Comments about Line 6 Variax Standard:
As an owner of the original Variax I can tell you this is a great upgrade. I had a little concern about the Line6 Vetta II amp powering and switching the Variax Standard via the VDI. But to my delight it works perfectly (the same as the original Variax). The magnetic pups sound great and the modeling is far better than on the original (and the original is pretty darn good). All in all I am extremely happy with this guitar.
Comments about Line 6 Variax Standard:
I play in a vocally oriented band so keys are often changed to meet the singer's needs. This results in some odd / annoying keys which can make an easy or guitar oriented song hard to play. Try Born on The Bayou in Eb....
I purchased the Variax mainly to use the dial accessible tunings. If the band is singing in Eb, I just play in E with the Variax set to 1/2 step down. Works really well, and open tuning also sound great.
The guitar made by Yamaha is solid. Like a $500 guitar with $300 of electronics added. Magnetic pickups sound good and neck is a comfortable profile. If I'm in standard tuning, then my American made Strat or PRS guitars are just better. They also cost twice as much!
The guitar modeling ranges from cool (Reso and Acoustic) to underwhelming. I think you need a Tele to sound like a Tele. When using acoustic models, you need to use an A/B switch to direct the output to a PA or acoustic amp.
