Comments about Gibson Les Paul Studio 2018 Electric Guitar:

Been experimenting with more rock n roll tones and thought I should add a Les Paul to my small collection. Love the smokehouse finish on this studio model. And it does have really amazing tones with overdrive or distortion engaged on my amps. Love the sustain. One thing almost made me return it, though, and I didn't expect this with humbucker pickups. Noise. Much noisier than the N3 pickups on my Strat. I mean 3 or 4 times as much noise. Bought a Boss NS-2 noise suppressor pedal and this helped a lot, but in my music room I can't push too much gain. Spent hours adjusting my amps, the NS-2, turning lights on and off, trying different electrical plugs and guitar cables. Finally, have satisfactory, if a bit limited, tone options now. I'm glad about this, as I like the guitar and it's very fun to play when the hum, buzz and crackle are not too bad. My guitar friends are very impressed with it and the find the finish stylish intriguing, never having seen the like of it before.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Studio 2018 Electric Guitar:

This year I decided to treat myself to a Gibson Les Paul. I first thought I was going to go with a Tribute model, but they seemed plain and didn't have the coil tapping function. I couldn't justify selling a kidney for a brand new Standard - which remains my dream guitar. I did my homework and watched all the Youtube reviews, trekked to a few nearby stores and played a 2017 and a few used examples. I settled on ordering a 2018 Vintage Sunburst and a few days later it was in my hands.

This is where I became disillusioned. At first glance, the guitar was perfect - gloss finish, no sharp frets, no glaring defects, it even smelled of vanilla. I was smitten! But then I plugged it in and played ... The frets were unpolished and every time I tried to bend a string, it was like I was rubbing up against sandpaper. The strings buzzed on any fret near and after the 12th. The intonation was terrible! B and G strings.. they never stayed in tune. It didn't matter that I lubricated the nut with graphite, it didn't matter that I lightly filed them. No matter what I did, they just wouldn't stay in tune, especially after bending notes. I polished the frets, adjusted the action and intonation and tried to live with my flawed guitar. The low e-string wouldn't intonate correctly. I played a little, then re-tuned, rinse and repeat. I ignored the low E, for as long as I could, but just... well frustration got the best of me. I've bought guitars at half the price that didn't need as much work. Completely demoralized, I traded it in (and spent a little more) on a Fender and didn't have to do a thing to it. Maybe I just got a bad example, so I'm going to be generous and give it 3 stars. I've been told that you have to search hi and low for a good Les Paul. If you want one, play it first and make sure the quality control is great from the factory, otherwise, I'd go spend similar money on a guitar with less issues
