Much better than my previous two

By Phlipper

from NC

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Glad they added a treble bleed cap
  • Love the blacktop pups
  • Pups clean up well
  • Sounds amazing, very resonant

Cons

  • Perfect intonation will still require some work
  • Will still need a new nut cut to run .012s

Best Uses

  • Channeling Brian Setzer and old Billy Gibbons
  • Jazz box

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I've owned a first gen 5120 which was nice but required a LOT of work to get the action set up and intonated. It also required new pups and wiring to be useable. Then I owned one of the first 5120s with Blacktops and it sounded a lot better, but still required a bit of work to set up and intonate. A new nut was just the cost of playing Electromatics, I figured.

But the new 2017 models with treble bleed cap seem to be a different animal. I couldn't put .012s on it but I am running .011s without a new nut and it intonates well enough. Playing it into a cranked amp this one resonates sweetly. The whole body seems to vibrate musically and the feedback is easy to control.

So far ... me likey VERY much.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for 41 years and rarely does a guitar come along that fits like this one does! The tone is like butter and is so rich and full that I sometimes get carried away to that blissful place that only musicians know! The neck is just right for me and with only a minimal amount of adjustment, it has become my favorite of my other 4 guitars that I own. It stays in tune very well when using the Bigsby tremolo, which is a huge plus for me. I played several other hollow body guitars in the store, but kept coming back to this one and have been completely satisfied with the performance of this instrument!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

This guitar can do anything! the pickups are nice and bright....in the neck position it sounds full bodied with lots of sparkle. roll the tone down a tiny and you have a great jazz box. the middle position is just butter! i like playing old Mills brothers and Hank Williams tunes with this....Wait for it.......The bridge position is SO fun!! Not quite tele sound but you can get some serious chickin pickin done and it sounds great. Now lets throw on the Overdrive....The guitar itself is full bodied and bright. great for some AC/DC or blues type sounds, I've run it through a processor and get some awesome heavy heavy tones. I own a couple of Les Pauls, many Srats and Tele's( which are irreplaceable) This guitar means business and is probably my new fave. That Great Gretsch Sound!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

Been wanting a Gretsch in the 'stable'. This guitar surprises with the build and tone. outstanding guitar on its own right. Glad I sprung for it. Even works well with higher gain tones, lovely feedback and sustain, like riding a angry bull. The upgrades bring this model up a few notches. Its a keeper. DRKT

        The Greatest Guitar

        By Captain

        from Haverhill, MA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

The Electronatic is well undervalued. Also the 5-layer laminate body has the better physical balance of the other models. I simply have not played a more beautiful, inviting guitar.

It is a total beast, but never be afraid of its power. You won't want to put it down.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

My guitar heroes when I was a kid in the early 60's were Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. I've wanted a Gretsch hollow body ever since I first saw one on TV. This guitar was properly set up and intonated. I am impressed with how resonant the guitar is. It sustains notes very well. It stays in tune though I've heard negatives about Bigsby tremoloes. The action is nice and low with no fret buzz up and down the neck. Overall I am very happy with the overall fit and finish of the instrument. Best Christmas gift ever!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I received the guitar quickly. Looks and sounds great. It had some buzzing of the 5th and 6th strings. Unable to find out where the buzz was coming from I took the guitar to Guitar Center in Oxnard, Ca. They were great. The Guitar Tech. (unknown name) waited on me right a way.
fixed the problem in just a few minutes. Love the guitar and dealing with Guitar Center.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I had a Gretsch g6119 back from 1964 - 1982 and wore out the frets. The guitars that followed could not compete with play-ability. I bought a used G5120 walnut finish just because it looked like the Tennessean. I did not care for the pick-ups and after trying other pick-up the G5420 came out. I tried a G5420 at the guitarcenter and liked the pickups. So... I purchased 5400 blacktops and installed them (the holes do not match up but 2 of the 4 screws held it down nicely). I liked it so much I saved up to but a snow white G5420t and I am very happy.
I mainly play 50's, 60's and 70's rock, but I do play country, blues, standards and flamenco on this guitar and have other guitars for the the harder stuff mainly because I use heavier string gauge on my Gretschs.
My advise is go to GuitarCenter and try it for yourself I think you will be amazed.
Oh, I know the G5420 is cheaper than that G6119 but I find that there is less maintenance with tuning and setup with the G5420. It really does have a quality, that I feel, is close enough to the G6119 that I don't feel its lose anymore. Both G5120 and G5420 will never be let go now that I learned my lesson.

I traded my beloved Swingster guitar for this g5420t. They look like sisters both white & gold. They're my White Falcon wannabes. Plays looks sounds great. I'm mainly rythym mostly front & combo pu.
I'm a pretty good rythym player & very good bass. My greater talent is my ears. This guitar sounds sweet & smooth. Plays easy. Good deal with GC.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I went to GC in Whitehall, PA to sell some guitars...and saw this beautiful Gretsch displayed...HAD to play it, and in the end took it home with me. GREAT neck for me, beautiful resonance, very well made - you can feel this is a solid guitar. The pickups are very Gretschy, but this can be a blues of jazz guitar with some control adjustments...I once owned a 1963 Chet Atkins that was nowhere near as good a guitar as this one is...I will be selling my other arch tops soon because this is replacing them...I just woke up at 2AM after dreaming of playing this Gretsch and just had to do it...IF you go try one, be aware you will want it. A pleasure to play.

This guitar arrived to my door in perfect condition. I was surprised with the setup that it had on it. I only had to make a slight truss rod adjustment and lower the bridge ever so slightly to suit my playing style. It was 25 degrees outside when it was delivered so I'm sure it was spot on before it got to my home. I am really pleased with the 2016 upgrades. I'm an old fart with a fairly large guitar collection of American made gear. I have a few center block guitars but never had a true hollow body and my only concern was the made in Korea stamped on it. Let me tell you, I was so impressed with this thing that I went ahead and ordered a Chapman guitar that I knew was made in the same factory, which is also a fantastic instrument. So I now have two Korean made guitars. If you have been playing for a while and are looking for a true hollow body that produces unique sounds and plays like a dream, pull the trigger, you won't be sorry.

This being my first hollow body of the 3 guitars I own, I am loving it. Had my concerns about having it shipped to me, but those were dashed pretty quickly once I saw how cushioned it was inside that box. Great guitar from a brand I'm not all that familiar with, but glad I now know about.

Awesome guitar, i bought this guitar because i liked the cults guitarists white falcon guitar which i cant afford a real white falcon which costs $5000 had been debating getting a new guitar for quite a while, after watching brian setzers orchestra i decided to buy this guitar i went up to guitar center and bought it, it plays and sounds great, its very lightweight and solid its not flimsy, i still want to be careful and not bang it around, its a beautiful guitar sexy looking and playing it makes you feel like a rockstar and i dont know maybe its in my head but makes you feel like your a better player, i love ibanez guitars and have quite a few but after seeing this baby and playing it i was hooked, this is an awesome guitar, if you like it i highly recommend buying one

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

In 1973 I sold my Gretsch Jet for $150 (probably worth thousands of dollars today) to purchase my wife's engagement ring while on my Army tour during Viet Nam. For over 40 years I have yearned to re find my passion. My wife told me to go find the right guitar to please me. Thanks to the help and expertise from Justin at the Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia store I was able to buy my Gretsch G5420 semi hollow body. For the money, this is a dream machine. The ease with neck and frets allow my arthritic hands to navigate effortlessly, to tone is amazingly rich and bold. I seldom have to re tune, as it holds for weeks. This is an amazing value overall and thanks to Justin, I can't wait to get home daily to "fire it up". Most in importantly, I thank my wonderful wife (Jo) for this amazing gift that I would recommend to the most experienced of players. Guitar Center won a friend for life.

The guitar does indeed have that great Gretsch sound. Right out of the box it was easy to play with no fret buzz. I think that Gretsch has always made pretty guitars, and this particular model is stunning. People's jaws drop when I show it to them. Makes even difficult fingering/chording easier and fun to play.

I have a number of good guitars , just saying . This 5420 Gretsch just took the # 1 spot . My # 1 was a f-65 Martin hollow body , great sounding and playing guitar . My new gretsch just sounds better , it just has a sweet sound that my Martin can't achieve and it even plays a little better . And it's out of the box , didn't do anything to it . Well I liked it so much I bought another one , Sparked Red , same result this is a great guitar . Don't worry that it's made in South Korea , they make a very detailed axe . Enjoy I am L White
