Overview

The second generation Scarlett range is packed full of upgrades. Scarlett generation 2 features super-low latency that will bring confidence to your performance, letting you record and monitor with software effects in real time. Its metal volume controls and a sleeker red metal chassis underscore its improved industrial design, built to go anywhere. Scarlett USB audio interfaces also now operate at sample rates all the way up to 192kHz, and the input channels have evolved too. The latest Scarlett mic preamp features a more even gain structure, so you can accurately set your levels, and the instrument input has also been completely redesigned so it can handle seriously hot pickups for recording electric guitar.

The latest generation Scarlett 18i8 is an 18-in, 8-out USB interface that's ideal for multi-instrumentalists, producers and small bands who want to record audio from a wide range of sources such as drums, guitars, keyboards and vocals. It's Focusrite's most comprehensive desktop interface, giving you four mic preamps, round-trip latency as low as 2.74ms, class-leading sound quality, and two separate headphone outputs, so you can give different monitoring settings to two artists, or an engineer and artist. It's also expandable over ADAT.

Focusrite interfaces are the perfect partner for Pro Tools, so Scarlett 18i8 comes with Pro Tools | First recording software, as well as Ableton Live Lite and a suite of software and samples so you can start recording straight away. As you’d expect, it works flawlessly with all major DAWs on Mac and PC.

Focusrite continues to add value to their products, long after the purchase is complete, by bringing monthly plug-in deals to customers through the Focusrite Plug-In Collective. Each month registered owners of Focusrite products will receive an exclusive code via email to unlock a free or discounted plug-in from the world’s leading plug-in companies. See the rebate PDF on this page for details on this month’s plug-in from Focusrite.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I bought this to upgrade from a MAudio MTrack that I had been using for years. The MTrack was useful but I needed more inputs and frankly, it was a brat to connect to Ardour under Linux. I scoured the internet seeking a modern replacement that featured seamless integration with Linux drivers and had the latest no-latency, no-noise hardware voodoo. Included DAW software was a secondary consideration and yes, I run Windows 10 too but using Ardour under Ubuntu Studio has always been my never-obsolete DAW solution.

At the time of purchase, the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 met the primary requirements that I mentioned above. GuitarCenter made my decision easier by including a 15 percent GuitarCenter bucks promotion with the product. I have yet to receive the bucks as the promotion included a delay clause, but I am sure it will be honored as all my previous dealings with GuitarCenter have been exemplary. So, I bought the Focusrite on-line and had it mailed to me as my local store did not stock it. That required creating a GuitarCenter on-line account that I have used several times since. My order shipped quickly through UPS and arrived without incident.

I have connected the 18i8 to both of my computers... one running Windows 10 and the other Ubuntu Studio. The computers are identical with quad-core Intel® Core™2 Duo CPUs and 8 GB of RAM. I multiplex the 18i8 into the machines with an auto-sensing USB switch and I have installed the included Ableton 9 Lite DAW onto the Windows machine. I am impressed with the performance of the 18i8 on both installations. No noise and negligible latency... especially when using the 18i8 Direct Monitoring feature.

Am I satisfied? Yes, with qualifications. Since purchasing the 18i8 I have become intrigued with a competing product that didn't exist at the time that features wireless connectivity and more channels. I have also experienced one shutdown incident that was quickly solved by Focusrite support and was not entirely the 18i8's fault.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

3 words "No Hardware Connected", the focusrite website does not provide you with necessary downloads to allow this thing to work. I've downloaded all the drivers that it says I need to and I have downloaded the software. And yet after clicking the software it constantly says "No Hardware Connected" I've read the UserGuide, watched every video, Troubleshooted, and looked through the entire website. Disappointed definitely gonna try and return.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I produced an album on my IMack using the Scarlett I181 interface. I am not at all technical by nature but the I181 was very easy to learn. And the album "Trucks to Trains" by Paul Click came out great.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

Stupidly purchased this 18i8 2nd gen to replace an 18i6 that completely died. I liked the features offered by the 18i8 so I went for it. Right out of the box, my audio system had trouble recognizing the interface. I was able to find a "beta driver" on a hidden Focusrite website that allowed Windows to see the interface, but the Focusrite Control software (necessary for setting up monitoring, etc.) will still not see the interface. I have messaged Focusrite support via email and Facebook with no response, going on a week now. I plan on returning this unit in favor of something with a better track record of driver compatibility and support, probably MOTU.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I bought this after using my friend's smaller interface also made by Focusrite, and have to say I was worried with the amount of money I was spending (I had just lost a job and couldn't work due to some other commitments) that it wouldn't work/ would break/ would be too difficult to use. I can say that this has not been the case, and any problem you might have with latency, inputs, software not recognizing the interface, etc. can usually be solved with a quick google search, and even then you'll find it's usually due to a bad cable that you're using. I've recorded a few songs with this 18i8 and all my friends say that they sound great, and I even have a few other friends who use the same brand for recording and haven't run into any issues. Worth the buy if you're trying to record yourself but unless you're recording drums with three to five separate mics I would suggest that you purchase a smaller version with less inputs as you likely won't need so many.
