Overview

For many decades, Ibanez has been re-energizing the hollowbody world with a wide variety of original designs, unrivaled playability and polished tones. By closely working with many legendary artists Ibanez is constantly striving to experiment, innovate and deliver. This enthusiasm for exploration has led to the Contemporary Archtop series, customized specifically to meet the demands of today’s cutting edge players.

The AFC95 features a larger headstock design, 3-piece mahogany/ maple set-in neck and a bound ebony fretboard for smooth articulation. It's built with a selected spruce top, flamed maple back and sides to provide its stylish appearance and balanced tone, and with the addition of plywood top, helps to avoid unnecessary feedback. The rock solid ebony compensated bridge give the output a clear intonation, longer sustain and acoustic resonance.

The AFC95 comes with the Ibanez custom made “Magic Touch-Mini” humbucker pickups, providing a balance of classic tones, alongside clear articulation on both the top and bottom of the sound spectrum. Players can enjoy the clean response on the top end, presenting fast melodies or complex chord progressions with clarity and precision. The bottom end also has a deep warm and rich classic sound, but with a clarity specially adjusted to help avoid muddy low end tones. This tonal balance is complimented by the pickups’ extra sensitivity that clearly captures and accentuates the players pick attack and plucking style opening the possibilities of a wide range of playing techniques.

Thanks to floating mount, the “Magic Touch-Mini” pickups do not dampen the guitars natural body vibration, thus allowing a bigger richer acoustic tone. These are all complimented by the newly designed pickguard, tailpiece cover and wooden control knobs. Case sold separately.

Comments about Ibanez AFC95 Contemporary Archtop Series Electric Guitar:

I've wanted a big box guitar for years, but never had a practical reason until a couple of friends and I were hired for some holiday parties this year (I'm the rhythm section). Doing Christmas classics, 40s standards and the like. It was a struggle to grab the more complex chords on the acoustic and the tele and jazzmaster don't have anything close to the right sound for the style.

I tried a number of guitars in the store ranging in price from $300 to $700+. I plugged this guy into a Roland jazz chorus amp, turned off the chorus, selected the neck pick up and it was pretty magical. It has the warm, full classic sound needed for this style of music. Strings are consistent in tone and volume across the entire neck. At the first performance, I plugged it directly into a Behringer X32, eq'd the channel, slapped some 'verb on and viola.

Came with flat wounds, which I've never much cared for, but they sound great on finger picked jazz, so I'll probably stick with them on this guitar. Action was quite good off the rack, won't have to do any set up, which is nice. Visual aesthetics are excellent; it's classy looking and people have noticed and remarked on it. I LOVE playing it - very fun. The singers I'm working with noted the suitability of the instrument and loved the sound.

Only minor (very subjective) negatives are the sound of the bridge pickup and playing it acoustically. The bridge pickup isn't bad by any means; I just don't find it appealing for the style I purchased it for. If I find myself using it for country or rockabilly it will probably be useful. Acoustically it sounds extremely weak - only useful for personal practice, so don't plan on performing or rehearsing without amplification.

Doesn't come with a case, but it fit a dreadnaught case I already had just fine.
