Overview

Since its original release in 1964, the Mustang Bass has been one of Fender’s most enduring bass designs, finding its way into the hands of bassists ranging from The Rolling Stones to My Chemical Romance. This updated version of the short-scale underground hero adds the power of our venerable P Bass and J Bass pickups to the traditional Mustang design for flexible, thunderous bass tone with smooth playing feel and slick visual style.

Powered by a time-tested pair of pickups, the Mustang Bass PJ is packed with flexible tone that can match any sonic requirement. A punchy split single-coil P Bass middle pickup is joined by a growling Jazz Bass neck pickup in an unbeatable pairing that combines the best of both sonic worlds. Master volume and tone controls, along with a conventional three-way pickup switch get you to all available sounds. Not only is the 30 in. scale more comfortable for smaller hands, it reduces string tension, creating a looser playing feel that lends itself to nimble playing styles while adding a fat, “blooming” quality to the lower notes and sweetening the higher notes. Topped by a 9.5 in.-radius rosewood fingerboard with 19 medium jumbo frets, the “C”-shaped maple neck is comfortable for all playing styles.

This bass’ smaller body easily fits those with smaller frames while maintaining Fender’s classic stylistic appeal, and is also great for energetic stage performances thanks to its light weight. In a nod to its roots, this modernized instrument includes vintage-style Fender tuning machines and a vintage-style disc string tree, along with a four-bolt neck plate and standard four-saddle string-through-body bridge—all finished in gleaming chrome. Case sold separately.

This is my first Mustang and I'm really very impressed. The short scale is a welcomed change and I do find it easier to get around on the fretboard. This is my third Mexican Fender and the quality control these days is top notch, really on par with Japanese, which is high praise from me, and not much far behind USA. I read a review of someone knocking the pickups but I disagree, Its got that familiar single coil tone that everyone loves from Fenders. And I would have loved to have gotten a discount but I paid full price and it is a fair asking price. The sonic blue color has a cool retro vibe. I'm very happy with mine, no regrets.

It such a different guitar when playing it standing and sitting. I played it sitting at the store and liked it a lot then brought a strap along and found it wanting. I purchased it anyway thinking I would adapt. The lack of balance was usable but the restricted play ability above the 7th fret became annoying. I'm going to try an acoustic guitar strap to the head stock to see if that positions the bass better.

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

Guitar is nice. No complaints there. But had to return the first one due to a scratch, and the second one came damaged (poorly packed by a store in non original box, no tags or paperwork... was "new"). I sent an email to GC and no reply so far. Bummer. I have you guys a lot of $ over the years, but unless someone makes good on this, I'm out.

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

I've been a guitar player my whole life, and I've owned 4 basses prior to this one - you know... just for sitting in w/ jams, maybe to record song ideas at home, etc - and they always just sat in the closet getting dusty because the long-scale wide frets were uncomfortable to play for me. This bass looks, feels, sounds spectacular and it plays like butter compared to others, I've already put it thru the moves again and again and so far this is turning me into a bass player! lol

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

I've been looking for a good Short Scale Bass for years, and this Fender Mustang is easily the nicest one I've found, it's at a great price with a wide range of tones. Generally the Shorty Basses (30 inch neck) are thought of as being for kids or beginners, and are made at that level of quality averaging around $200, but this Fender Mustang, with it's combination of the Vintage Style "Precision" and "Jazz" pick-ups and 3-Way Switch... the second I plugged it in I could hear the difference in the sound.

Playing it through just a 6 inch Ampeg Amp at Guitar Center, with all the amp's Highs, Mids, & Lows set to "5" I could get an incredible range of sounds out of this Bass. With the "P" pick-up switched on and the Tone Knob off, you get a super low, clean, "thumping" sound, good for Hard Rock, Dance or Disco music... with the "J" pick-up switched on and the Tone Knob all the way up, it gets a great "twangy" "snappy" Funk, Punk, Jazz, or Surf sound, and with the 3-Way Switch set in the middle you can get various combinations of sounds between the "Precision" and "Jazz" pick-ups and Knobs, all with the warm Vintage Fender sound of their 60's and 70's Basses, which I personally love.

What I like about the Short Scale is that I find it more fun, faster, and easier to play, because I tend to use it like a big fat Rhythm Guitar at times. So playing chords, harmonics, and octaves, I find all work better on a Shorty Bass than a Full Scale (34 inch neck), plus I like to play down tuned and with over drive as well, which makes this little bass sound like a monster.

My only real complaint is the color choices... Fender should seriously consider doing this one in Black, or at have some options for the Pick Guard, but I'm extremely happy with the one I got, and if you're looking for a versatile sounding bass at a good price, this is the one to own. I doubt I'll ever need to buy another Short Scale Bass but it'd be nice to see more options at the same level as this Mustang PJ

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

The product itself is fine..... it's the packaging that was disappointing. If you spend the money for a Fender and Guitar Center refuses to honor coupons for Fender....... then for sure it should at least show up in a Fender box. Instead it was shipped in an Ibanez box.

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

Excellent Bass. I got mine used for roughly $450. I swapped the bridge for a hipshot high mass bridge and swapped the tuner to light weight lollipop tuners to help with neck-dive and I think they look pretty awesome too! Only other issue I have had was the 3-way switch. It is kind of positional, sometimes cuts out on the bridge pickup. All in all though, great short scale bass. I would recommend but be willing to possibly make a few upgrades along the way.

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

I just got this bass three days ago and I'm beyond stoked.

My main player has been a MusicMan Bongo 4 which is an outstanding bass. I consider the build quality of the Mustang PJ to be on par with the Bongo at a fraction of the price.

The neck is a shiny piece of maple with great figuring and the setup has very low action without buzzing :)

I'm most impressed by the huge low end the Mustang has. Playing on the neck pickup with the tone rolled off, this bass sounds gigantic!!! The bridge pickup does a convincing jazz sound as well. It's also extremely comfortable to play. The Mustang PJ is my new favorite bass!

Comments about Fender Mustang PJ Bass, Rosewood Fingerboard:

Accept this bass for its positive qualities--lightweight, fun to play, sounds decent enough. It is a Short Scale bass--30"--and you can't change physics. You must change the factory strings to heavy gauge, 110 (E String) at least. A SS bass will always lack sustain and the "feel good" harmonics compared to a full size 34" bass. You'll see a lot of advice about how to fix intonation issues with a short-scale bass, such as use strings ONLY made for Short Scale Basses only because otherwise the windings wrap around the tuning post and cause intonation to go out of whack, or they'll break, seriously??!! its freakin steel. The guys at Guitar Center were also confident this is the cure, but you still have other problems even with Short Scale bass strings, where the windings at the ball end are too long and go over the bridge--even worse in my opinion. I tried everything, and found heavy gauge strings--at least a 110 on E--minimizes those weird harmonics, and makes a huge difference. And guess what??!! They don't make short scale bass strings at 110 or higher! But i just use full length strings without any problems. however the same problem happens at the bridge or ball end, whether or not they're short scale or regular long scale strings--the double windings there go over the bridge and that must cause worse problems with tone. so you can add a few little washers or a metal spacer at the end of the string to lengthen it so the point where the wrap over windings stop before it gets the bridge.
