Korg MS-20 mini - Interview with Mr. Fumio Mieda and Mr. Hiroaki Nishijima

Description
The MS-20 distinguished itself at its debut through its gripping lead tones, its fat and juicy basses, and its its warm strings and pads. It was a two oscillator synth with two VCAs, sample and hold, a noise generator and many other tweakable components. The entire array has been designed by the fussiest design team imaginable—the same people who made the MS-20 in the first place. If you are a fan of analog synthesis in general, and of the MS-20 in particular, this is a synth you need to check out.

Beyond impressed by Korg with the MS20 Mini. The oscillators are powerful, both high pass and low pass filters are wild, and the build quality is stellar. The knobs are solid, have a great touch sensitivity and range. The patchbay can be confusing at first, but experiment with the included patchbook and you will figure it out. As a guitarist, I love the amount of overdrive I can get with this synth, especially if you patch the signal output into the external signal processor VCA, back into the external signal in you can push this thing into full fuzz and make it absolutely howl. Its also tons of fun to hook up your guitar to and be able to play the oscillators and blend your dry signal...and have the ability to overdrive your guitar signal right on the front panel without any pedals in site. I have big hands and the keys have a great touch and feel. Those that complain about this keyboard are just looking for something to complain about. This synth is awesome and has its own voice and playing feel.
A little powerhouse

The reviews already posted do a good job of describing this synth. And that is the key word; synth. If you're looking for a rompler, this is NOT for you. If you make the time and effort to learn to use it, the possibilities are endless. The word 'classic' gets thrown around a lot. First introduced in 1978, it had a five year run. Korg brought it back in the 'Mini' version in 2013. The design is decades old and, in the right hands, delivers Ben Watkins, the mastermind behind Juno Reactor, says the filters of the MS-20 are the best of any synth he has used. High praise indeed.

Truly wonderful for anyone looking to dive into analog synthesizers. There's always an opportunity for a new, untouched sound to be tapped into with the MS-20.

MS-20 mini is not for everyone. If you are a "load samples on my Launchpad and fly with Ableton" musician then this will be more trouble than its worth. But if you want to generate your own unique samples and are willing to invest the time to get results, then this is worthy of consideration. For me, the patch cords and external instrument capabilities are key. And coupled to a DAW you can layer clips and phrases that will put a huge smile on your face. Who knew the 70's were so much fun!
AWESOME! KORG RE-ISSUE VINTAGE TECH = SPOOKY & WEIRD FLAVOR

This is my first real venture into the arena of analog synthesis. I'm extremely excited about this. I was looking into the Moog Sub Phatty, but the MS-20 Mini had more options for the modeling of the sound built-in, without the need of external components right off the bat. I'm a sucker for vintage tech, but vintage units always have a feature that doesn't work quite right, or some piece of hardware that's busted. This slightly-smaller re-issue keeps it legit, in precisely the way that you would hope. Other analog synths (such as the ARP Odyssey re-issue) are also appealing to me, but at this price, this needed to happen immediately.

If your looking for the big, dirty analog sound, look no further. This unit is very capable of synthesizing anything from percussion to pads to deep sub bass. My only complaint would be better control of a faint hiss during sound design. It also looks very impressive, the knobs and keys feel solid and smooth, and the patch bay is sweet!
