core is an extremely portable, personal PA system for performers, presenters and general music lovers. From the stage to the boardroom and the backyard, FreePlay delivers a full range sound with a high-output 8” woofer that adds fullness with a rich, detailed bass response. There are two combo inputs on the rear of the FreePlay to connect a balanced or unbalanced mic, instrument or line-level signal using an XLR or 1/4” connector. That means you can plug in your vocal mics, guitars, keyboards, and more.

The FreePlay is also able to sync with your Bluetooth enabled devices instantly at the touch of a button, so setting up a mic and guitar, then adding some backing tracks from your iPhone is as simple as it sounds. And speaking of sound, the overall sound of the FreePlay is true to Mackie’s long legacy of live sound performance. It’s powerful, with a full-range detail that is well suited for the variety of applications it can handle. At -10dB it has a frequency response from 65Hz to 20kHz with a maximum peak SPL of 114dB, so you’ll have plenty of juice to stand out in the crowd. Right out of the box the FreePlay sounds great, but what fun would it be if you didn’t have control over it? That’s why Mackie included a built-in 4-channel mixer with access to volume, EQ and effects for each channel right from the hardware or via the FreePlay Connect app for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA with Kickstand/Polemount:

This is a really nicely thought out piece of personal equipment. If you are looking for something for just you and an instrument, definitely consider this one. It isn't overly loud but should be ample for small rooms or backyard BBQ's.

The bluetooth connection while streaming music seems to be slightly substandard but you can run a cord from your device's headphone jack to the PA. The mixer app is nicely laid out and works well. I have had some issues with lost connectivity with the app but all you need to do is reboot the app. The PA will continue playing on the last settings.

I wish they would have included a USB port for charging as well. I might have given it a 4.5 star with the charging port.

I you do purchase this, definitely consider the kickstand ($20), bag ($70) and lithium battery ($70). I use the kickstand a lot. Especially for use on a PA speaker stand. The bag is OK and will protect the speakers but total protection from a hard case would have been better IMHO. I did not purchase the lithium battery. Most of my usage will be near AC power. If I ever do need to use it "unplugged", I will opt for the optional 8 D cell batteries instead of the $70 lithium/rechargeable battery.

All in all, it sounds nice. Nothing fantastic but it will get you through in a pinch.

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA with Kickstand/Polemount:

I am a mobile DJ and have been using the Mackie FreePlay since Sept. 2017. This is a very versatile piece of equipment! I use it as an extension speaker where I can't run cables and for hooking up music (recorded and live) for outdoor wedding ceremonies/cocktail music when I am away from AC power. However, you'll need to buy the lithium battery to gain all of these benefits. The battery lasts at least 4 hours (so far in my gigs). The claimed wattage of 150 watts RMS for the central 8" woofer and 37 watts/channel for each left/right channel seems a bit extravagant (although possible since it uses a Class D amplifier), but the sound is loud and clean enough for small, live engagements (vocalist and/or guitarist, for example) in coffee houses, restaurants, and ceremonies. The bluetooth range was about 40 feet indoors (with several walls) and 100 feet outdoors, which I thought was good in comparison with other consumer portable bluetooth speakers I've tested. There are two neutrik-type connectors that allow you to connect XLR or 1/4" cables, as well as a separate stereo 1/8" mini input jack. Also nice is 1/4" mono line level output jack if you want to daisy chain multiple units (although the second unit will be just using a mono signal). The built in reverb is acceptable with its four settings (with more available via the FreePlay Connect app). However, you can only apply the same effect to both channels (I would have liked separate reverb settings for each channel). The input sensitivity of each input changes automatically when you switch between 1/4" (high-level) and XLR (low-level) connectors. I would have liked settings where I could have controlled the input sensitivity manually. Basically, this means you always have to use mics with XLR connectors, and that all high-level inputs must use 1/4" jacks. I bought a female 1/4" to male XLR adapter that "fakes out" the system when I need to get more drive with a 1/4" device (such as when an acoustic guitar is connected).

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA with Kickstand/Polemount:

This is a very versatile little bluetooth speaker with really good sound quality. At peak volume, I would say that it lacks a bit of bass. However, for what this is designed for, it is an awesome little speaker.

If you plan on using it for live performances, I would suggest running your signal through some sort of preamp to achieve peak volume and tone.

If you are planning on only using the bluetooth options, the onboard tone options are enough for most folks.

The biggest problem I had found on it is that the bluetooth signal between the Freeplay and your phone/tablet etc. gets lost when you minimize the window on your device.

Personally, I love this thing. It is just what I needed for pickin' and singin'. And I didn't have to spend $1K on a really great sounding system.
