The Korg Electribe has undergone an evolutionary process that puts the current Korg Electribe in the same role as its predecessors: a leader in electronic music production. Whether you want to stay competitive or get competitive, the Korg Electribe is a magnificent tool for improving the sonic quality and the dynamic tension of your shows. The other chief improvement in the current Electribe relative to the many versions that have been rolled out since its introduction in 2003 is its ease of use. It is fast for the beginner to get used to and fast for the experienced Electribe user to master the new functions. The electribe perfectly fulfills two tasks that both demand speed: live performance and music production.

The electribe has been reborn including KORG's latest technology distilled from popular products such as the KingKORG, kaossilator, kaoss pad, and taktile. The 200 preset patterns cover House and Techno as well as cutting-edge dance music genres such as Trap and EDM. Another major evolution of the new electribe is support for polyphonic playback, which is indispensable for musical styles that involve complex chord progressions such as House music.

An evolved step sequencer
Using the 16 pads placed on the front of the unit, you can create patterns intuitively while actually hearing and seeing the sounds. You can use the pads as a keyboard to realtime-record phrases, and also perform step recording by entering the pitch and rhythmic value one note at a time. The patterns you create can be used in alternate forms as you perform by taking advantage of the "step jump" feature inherited from the volca series, or by changing the "last step" to vary the length of each part.

A synth engine that allows the fastest sound production
For the electribe, KORG designed a synth engine that gives you the maximum sound-creating freedom and the fastest sound production. The 409 oscillator waveforms include analog modeling and PCM. The analog modeling synth engine provides a broad variety ranging from simple basic waveforms to complex combinations such as dual, unison, sync, ring modulation, and cross modulation. The PCM sound engine provides mainly rhythm sounds, but also covers multisamples for keyboard. (collaborations with Sample Magic, Loopmasters, Prime Loops are included)

Even deeper creative potential: Effects and Groove templates
The new electribe provides effects such as compression and overdrive for each part, giving you uncompromising control over the nuances of individual sounds that differ subtly between genres. The groove function can be specified for each part, letting you apply a groove to your phrase simply by selecting a template. New functions for live performance: Master effects, Pattern sets, Sync in/out.

The master effects can be controlled from the touch pad just like on the kaoss pad, and they include not only spatial-type effects that shape the overall acoustics but they also include effects that apply aggressively musical transformations such as the "Vinyl Break" effect inherited from the Kaoss pad series, and the newly developed "Seq Reverse" and "Odd Stepper" that change the playback order of the sequencer. These are also extremely effective for live performance. Insert effects can be assigned for individual parts, opening up even more complex sound-design possibilities.

A new workflow with Ableton Live
Transform inspiration into a creative production. KORG has collaborated with Ableton to offer a new music production workflow that combines the best of hardware and software. The electribe can internally save and export patterns in Ableton Live format. Individual patterns and parts are saved as scenes and clips in an Ableton Live Set. Use Live's powerful Session and Arrangement workflows to edit and and refine your ideas, perform or record new parts, arrange your ideas, and mix your song. The Korg electribe includes Live Lite.

Streamlined Powerhouse

By Edward

Comments about Korg Electribe Music Production Station:

The new Korg electribe is a sleek and futuristic groovebox. It's housed in a solid metal zinc case - with sturdy encoders, nice backlit pads, an X/Y touch surface, lots of LEDs, and an informative white-backlit LCD screen. You won't be unimpressed. It's a blast to play and program, with a streamlined user interface and just enough sound-creation depth to keep synth-heads busy. The synthesis engine is vastly improved over previous Electribe - tons of oscillators (including gritty chiptune sources), classic filter models (the MS-20 and Acid filters are very distinct), and a long list of modulation paths. There's no shortage of effects - with independent knob-driven inserts and a routable master on the touch pad. The new drum PCMs are booming, snappy, and very well processed - plenty of tweaking options. The dedicated oscillator/PCM edit knob (providing distortions, bit reductions, brightness, etc.) really adds another dimension, increasing your percussion tones vastly. While this is clearly a next-generation electribe, there are a few minor omissions and issues. Insert effects could really use a second parameter, the step sequencer has changed, there are only 4 bars, glide affects every note (not just ties) and the anti-aliasing is a little too steep. (High frequencies are dialed down the higher you go, so self-oscillating filter squeals are too tame, and top end overtones vanish into a lowpass haze - but it is very quiet with no background noise, hum or hiss.) OS firmware upgrades might add features or fix issues in the future, so I can't ding it for any specific shortcoming. All modern digital gear seems to go through several firmware revisions. And the electribe is pretty great right out of the box on OS 1.3. Overall, a impressive package with lots of value and a ton of performance and studio potential. If you've been stuck behind a mouse too long, you'll really dig this modern standalone hardware groovebox. (Creativity not included.)

Comments about Korg Electribe Music Production Station:

Great device save for the dodgy pads. They are not awful, but have a very inconsistent feel. About half of them require much more pressure in order to be at the same velocity as the others. Aside from that this little box is a monster waiting to happen!

Comments about Korg Electribe Music Production Station:

I've been a huge fan of Korg stuff since I bought their "Pandora's Box" digital 4 Track about 100 Years ago. I'm pretty new to synthesis and electronic beats (In the past, I've always had bandmates who were better versed in this sort of thing). I tip-toed in using the Volca series, starting with the Volca Beats, which I highly recommend for anybody just beginning to explore this type of thing. I love the price-point, ease of use, and the fact that the Korg units easily sync up together. The Electribe was the logical next step for me. Admittedly, I've only just received the item and not gotten a chance to really put the unit through its paces yet, but so far I'm really psyched about what I'm seeing. Super high-quality construction, satisfying heft and intuitive design. Sound bank and onboard effects are awesome. My thing is sort of an electro-folk songwriter, I guess you could say. There are tons of Acid/House tones I'll probably never use, but who knows? I'm also a big fan of outboard units like this (as opposed to DAW), as I think it brings you closer to the music when you aren't endlessly clicking on a mouse and dragging down menus, etc. Watch the countless videos on YouTube, which are a pretty good demo of the vastly different genres of electronic music available at your fingertips: R&B, House, Trance, Ambient. It's up to you to make your thing happen. And this seems like a pretty awesome tool with which to do it.

      Disappointed again

Comments about Korg Electribe Music Production Station:

Guitar center strikes out again. It looks like a floor unit. Case is beat up, scratched, and had handprints all over. A couple of the pads don't trigger well, there were dead batteries in the unit, and the power chord wasnt included. Every major purchace I've made from guitar center for 15 years has had a similar outcome. Never again.
