Greetings, 12AX7 users and potential users. I recently purchase two AMPEG SVP PRO Preamps from Guitar Center and really love 'em! Thanks, GC! So, I decided to begin the process of "Tube-Rolling: Buying and installing different brands of tubes in search of the best, however subject, sound for my SVP's. I found a great deal on some JJ Electronics 12AX7's and 12 AU7's on another site and GC priced-matched to the penny. So, I ordered them, received them and installed them with permission form Pro Coverage and found that the New-Production JJ Electronics 12AX7's are EXCELLENT! However, they have a "GAIN RATING OF 100" and I believe these run at 150(I know, that's off the scale, but, these tubes KICK!) and that's is just too strong for my 2,000 watt system. So, I tube rolled the tubes that were already in one of the SVP's along with the new one's from GC and hit a combination that works for me, for now... The reason I'm emphasizing the Gain-Factor so much is that if you used these JJ Electronic 12AX7 tubes in the input stage of an SVP, you can easily cause the tube to distort way beyond the usually desirable range between a natural bass sound with just the right amount of "HI-FI" sound along with some "glassiness" into just another dirty sounding input-signal processed by your signal-chain and delivered to your audience as such. If that's your gig, then have at it. What I did was to use the one JJ 12AX7 in the input stage position and one JJ 12AU7 in it's slot with the balance of the 5 being the Sovteks that were already in the one of the two SVP's and that gave me better control of my input(can't tell 'ya why, I just started doing this) and really excellent control of my parametric(?) EQ that I often augment with the SVP's built-in electronic-EQ. The end result: Clean, clear and beefy input-signal matched by the rest of the signal-chain but a bit lacking in the balance between the Mid's and High's. HOWEVER! Please, don't let my opinion stop you from ordering these New-Production JJ Electronic 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes because everything from your thoughts about sound to your bass and string choices and your output amp and speakers will all impact your sound! As I discovered from Rick Marshall on a YouTube video called "Tube Amp Survival Guide #1" and confirmed by other sources, "Output tubes are slaves to whatever is handed to 'em," and in "Tube Amp Survival Guide #2," he says, "Well, we've been usin' JJ tubes because they've proven themselves more reliable than...JJ's have performed the BEST!" - So far, I agree! Happy Rollin'! (the tubes, not the funny stuff! - LoL!)!

Typical JJ 12ax7 tube

In Bugera V-22 tames the gain somewhat. Less treble and less harmonic content but I already knew that from past use of these tubes.

Awesome Tubes

By Adam Dodds

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

Replaced the Mesa 12AX7 tube with the JJ 12AX7 and have been very happy that I did! The internal construction of the JJ tube is superior to the Mesa and the amp also has higher gain now. Overall very satisfied, you can't go wrong with JJ Tubes.

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

Needed increased bottom end and a less shrill top end to my Marshall DSL 401. These tubes provided just that and a more complex tonal structure. Very pleased.

      Good tubes.

      By Gabe Ausiello

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

I haven't used anything other than JJ's, so I don't have much to compare to, but I did have to replace my old JJ's with new ones, and it made a nice difference. Saturation is good. They are vey quiet. Plenty of gain. Compared to my old tubes, the new ones accept the push from an overdrive pedal much better. I don't have that great of an amp in the first place (Peavey Windsor Head), but I did get back a tiny bit of EQ that I was missing when I put the new tubes in. I would recommend these for sure.

Replacement for Pre-amp tube in Marshall AVT 150 H

      By Matthew

      from Rock Hill, South Carolina

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

I used this to replace an old used tube in my Marshall AVT 150 H head. It actually added more gain to my sound, more smoothness and a more rounded high end. It was what I was looking for. Keep in mind however, this is only my situation, I have no idea how this tube will react with other amplifiers only my Marshall. Sounds better than it did before. -Matt

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

JJ ECC83 tubes should be the core of your preamp. They have openness and clarity, but clip and break up at just the right point, giving you gain saturation and tonal clarity. Only three factories in the world make all the guitar amp tubes you can buy, whatever the brand stamped on it...China, Russia, and Czech Republic/Slovakia where JJ's are made. The Slovak tubes are the only ones being currently made that are endorsed by my Marshall tech, who's been servicing tube amps for 50 years. They're tough, musical, and reliable!!

Comments about JJ Electronics 12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube:

The tubes work great. But the tone isn't what I hoped for. Great bass response. Mids are kind of thin. Treble is too crispy or sparkly or something, to my ears. Like crunchy glass. So back to tube hunting I go.

I replaced the mesa tubes in my Tremoverb Dual Rectifier combo. The old ones had become microphonic and developed a high pitched squeal that wouldn't go away. These tubes are much quieter but also added more definition and punch to the low end. I'm very pleased. I play heavy alternative bordering on metal.

Swapped out the factory Bugera tubes in my 333XL for these, the difference was noticeable immediately. The overall output felt like it had been boosted. (i.e. 4 on the volume knob was as loud as 5 used to be.) but the biggest difference was the overall clarity. I had already swapped the power tubes for 4 JJ 6L6's, but the overall sound was still muddy, especially in the low end (play mostly drop tunings). Once I installed the preamp tubes, the mud was gone and the sound fidelity had increased dramatically. The other guitar player in my band uses a 6505+, and with the full JJ tube swap, I'd say my amp sounds almost identical in quality to his.

I had a loud hum on my amp, so I read online that I should change the v3 tube. I purchased the preamp tube and now the hum is gone. Note: Now it could have been my guitar cable or even my cable input on my guitar which caused the hum, nonetheless I also bought a new guitar cable for my axe and now eveything is great. Thank you Guitar Center!
