Three decades ago, the G&L L-2000 bass served notice that company founder Leo Fender was ready to disrupt the status quo. The bold, brash L-2000 has always been an exhilarating experience for players with the skill to pull it off. Now the new M-2000 and M-2500 harness that power with a sonic palate that will surprise and delight new and die-hard G&L fans alike.

Leo's MFD humbuckers have always been the heart of the iconic L-Series. In the all-new M-Series, these powerhouses are voiced to fully exploit a studio-quality 18V preamp system specially designed by G&L's R&D wizard Paul Gagon. With an LF442 chip, 100V poly caps, 1% metal film resistors and big, fat signal traces on the mil-spec circuit board, this preamp reveals everything the player and the instrument have to offer.

And there's even more:
¢ Primary volume and pan controls to explore the full range of sounds available between the two pickups
¢ 3-band EQ with peripherally placed, center-detent, reduced-diameter knobs
¢ An impeccable, familiar "feel" of the instrument in the hands and on the shoulder
¢ The return of the classic C-shape 1-5/8" neck, discontinued by G&L in the 1980s

For slapping, rolling back some highs and dialing up some lows, coupled with a mid-range boost, magnifies the intensity that Leo's humbuckers are famous for. Need more definition for fingerstyle? Just bring up the treble and roll off the bass for a nuanced and detailed sound. Headroom? The new M-Series preamp harnesses the power of those meaty MFD humbuckers without a hint of clipping. The best tools are simple, intuitive and easy to use, and that's exactly what you'll find in the new M-Series package.

Outstanding bass

By John Hawkins

from Saint Helena, CA

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

This is a very fine bass - great action and sustain (very solid bridge), excellent neck (satin finish makes it very easy to move around), lots of variety in tone - very clear and punchy. Good balance and weight for extended gigs. I hate to say it, but I enjoy it as much as my $1,800 Music Man Sterling, a bass that I also love.

Killer pups

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

Ordered the tribute L2000 couple years ago and sent it back cause I just couldn't get a good tone, and I sure tried. Anyway, the M2000 is a huge improvement, probably sounds the best of my lot which includes Rik, Fender, and Ibanez(1200 E, the premium with Nordstrands). Made in Indonesia but no quality issues, and looks great in blue burst. In a band setting really cut thru the mix, and I hate to admit this but actually better than my Fender p special. Neck is a few mm ticker than a jazz but no hinderance. I guess my only less than perfect rating would be for the tuners, it goes a little out of tune day to day. No biggie. I can't imagine that the American model could get much better and I wold recommend against spending the extra money. Mine is usually eq'd at almost full bass and treble with the midrange completely cut. Nice and ballsy like that but the possibilities are wide open.

A $680 bass, sold for $400, that sounds and plays like a $1200 bass!

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

I will level set right now. My current basses are a 2010 Classic Stingray 4H and a 2008 Fender Am Std Jazz. Direct comparisons of the M-2000 to either of those is not fair considering all 3 are completely different animals, regardless of the obvious USA vs Indonesia argument. That said on with my review of the Indonesian made G&L M-2000 Tribute. My bass shipped to my local GC. I bought it sight unseen and unplayed. My only experience with G&L Tributes was a 2008 L-2500, which was 'ok'. I opened the box right there at the counter. It was factory packaged so I know I wasn't getting a B stock bass. The build, construction, finish and parts (tuners, knobs, etc) are very good. The frets are dressed. The tuners, bridge, nut are all mounted solidly. The EQ knobs turn smoothly. The volume and blend knobs have a small area where I can feel a bit of friction when I turn them, but nothing major. The neck is bolted solid with the 6 bolts. I am very, very satisfied with the way the bass arrived right out of the box! It doesn't feel like a $400 bass! The bass feels about the same weight as my Stingray. It?s not light but it?s not heavy either. I use a 2? Comfort Strap so weight is not an issue for me. It has a bit of neck dive, which my Tribute L-2500 also had. I guess it?s a G&L Tribute thing. I installed Dunlop Straplocks and that 1/2? or so on each end seem to help level it a bit. If the slight dive becomes bothersome I?ll just put Hipshot Ultralites on it and call it a day. The neck is smooth. Tuners and bridge are solid. The nut is plastic but is cut clean and mounted properly. Impressive for the $400 price tag. I played it at GC, right out of the box and it played decently. Moderate action and tension after tuning it. I changed the strings to Dunlop Super Bright Steel 105-45 and the bass settled in very well without any adjustment to the truss and only minor adjustment to the E and A saddles. The bass plays effortlessly now with no buzz, low tension and low action! Again, impressive for the $400 price tag. The M-2000 sounded great right out of the box with the stock strings which I believe are D?Addario nickels, 40-100. Not my preference of strings but sounded very good through any of the amps at GC. I changed the strings to the ones noted above and it sounds even better through my rig (GK700rb and 2 GK NEO112 Series I cabs). I haven?t fully explored all the tonal options because I can?t get past playing it with Treble flat, Mid flat, Bass bumped up just a nudge and the blend in middle (both pickups). It has LOTS of headroom! The 18v preamp has balls to the wall! I run my volume full (old habit from playing my passive Jazz). The MFD pickups are IN YOUR FACE but not obnoxious like the L-2500. Just full, robust and rich tone! The combination of the preamp and MFD?s really make very slight EQ adjustments significantly audible. I have no problem taking the M-2000 to a gig or recording session over my Jazz or ?Ray! Tonally it is what I want in an active HH bass the same way my Jazz is what I want in a passive dual single coil and my Stingray is what I want in an active single H. I bought the M-2000 to fit a specific role. I wanted an active, dual hum bucker (HH) bass and couldn?t afford to drop $1500 on a Stingray HH. At the $400 price, it has exceeded all expectations and fullfilled my tonal desires in this configuration! Not to mention, it is built very well considering it?s made in Indonesia. I will go as far to say that the M-2000 Tribute that I received stands up to my Stingray and Jazz in that regard! I must?ve gotten lucky and didn?t get a bass built on Friday afternoon or Monday morning! ;) I would suggest this specific bass (black/maple) at the $400 price to anyone. In my opinion, it is in a class above any of the other ?offshore? offerings by Fender, Squier, Sterling By Musicman, SUB, etc!
