Overview

Originally created to recognize Ludwig's 100th Anniversary in 2009, Ludwig Centennial Series Drums have been expanded to include three new shell packs in popular, tour-ready configurations. Fusing the warmth and projection of quality North American Maple shells with a choice of six custom sparkle or natural lacquer finishes, the Centennial Series delivers reliabiity and the legendary Ludwig sound in one exceptional package.

The 100% North American Maple Shells are crowned with Vibraband Suspension Rims to ensure supreme resonance, while wearing triple-flanged chrome hoops and redesigned classic lugs. The bass drum features an undrilled design to maintain the natural timbre of the drum. In addition, the die-cast bass drum claws and telescoping spurs ensure a dependable tune and base, respectively.

The Zep configuration features the fabled 26 x 14 in. kick drum, 14 x 10 in. rack tom and 16 x 16 in. and 18 x 16 in.floor toms. Simply put—this shell pack is heavy machinery for a rock drummer who wants to bring the thunder. With additional component drums available to fit the needs of any playing style, Centennial Series Drums are Ludwig's answer to the working drummer's battle cry.

I also waited over a year to come up with the cash for these drums. I changed from a Gretsch Catalina Maple. I was going to get the mohogany burst finish, but opted for red sparkle in the end (mostly because I got a great deal on a used one). But I'm so glad I did! Before I got them, I thought it was going to look a little gaudy, to be honest, but with the stage lighting, strobes, fog and other things, it fits right in and I've received many compliments on the look and sound from drummers and non-drummers alike. The pictures speak for themselves. I included 1 from a club with stage lights, etc and one from a regular room with basic lighting.
As far as sound, I swapped the heads for Evans G1 on bottom and G2 on top. Aquarian Super kick is used on the batter side of bass drum and another muffle type Ludwig resonant head on bass drum. No pillow or blanket needed.
Let's put it this way...For the first few shows, I had trouble staying focused on the songs I was playing because i was so amazed with the sound and feel of these drums. It feels like every drum hits you right in the chest.
Even the Led Zeppelin recordings don't do justice for this kit. It's a feel and sound I haven't experienced with any other kit.

The drums arrived in boxes. We inspected the drums and noted several problems.
Bearing edge is badly inconsistent. Both in the smoothness where contact is made with the head and on the thickness of the shell .
On the bearing edge it undulates up and down beyond anything I have ever seen. The shell thickness is wavy around all of the drums, some much worse than others. Seems of the finish ply were separating near the edges. These things were noted on the invoice in store. 18 inch floor tom is out of round and required the hoop to have the head sit on the shell. Being primarily a studio musician this is unacceptable as tuning and tine are everything and so far I have not been able to keep this consistent. Therein filler in between the plies and voids at the bearing edge. The finish is generally nice, some ghost marks which appear to be where the plastic packaging was placed onto the not dry lacquer is evident on Bass drum ... you need to be looking for it. Hard ware seems ok, although the chrome on the 14inch tom mount is flaking off already. Disappointed.

Thunderous!

By JAMES TROSCLAIR

Comments about Ludwig Centennial Zep 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I've owned several drum kits in my 15+ years of drumming, and this kit is the most unique I've ever purchased. The toms produce a very thick tone whether you tune high or low. The kick is exactly what I expected from a 26" bass drum. When you lay the beater to the head, it produces a sound that could part a sea. It's Thunderous! The construction of the kit as a whole is great. The rack Tom mount was a little tricky, but solid nevertheless. I also like the way the leg brackets are spring hinged on the floor toms. Overall, great tone, great construction, great everything!

The sound of Thunder

Comments about Ludwig Centennial Zep 4-Piece Shell Pack:

After years of yearning for a Ludwig kit in these sizes I finally got the funds to get it. Initially I wanted the Mahogany Burst, but that wasnt available until July, so I opted for the Red Sparkles, I could not be more pleased. These drums sound fantastic, they're loud, warm, and have so much tone, not to mention the look beautiful. The Kick alone is the most thunderous drum I've heard to date, I've played a 26"" for the past 5 years, but this is a completely different sounding beast. I can't wait to start gigging with these beauties.

Comments about Ludwig Centennial Zep 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I really like these Ludwigs. I had a Classic Maple Zep Set years ago that cost 3K, and these are just as nice for alot less. The finish is amazing and pictures do not capture the brilliance of the bling. I thought I would be changing out the stock heads right away, but was able to tune all the toms to a thick, fat, open tone that cuts nicely. I did change out the bass resonant heads as found them too thick and muffled for my taste. I want to hear that 26" kick. The ride tom mount is a little weak for a 14" tom (bobs up and down a bit when layed into). Placing the tom on a snare stand seemed to kill the resonance, so decided to deal with the stock L-arm tom mount. But hey, drop a LM402 Supraphonic on the snare stand and your off to the races. Makes you want to play all the Zepplin and Sabbath fills for days. I always prefer to buy American, but I still work for a living too so price was a consideration. You can't go wrong here, if you want to bring the thunder.

Comments about Ludwig Centennial Zep 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I don't want this to be a negative rant, so i I will stick to the shortcomings of this kit. Overall the finish on the outer shell is nice except near the edges. The bearing edge is the worse I've ever seen on a production drum kit. Fillers and voids on the bearing edges. Undulating edge with shell thickness that randomly varied. Hard to impossible to tune.
I would really like to speak to the Ludwig Rep to sort this out.

Comments about Ludwig Centennial Zep 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I've been playing for nearly 40 years and have used Ludwig Maple Customs. I felt that it was time for a new kit as touring and years of setting up and breaking down takes its toll no matter how well you treat them. I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this kit due to some reviews and the low price but upon receiving this kit and tuning and playing them I have found that this kit plays just as well as The USA kits and the lacquer finish is preferred over the "wrap."
As far as I'm concerned, if you don't mind not having a Keystone badge on your drums and 6 ply instead of 3 then you are basically getting the same kit.
There will be someone that always disagrees but I am extremely happy with these drums and I saved a few thousands this time around.

Unless you need the Keystone badge
