Overview

The LSR308, part of JBL's 3 Series studio monitors, is a 8 in. powered studio monitor delivering professional performance at an affordable price points. 3 Series Powered Studio Monitors are first to incorporate JBL's exciting new technology, the Image Control Waveguide. In conjunction with 3 Series high-performance transducers and system components, the Image Control Waveguide lets you hear detail and depth in recordings as you've never heard before.

The LSR308's 8 in. long-throw woofer and its 1 in. damped woven composite Neodymium tweeter are designed from the ground up to reproduce the powerful transients and micro dynamics of your mix. These drivers deliver impressive deep bass and smooth high frequency response beyond the range of human hearing. JBL's Patented Slip Stream low frequency port design works in concert with the woofer to produce deep bass response at all playback levels. The double-flared shape of the port is precisely engineered for greater low-frequency extension and reduced turbulence.

Big Power, Big Sound
3 Series efficient Class D Amplifiers provide abundant power to deliver the output and dynamic headroom needed for the most demanding production styles

Professional Balanced Inputs
Balanced XLR and 1/4 in. (6 mm) TRS inputs give you the options you need to connect your 3 Series to any signal source while maintaining professional signal quality.

Selectable Input Sensitivity
The -10 dB/+4 dB sensitivity switch ensures compatibility with a broad range of signal sources, allowing you to connect the 3 Series to high output professional gear without any danger of input overload.

LF Trim and HF Trim "TRIM" switches for both the Low and High Frequencies give you excellent control over the 3 Series sound in "your" room. Use these to fine-tune the amount of bass and treble you hear to compensate for room acoustics, program material and your personal taste.

JBL Professional Reliability
Prior to becoming a production-ready design, each 3 Series model is subjected to JBL's tough 100-hour power test, in which the speaker is required to play continually at full output for 100 hours without failure. This demanding test ensures your 3 Series speakers will deliver years of reliable performance.

JBL LSR Design - Your Music Needs a Point of Reference
While most manufacturers take only a single on axis measurement of the speaker's performance, this doesn't tell how it will sound in your room. JBL's LSR Linear Spatial Reference design criteria requires seventy-two measurements yielding more than 1,200 times more data, enabling JBL to engineer a speaker that "sounds right" in any working space. With LSR design, 3 Series Studio Monitors deliver superior accuracy regardless of the size and shape of your room, so your mixes "hit their mark" when heard on any playback system.

I just got a pair of these after looking and reading about them for a few months. For the most part, I found nothing but great reviews and after all, they're JBLs, right? However, you never know when reading reviews online. Well, I finally pulled the trigger and I am so glad I did. I'm hearing new things in my mixes. Things like reverbs, delays, exciters, etc. even sound better. The stereo image is greatly improved. There is a depth to my mixes that I wasn't hearing before. I would highly recommend these monitors to anyone recording and mixing music. Great punch in the bottom end; crisp and clear highs. Definitely worth a listen. I compared these to the Mackie MR8mk3, Behringer Truth B3031A, KRK Rokit 8" Gen3, and Presonus Eris 8. With one exception, these all sounded great, but the JBL LSR308 stood out to me and sounded perfect for my ears. Speakers are a very subjective thing, so you have to choose what sounds best to you. For me, the JBLs are a clear winner. Features: Pretty straight forward here. Balanced inputs, both XLR and TRS, volume control. The LF and HF trim switches are nice though. They really help you configure the speakers based on your room and their placement. The input sensitivity is also very nice to have. Too often there is a mismatch here and you don't have any way to change it and it impact your experience with the product. Quality and Reliability: I haven't really owned them long enough to make a fair judgement on reliability. However, I have had great experiences with other Harman companies' products as well as with JBL in particular in the past. They seem well built, no rattles. Connectors/switch are sturdy. Look and Feel: I'm used to grill cloths on speakers, but I can get used to these. After all, I didn't buy them for their looks. I also thought they would be heavier, actually. I believe they are about 30 lbs each. Not bad.

I loved these at first, they sound great and are very affordable. Unfortunately after a little more than 1 year of gentle use (I never crank them) one of them stopped powering up. Nearest service center took 3 weeks to send it back to JBL, who have had it for another 3 weeks. Still waiting...
From what I've read online, this is a reoccurring problem with these. I now live in fear that my other one could die at any moment. I also have serious doubts about there longevity. My last set of monitors powered up just fine for 20 years.(Event 2020)
Steer clear of these despite the great sound/price ratio.
Very disappointed with JBL. I am going to sell these and get some Yammys. Good day.

Best monitors at this price point

By David

from New Hampshire

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

I worked on the earlier JBL monitors for some mastering projects and was content with them but not incredibly impressed. I thought they were pretty neck and neck with the yamaha's and the KRK's and even the Mackie HR's. After I got a pair of the 8' 3 series I was very impressed with them. They aren't genelecs or a high end adam's pair of monitors but when it comes to this price range there is nothing that even comes close to these. I mix and master all types of music on these from funk to metal and classical to jazz. Their high end is exceptionally clear and they still have a great bass response at 80hz with out being over bearing like some of the KRK's bass response. I don't find that I need a sub woofer with these although I just don't care to mix with one anyway. Great buy and you will not be disappointed, but definitely get the 8's to hear the full extent of the range because the 5's can put out the bass because of the smaller woofer. Cheers

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

Decided to treat myself to a pair of these. They worked well for six months of limited use and then one of them stopped powering up. Called for service and was told to bring it to the nearest service center for warranty. The closest service center is an hours drive. That's right an hour. I looked up the service center on Yelp and the ratings were horrible. People writing about how they didn't return calls for MONTHS, refused to repair items, returned items claiming to be fixed that weren't, took money from people. Folks, do yourself a favor and spring for the KRK's. They are built to last. JBL is junk, nowadays.

Game Changer!

By Jason Aguja

from Los Angeles, California

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

I picked these over Yamaha's HS80 (now reworked and named HS8) for a less boomy low end, extended but not hyped and better mids response. You really don't need to add a subwoofer with these; they're (to my ears) as full range as it gets with an 8" woofer and 1" tweeter. Lower and Upper midrange is definitely more present than the HS80/HS8 and JBL's new waveguide on the tweeter makes even off-axis listening more accurate than others. I've worked on Focal Twin6's (higher end monitors) and the clarity and flatness of response is comparable. I also have these JBL's next to my Yamaha NS10's and side-by-side they still provide midrange clarity and fast transient response I'm used to on the NS10's (not bad for the Class D Amps in JBL's). They can get loud and not choke and to my ears and I'm sure there is a limiter in the circuit to protect you. I'm extremely happy with these, they're flat, not fatiguing on the ears while mixing, have extended low end and no port noise and they are affordable. They translate the dynamics of classical and jazz music as well as deliver heavily compressed/brickwall limited EDM and Hip-Hop with ease. They've beat most if not all monitors in this class/price range. I recommend them to all serious producers/engineers and musicians looking for affordability and true quality.

The Real Deal

By CURTIS FALLIS

from Fort Worth, TX

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

I rarely take the time to write up a review on gear but I just had to throw in my opinion here. I read probably EVERY review I could hunt down online about these monitors well before I purchased them and the hype was so great it made me rethink getting the KRK's which I pretty much had my mind made up on. I had already heard the KRK's and considered them to be pretty solid for this mid-price range group of monitors. So I went down to GC and sat for about 3 hours flipping the little switches listening to every monitor they had giving a very solid listen and I know this is such a subjective thing but to me the JBL's just blew everything away. The hype is legit. I have them running out of a KRK 10s sub so they are crossed over and therefore I'm not relying on them for my low end, but they do pump some serious low end frequencies. The high/mid stereo spread is perfect. I have them propped up on the ISO Acoustics L8R200 stands and I also have my sub on the ISO Acoustics sub stand as well. Man what a difference those stands make! So if you're in that $500 price range do yourself a favor and consider the JBL's. I couldn't be happier.

Awesome!

By Tom Amereihn

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

These monitors are, as stated, Awesome! For being my first set of studio quality, affordable monitors, you can not beat them. I spent over an hour in the sound room at my local GC comparing these monitors to the PreSonus Eris E8's playing all different types of music through them. The JBL LSR308's are bright, clear, punchy, have a very smooth low end (even with the sub frequencies) and are much more defined and sexy than the Eris E8's. To me, the E8's are very woofy in the low mids, extremely mid-rangy and just do not have the definition, quality, response and looks that the LSR308's have. Now don't get me wrong, I own a PreSonus StudioLive 32.4.2AI Mixing Console and it's a dream to work with! But their monitors just do not cut it for me.

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

I wasn't too sure of what speakers I was looking for when I decided to rebuild the home studio. I had heard a lot about the Yamaha HS series and was almost dead-set on getting a pair of HS5s, being cautious of price. I knew if I went with a 5" LF cone I'd absolutely need a woofer to catch any low-end. I wanted the quality but couldn't really do it on the budget. I went in to the Lansing shop and one of the guys actually let me demo a pair of these and he didn't have to tell me anything. They sound JUST as good if not better than the HSs. They're not over-priced or extra bass-heavy like most others on respective ends of the spectrum. These are quite honestly the best value monitors I can think of. I definitely overlooked the brand initially, although I used to have an old pair of JBL loudspeakers that sounded way too clean for how much use they got. This is a solid brand you can count on. And these speakers hit just about every frequency you'll want to hear. I say 'just about' because they are still 8" and while you don't NEED a woofer, the sub bass is still somewhat gentle compared to hearing it through most newer car systems. As far as a reference point, these are going to give you more than what you pay for. Very accurate, not exaggerated, responsive bass through to the hats and snares. It really is a genuinely great time hearing sound through them no matter what it is; you'll probably hear different things you've never heard before on other speakers. I know I still do. Okay I've rambled enough, BUY THESE BAD BOYS!!

However, they sound so perfect, especially when ran through a Focusrite Scarlett. I can distinctly hear the left and right seperations the bass is punchy enough for me. If I had the space, I would definitely add a JBL LSR310S to make these bad boys really shine.

Comments about JBL LSR308 8" Powered Studio Monitor:

In our home studio, also for TV use, these sound fantastic. The only drawback I realized after purchase,(obvious, but I didn't consider...) is there is no speaker protection whatsoever, so they need a safe location where they wont get bumped. Perfect set of small monitors. Very detailed sound.
