Overview

The second generation Scarlett range is packed full of upgrades. Scarlett generation 2 features super-low latency that will bring confidence to your performance, letting you record and monitor with software effects in real time. Its metal volume controls and a sleeker red metal chassis underscore its improved industrial design, built to go anywhere. Scarlett USB audio interfaces also now operate at sample rates all the way up to 192kHz, and the input channels have evolved too. The latest Scarlett mic preamp features a more even gain structure, so you can accurately set your levels, and the instrument input has also been completely redesigned so it can handle seriously hot pickups for recording electric guitar.

The compact and flexible Scarlett 2i4 is a 2-in, 4-out USB audio interface that makes it easy to perform and record studio quality audio against a cue mix. Take it anywhere, connect by USB and get two natural-sounding Scarlett mic preamps, super-low latency, MIDI I/O, four analogue outputs and the same class-leading sound quality and digital conversion as the rest of the latest Scarlett range.

Focusrite interfaces are the perfect partner for Pro Tools, so Scarlett 2i4 comes with Pro Tools | First recording software, as well as Ableton Live Lite and a suite of software and samples so you can start recording straight away. As you’d expect, it works flawlessly with all major DAWs on Mac and PC.

Focusrite continues to add value to their products, long after the purchase is complete, by bringing monthly plug-in deals to customers through the Focusrite Plug-In Collective. The only reason I wouldn't list this as good for professional recording is the limited number of inputs. I used to own two professional recording studios, with big budget boards. I moved into another career several years ago and recently started some home recording, just for fun. This little unit sounds and performs amazingly well. Using Reaper, I can run over 30 tracks, loaded with plugins and have absolutely no discernible latency issue. Focusrite mic pres have long been known for their quality and transparency. That's a key word. If you're looking for the warmer British sound, this is not it. This little box is VERY transparent. It delivers exactly, the sound you create with your voice and instrument. I'm buying the 18i8 today, because I'm so impressed and want to run outboard effects.

I bought this to replace my old but reliable E-MU 1616m PCI E that ran in 3 home studio PC setups for over a decade.
All of the mastering and plugin use are done elsewhere. The home setup is simply for tracking, sketching ideas, simple beat production.
I had a due date for a radio mix and when my 1616 finally gave out, I ran to GC for a quick fix until my Apollo came in.
It took the better part of 1/2 the day to get it up and running. Latency, cracks & pops are the major issues. When you're running any process on your computer, you can hear ghost sounds in the monitors. The recording is what you expect out of something that's a couple of hundred bucks. Don't expect to be able to create an accurate mix down with this interface. The device kicks out tons of high freq and lacks on the low end when attempting to "master" something. Also after you bounce a session, make sure you listen to the entire mix on a separate system like your car because this garbage likes to add crackles.

Spend the money on real gear... even if you're a novice, a DJ or someone looking to make good music for yourself.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Generation) USB Audio Interface:

Bought the focusrong 2i4 for a compact simple recording interface for sketching ideas on my workstation, and for light A/V projects. Out of the box the drivers did not work with the eviscerated version of poortools that shipped with the unit. After installing the ridiculous DRM laden junkware bundle that the unit ships with I was extremely frustrated as nothing worked right. Errors in poortools saying it couldnt init the hardware, 500 errors when logging into focusrites site, etc. Nothing but frustration. This pile of junk goes back to GC ASAP.

Focusrong and poortools....a match made in hell.

This is easily the most negative experience I have ever had with an audio interface and its junkware bundle in my entire life. from poortools just crashing out randomly, to not initializing the interface, to not being able to perform the simplest of recording. this is an exercise in frustration. When I finally got junktools to record it crashed about 2 minutes into my recording. with a 6025 pure virtual function call error. Basically the drivers and software are very poorly written, and obviously not well tested. Steer clear of this pile of junk.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Generation) USB Audio Interface:

I should have never bought this piece of trash that the GC guy recommended. Nothing but issues from high latency issues to cracking interference noises. And don't get me started I run a high end PC with 32Gb ram, i7 CPU, 1TB SSD flash so it is the garbage design of the hardware and software drivers do not work well. The tech support leaves much to desire as they are overseas and respond 1-2 days later. Nothing the tech recommend fix the latency issues. So this goes back asap for a refund! I ended up having to spend more for a decent audio interface like Babyface RME Pro that is not junk!

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Generation) USB Audio Interface:

Well, The unit works fine on my Windows 10 64 bit machine which is what I bought it for. It has a very detailed dry sound which some equate to transparency but is not as detailed and transparent as a really high end component. The software is minimalist at best making it unsuitable as a playback device for every day use. I use it mostly for guitar practice with headphones and I can get the latency under 3 ms but ASIO buffer overruns will treat you with a big blast of noise so I generally live with a 4ms latency and no noise bursts. Overall it works very well. I would reccomend it. I have no experience with any other low end interfaces.

Great Interface with One Minor Issue

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Generation) USB Audio Interface:

Overall this is a really good audio interface that works good with my MacBook Air and IPad Pro. I did run into a scenario when connecting the unit to a usb hub and the camera connection adapter for the iPad where ground loop noise was introduced to the recordings. After troubleshooting the connections, I solved the issue which was that I had to plug the iPad cable into the charging port of the camera connection adapter and plug the other side of the cable into a separate outlet/surge protector. The USB hub was powered on its own outlet/surge protector and this eliminated the ground loop noise. Not the best solution but it works for me so I wouldn't have to buy one of those fancy noise/hum eliminators. I find that the Pad feature is absolutely necessary for my guitars and this works as advertised. I have no problems with running an NT1A microphone from the unit, it sounds good. Just be aware that with the IPad and a powere USB hub that there is potential for ground loop noise.

I bought this and after a week, the unit started making crackling sounds and distortion causing it to be useless for serious recording. Tech support is a joke and they never get back to you since they are overseas in New Zealand! Now have to return this for a better brand and pay more.
