HONU Turtle Soprano Ukulele Pack

Luna

collapse expand iconDescription

The Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele boasts decorations inspired from traditional Hawaiian body tattoos. Hawaiian tattoo patterns and layout were strongly geometric with many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized shark's teeth.

Includes gig bag, tuner, and chord chart.

The perfect beginers ukulele!!

First off, this is one of the best ukuleles you can buy for the money. The strings suplied are durable, and sound great, and the tuners, while not terribly sharp, get the job done. There is little to no buzzing, even when you get into faster and more intense strumming. The finish and details are quality, as well as the turtle engraving around the sound hole. HOWEVER, it should be noted that the actual look of the wood is different than what the picture indicated. The texture is the same, but the wood is a darker and deeper brown which personally looks much much better that the included picture. All notes and chords sound crisp and clear when tuned well, and I would recommend a $10 Lankai clip on tuner that does a great job. A case is also included. It is a decent quality soft case that will not protect it from a bad fall, but is a good choice for traveling with as it has two back straps and a side handle. The bag also includes a small pouch that can be used for chord charts or a tuner. The action (space between the string and fretboard) is rather small, and the strings are not all that tight which makes playing relatively easy for beginners. Your hands can slide easily along the neck, which makes switching chords and finger picking easy. In review, this is a very very good pick for a ukulele, if your a beginner or someone interested in a soprano. Good luck!

Beautiful, but decidedly flawed

I bought this instrument for my 6 year-old niece; I bought it based on the four 5-star reviews it had gotten, and because it looked like a beautiful instrument. It is, in fact, lovely. The included "tuner" (a pitch-pipe) was way off - the A was fine, but the E was high, the C was low, and the G was high, too. I tried to tune by ear; but the intonation is way off. I used a vibration-sensing tuner, to find the fretted E played on the C-string was more than a quarter-tone high. OK, OK. Cheap uke = lousy intonation. I get it. I realize you shouldn't have grandiose expectations for a budget uke; but even for a starter instrument, it should be possible to tune it properly to itself, or at least get pretty close. Add to that the egregiously bad pitch-pipe, and you end up with a starter player on an out-of-tune instrument (which makes for painful listening!) or a frustrated experienced player. That gets it two stars, despite the pretty turtle design around the sound hole - which is beautiful; and if you want a uke for an accessory, and you don't mind it being impossible to tune satisfactorily, then go for it. But if you're looking for a starter instrument with any sort of longevity at all, then look elsewhere. An inspired learner would almost certainly get frustrated with this one after only a few months and need something better, anyway.

Love how this looks, and the sound is pretty good. However, two of my tuner machines have stripped screws (and I've had it only 2 months), so it's impossible to keep in tune. It'll go out of tune over the course of 20 minutes of playing. I really wanted this to be be more than a "toy," as I'm committed to playing it. But if I want to improve, I'm going to have to upgrade. It's really for someone who only plays every once in a while, not every day.

    fromeh not needed

Okay, so I about this ukulele around a year ago, and a lot has happened. The one bad thing I would say about it is that it is very delicate. I legit had it in its case and apparently, something happened to it and the side burst a huge whole. Luckily I was able to repair it easily and the sound wasn't affected at all! The sound is beautiful and the ukulele was able to hold it's tuning after the first day. So overall, as long as you're careful with it you'll have a great time!

This ukulele was made in China. It would be a good choice for a beginner at any age.
