Overview

The 2017 High Performance HP 635 W continues Gibson’s long history of producing world-famous square shoulder body designs, such as the Hummingbird, Dove and Songwriter models. This one is a thinner, square shoulder cutaway body design, hand-built using all North American tonewoods, and handcrafted with all the beauty and style Gibson is known for offering. All of it is built in the U.S.A. under the Big Sky of Bozeman, Montana.

When you initially pick up the HP 635 W, your first response will be how comfortable and streamlined the Advanced Response neck feels–smooth and fast. Designed and engineered in Montana, great efforts were made for sculpting a neck that would unleash the player’s ability and this totally delivers. It allows you to be completely free and creative, fundamentally changing the interaction and relationship between you and your instrument. The 2017 HP 635 W's flatter radius and dense Richlite fingerboard creates a playing surface that is both smooth and fast with perfect string action, superb for complex chord voices, or intricate solo music. The domed, solid Sitka spruce top is joined with stunning walnut back and sides, and hand bound in distinctive black binding on the top and back. The two-piece maple neck is hand-fitted with a superior compound dovetail neck-to-body joint with hot hide glue, just like all Gibson Acoustic for the ultimate vibration transfer from neck-to-body.

The 2017 HP 635 W is finished off with elegant Gibson appointments, including a silver block Gibson decal on the headstock, classic mini nickel Grover tuners, superior Tusq nut and saddle, Richlite bridge and fingerboard and mother-of-pearl position markers. The onboard L.R. Baggs Element pickup system delivers the true tonal character of this Gibson acoustic. Designed and handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana it includes a hardshell case and Gibson’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Comments about Gibson 2017 High Performance HP 635 W Square Shoulder Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've had mine for a few weeks now and can say that I can see myself growing old with it. The sound, look and playability of this guitar reaches me in ways that Martin and Taylor don't. This one just felt right to me.

I really like the hidden volume control on this guitar. It's easier for me to access on the fly than those mounted on the side. I also appreciate that the wood was not cut or drilled. It's nice touch that I will probably insist on in future purchases. No batteries, no tone control, no phase switch , tuner or mute button. Simply a full sound. This model comes with a strap button on the back of the neck and others in this range didn't.

It has taken me a while to get used to maple necks on acoustic guitars. I stayed away from them for a long time but I can say that it's a fine neck, very playable just like Gibson says it is. These models have '2017'stamped into the head stock and I think that's pretty cool. The serial number says mine was made November 17, 2017. I've heard a lot of things about Richlite fret boards, good and bad but to me it just looks and feels like ebony. I really like it and wouldn't hesitate to get another guitar with a Richlite fret board.

The walnut back and side are what convinced me to buy this one. It has a great sound and a unique look that sets my guitar apart from any of my friends' guitars. The pattern on the back of mine is so pretty I bring it out of the case sometimes just to look at it. The finish is thin, and you can see that it didn't saturate the grain, allowing the texture of the wood to show through if you look close, I wasn't sure I liked that at first but I think as the guitar ages that's gonna allow it to shine.

I don't like the small tuners. I'd rather have standard size and don't see any reason for the smaller ones. The B string is louder than the others when plugged in, but that's fixable,

I've played a couple shows with it already and it's a champ!

Comments about Gibson 2017 High Performance HP 635 W Square Shoulder Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

What a treat to find this wonderful instrument. I went to GC (Independence, MO) to pick up a very special guitar for a special reason. My Mom had passed at age 90 after a prolonged confinement and left little to nothing behind. I decided to use what very little money that was left to buy me something to remember her by. I found this and after playing a couple of types and styles I picked this one. Kind of spoke to me. I played it a few months then took back to GC for a proper set up and had them go to a slightly lighter string set. It was easier with the lighter strings as my arthritis makes playing heavy strings a bit difficult. I don't think most folks will have to do that and it does not reflect poorly on the guitar it's just a physical limitation of mine. The sound projects beautifully and it feels very natural in my hands. I own a number of guitars (semi hollow, solid body and acoustic) and several other musical instruments (harp, hammered dulcimer, piano and paltry) and this one is my favorite acoustic guitar. I play folk rock and traditional Irish tunes and this guitar does beautifully in either arena.

Comments about Gibson 2017 High Performance HP 635 W Square Shoulder Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Purchased this guitar as a graduation present for my son. I have an 1978 Hummingbird and my daughter has as a 2012 J-45 Custom. This HP 635 may not have quite the volume of those two guitars (although it has plenty of volume), but it has a great tone and is so easy to play. I am so jealous of my son now, we all love playing his guitar . This is a great little guitar!

I am a recently retired and have a Martin and a Taylor Acoustic which I still totally play, but wanted a Gibson for a long time. I finally got my dream guitar. The feeling of playing this beautiful instrument is incredible. Very smooth action and the sound is very natural and just amazing. I would highly recommend this guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2017 High Performance HP 635 W Square Shoulder Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Classic full and rich Gibson sound! Sounds similar to the giant dreadnought guitars from back in the 70's. Through a microphone, this a thing sounds huge!!! But through the output it sounds like a Taylor. Crisp highs, almost jazz guitar sounding mids and a small amount of bass. The only problem I had was when I played the guitar at my local guitar center in Roseville (Awesome store btw!) ... and I loved it... went in to buy a Taylor 4 series, left with an HP 635... but... and this is big... I was brought a guitar in a box that I was able to open and check out... holy bleep! Glue all over the fret board, string buzzing everywhere, a peg that kept coming out and a burst of stain that loosed out of place on the neck. I thought it was a fluke so I tried another one… The same exact thing! Almost giving up, I tried a third one. This one still had glue by the sound hole but the string visiting was gone and the finish was perfect. I strongly suggest actually taking these things out and playing them before purchasing them. I was shocked to see such an expensive guitar Leave the factory in the condition of the first two

I've been looking for an acoustic i could live with for quite some time. I'd played a ton of vintage acoustic guitars, but couldn't find one that really spoke to me. This is the one, and I'm in love with it every time i pick it up.
