Dave Mustaine Flying V™ EXP

Gibson

collapse expand iconDescription

The Gibson Dave Mustaine Flying V EXP electric guitar was designed in close collaboration with Megadeth's legendary frontman and delivers the powerful, heavy sound his fans have come to expect. Its classic "Flying V" body shape exudes an unmistakably aggressive attitude. A solid mahogany body provides rich, resonant tone, while a fast-playing mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard enable flawless playability. Seymour Duncan Thrash Factor and '59 Model SH-1 humbucking pickups recreate Mustaine's iconic tone from Megadeth's Rust in Peace album. Precision Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners and a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge keep everything locked in tune through the most punishing riffs. The Flying V EXP is a high-performance tone machine for serious rock guitarists.

Pummel Audiences With Thrash Factor Pickups

The Flying V EXP comes armed with a pair of Seymour Duncan Thrash Factor humbucking pickups designed in collaboration with Mustaine himself. These high-output pickups deliver the tight, aggressive tone and massive distortion essential to Megadeth's pioneering thrash metal sound. Roll back the volume and tone controls for a warmer, vintage-inspired tone or crank them up all the way to unleash a sonic assault.

Play Fast and Fearless on a Slim, Low-Profile Neck

The Flying V EXP features a slim mahogany neck and compound radius ebony fingerboard—a profile optimized for high-speed lead playing. 24 medium-jumbo frets provide ample room for wide bends and legato runs. A fast, low-friction finish allows fingers to fly effortlessly up and down the neck.

Built to Withstand the Rigors of the Road

From its solid mahogany body to the Nashville Tune-O-Matic Bridge with Stopbar Tailpiece, the Flying V EXP is built to handle the demands of touring and frequent live performances. It comes protected in a hardshell case, ready to transport to your next show. Precision-made Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners provide rock-solid tuning stability and durability for years of hard use.

A Signature Model Fit for a Metal Legend

With its striking Flying V profile, tone-shaping controls, and high-performance electronics, the Dave Mustaine Flying V EXP embodies the power, attitude, and musical mastery of its legendary namesake. It delivers the sound and playability to inspire your own thrashing solos and face-melting riffs.

Not a bad guitar, great tone and feel but just like any other gibson, it goes out of tune so fast if I play heavy or just do pitch harmonics, I feel like its a tad off each time I play a different song. Other than that, I love everything about and will just deal with the tuning.

This guitar sounds better than I imagined. Its super aggressive and bright due to its pickups and hard tail. I had to make minor adjustment to truss rod to lower the action just a bit. The finish is real nice with only 2 minor defects. There is a small dent in one of the edges and around the neck and body the finish is not perfect. I would rate this as 4.5 if I could. For the price its awesome, sure its not cheap but compared to others its in the middle and still USA made. Its balanced, not too heavy and plays great. I have a Jackson USA King V with Floyd and no it does not play as nice as that however it cost $2,000 less. It might sound better and I prefer hard tails.

I had ordered the silver model when it first was announced. I received it on March 13, 2022. I was super excited when I opened the case only to see that if had a few finish cracks, two long ones on either side of the neck. It had numerous nicks in the wood that were painted over. It needed a setup up, because the action was too low and the pickups were too high causing some tones issues. The body felt super light, as if was weight relieved which was kind of disappointing since it is a nice big V. There was overspray on the headstock. I had to return it even though it was a dream guitar. One thing I can say was nice was the silver finish looked great, and you could see the grain through it. Also the ebony fretboard was cool. All in all I wouldn't order another one because who knows what I would get. It seemed like Gibson rushed this one or just didn't care.

I notice the description does not list Daves PUs. Are the pick ups in this guitar just SD HB;s or are they Daves Signature SD's?

Honestly I would say it is. You end up getting a bit more of a guitar compared to the standard Gibson V for a bit less in price.
