Overview

How can a modern legend like the Mustang digital amplifiers be improved? Simple—Fender did it again, bigger and better with the Mustang GT 40. Fender made it easy to control a studio’s worth of authentic amp and effects models with one finger via Bluetooth and the exclusive Fender Tone app. Fender invented the world’s first WiFi-equipped guitar amplifier, making it easy for you to download the latest updates, access Fender artist-created presets, and connect directly with a community of other creative players and music makers like yourself. Fender created the Mustang GT 40 digital amplifier.

Packed with 21 classic amp models—everything from the renowned ’59 Bassman to modern metal—and 46 different effects, the Mustang GT 40 can easily recreate classic tones or create brand-new, never-before-heard sounds. Fender developed new algorithms with even higher fidelity and more realistic response, along with more signal path flexibility so you can move effects anywhere in the signal chain for creative exploration. Program your sounds in the studio on the Mustang GT 40’s large, full-color LCD display and then, with one hand, take them anywhere for the most realistic listening experience possible.

Fender invented inspiring tone, and our updated amp models let your instrument’s voice and the dynamic nuances of your playing come through, reacting just like the originals to your every move. Lighten your attack to “clean up” your sound or dig in to make it grunt or howl—the Mustang GT 40 and its dual 6-in. Fender Special Design speakers reproduce every part of your performance or Bluetooth wireless audio stream with precision. Adding the optional MGT-4 4-button footswitch for hands-free preset/FX switching and looper control turns the Mustang GT 40 into a truly formidable performance powerhouse.

Adding convenient, one-finger control to the Mustang GT 40’s power is the easy-to-use Fender Tone app. Not only can you connect to the Fender Digital ecosystem for learning and sharing, you can easily upgrade the amp’s capabilities, adding more power and presets without patching a single cable or plugging in a soldering iron. One amp for every stage, the Mustang GT 40 is easy for any player but powerful enough to go around the world.

I'm not the guy who can identify every amp that has ever been made just by listening for a few seconds. I've only been playing for a couple of years and this is my third amp. I had a Line 6 Spider IV 15, a Fender Mustang 1 v2, and now this, the GT40. I've had lots of fun with both of my previous amps. I have especially enjoyed the all of the tones, Fuse, and connecting to Logic and Garage Band with the Mustang 1 v2. Okay. Enough of the past. Let's talk about the GT40. It's awesome. The two 6.5 inch speakers have range that you have to hear to believe. It plays way bigger than it looks and doesn't skimp on the low end. The connectivity is super cool. Connecting to wifi to download amp models and updates is really easy. Using the Tone app via bluetooth to control the amp is super easy and straight forward. It sounds good streaming music as a bluetooth speaker, or backing tracks and drum loops for practice. If I was still in college in a dorm, this would be both my amp and my speaker for listening to music. You also have complete control of all amp models and effects directly, using knobs, buttons, and the display on the amp. Fender made the right choice in including all of the same user interface and options across all three amps in the GT line. If you like something on one of them, you can do it on any of them. Just with more power on the bigger models. If I have one complaint it's that they didn't take this approach all the way through. I would have happily paid a bit more for a 40GT that also has the XLR out and effects loop that the bigger models have. Just because I want a small less powerful amp, doesn't mean that I can't use these features. But seriously, that's my only complaint. I can still connect to my computer workstation via USB. And with the four button foot switch I get looper, tuner, and effects control. So...not that big of a complaint. But it would have been nice. Just go play one. Maybe you'll love it as much as me.

Bottom line upfront.

This little amp has a ton of features and has a lot of potential. Unfortunately fender released this amp a little too early. Many of the initial problems with the app have been fixed and features added in updates. For example, at release the master volume did not control the volume of streaming music. Now there is an option for this. This is the best part of the amp. It evolves as long a fender chooses to support the platform.

Biggest gripe that I've seen is the stock sound. Many people describe it as muffled or out -of-phase or
Hi-Fi. I agree for the most part.

However, much of this is attributed to some poor cabinet simulations and a "deep" amp option called Sag.
The default Sag setting is "matched". Changing this to "less" tends to open up the amp. Not sure why fender chooses a bad default. Also, most people looking at using this amp probably have no idea that this exits or what it is trying to emulate.

Another big improvement to the sound comes from using EQ effects. Fender updated the effects to include multi band and dynamic EQ.

The Good:
Many effects and amp models.
Size
Weight
Fully controllable from front panel.
Fender has made a number of good updates since first releasing the amp.

The Bad:.
Many stock presets sound hi-fi.
Fender used early adopters as beta test.
The app is buggy, but has been improved.

Biggest Problems:
You cant (currently) control the amp and stream music simultaneously
Streaming from ipad and google play randomly drops the bluetooth connection.

Overall:
I've had good results with the sounds that this amp can produce, but it takes some time to figure out how to dial in the tone. Only buy if you are willing to be patient and can see the potential. Otherwise you may be sending this back.

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I've had several modeling amps/boards over the years looking for a complete clean to mean package,
(Boss, Line 6, Vox) and the Mustang GT is by far the most versatile with the best overall sounds for my style. Great for rock, mellow, alternative etc, and it can get downright nasty, but that's not it's wheelhouse. My Strat sings with this thing running clean or with a little bluesy crunch. It sounds really smooth fully overdriven as well with some Eric Johnson-ish tone on the Strat and my Jackson rips on full gain, but it's probably not the best choice if you play hard core high gain all the time. Peavey Vypyr or Boss Katana win out in the pure metal category IMHO.

The speakers are small but sound very nice. Give them a few days to break in and they will sound even smoother.

The USB audio is fairly useless if you are using a real DAW for recording. The USB audio is output only. To hear anything back you will need to have 2 audio sources on your PC, and that means WDM drivers or the dreaded ASIO4All. Best way to record is with a mic or send the headphone out to your DAW audio input.

WiFi connectivity is a nice feature, it allows you to get firmware updates and download additional presets right from the amp. This is a great feature since the Tone app for Android is basically useless at launch. If you have an iPhone or other iOS device you will have access to all the Tone app's features from day one. Fender is promising updates to the Android app ASAP, but we'll see.

All negatives aside, I'm still quite happy with my purchase. Regardless if they work out the bugs on the app/software side, it's still a great sounding amp and that is exactly what I was looking for.

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

This amp has many bugs. The Tone App is finicky and ignores common Android ease-of-use standards. Neither the Tone App nor the Amp itself will connect to wifi, so the firmware can't be updated and the "cloud" of user generated sounds can't be accessed. I bought the MGT-4 Footswitch. This too is poor. To bank up or down you must step on 2 buttons at once. Each bank accesses only 3 sequential presets. For example, you start on preset 22, so you can access 22-23-24, then you have to step on two buttons to go up to 25-26-27. There is a SETLIST feature on the amp that let's you personalize a preset sequence, say 22-75-32-66-41 . . . however YOU CANNOT access the setlist through the footswitch. This is completely unusable in a band practice setting and forget about live use. There is no PC app.

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

Traded in an old tube amp for this, as I don't gig and the tube amp could rattle windows with the volume set to 2. Tried one of these out in store, figured the small size and versatility would match my needs pretty well.
Overall, there were some problems. Let it be known the first thing Ii did was update to the latest firmware. First and foremost issue being that the App for Android had VERY limited functionality. Initially I could work with it, despite not being able to connect to stuff from the tone cloud, but then the next time I opened the App and tried to dial in a new tone, half of my stompboxes were simply nowhere to be found in the app, gone. Not an option to add any more. That said, I could manually put them in via the amp interface itself, and could make due. According to what I read this isn't the case with iOS devices.
The amp has a great premise and honestly, a great platform otherwise, and the clean tones are phenominal. I had the 40w version with the 2 6.5in speakers, which to me, sounded boxed in, or like they had a blanket over them . not a problem when ran through headphones though.
The nail in the coffin though, was using it as a bluetooth speaker. There was sufficient lag between video and audio, and the master volume/volume knobs do NOTHING when it's used as a speaker. it is solely based on your devices volume setting. At one point, mid song via bluetooth, despite my devices volume not even being halfway up, the speakers started to be choppy and distorted, as if they had been pushed to hard. This went away when I re-started the amp.

Long story short, I feel as though Fender may have released this amp just a too early. The new selling point of this series was the bluetooth capability and the App. I feel these features should have really been polished and perfected before release, for both Apple and Android. And should have maybe gone a different route with the speaker/cab choice, to really get a good, concise tone even when played distorted.

I'm an intermediate player and I had an old Marshall 240 watt amp that is too heavy to move around and frankly can't produce the sounds that this little guy can. I love this amp. Had some issues with the app malfunctioning but seems to be solved after I reinstalled app. So many great sounding amps and presets plus you can modify everything to find your sound. Super fun for home practice.

I just started playing guitar and this is my first amp. I bought it because the guy at GC told me it was the best deal they had and he was right. This amp does everything and is loud. I haven't had much chance to connect to the internet and try other sounds but I will. I have a Jay Turser Strat and it makes my guitar sound excellent. The guy at GC was right don't see why I'd need another amp. If you are looking for a great amp this is it and its less then $300. I don't know why the pros don't play this amp. Maybe they do I don't know but its great.

The wifi may be my fault I didn't spend allot of time on it. I was mostly tooling around with all the presets it came with.

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I bought my GT40 from my local GC. I was looking for a more versatile bedroom amp to replace my Line 6 Spider 15 Classic. It was a perfectly good amp for its function but I didn't care for the lack of functionality.
So I had 3 Amps in mind when I went, gt40, Bugera Infinium V5 tube amp & pedals, and the Katana.
I spent near 3 hours trying to decide. The Katana is really similar to the gt40 but more difficult to use but about $40 cheaper. The Bugera is $199 all tube, but no effects and trying to push overdrive just made it loud which is a plus if you just wanna go with a clean amp and fx. That would end up costing a lot more however.
The GT40 had excellent performance, the 2x6.5 delivers a surprising tonal clarity at high volume. The ease of creating your own tones is crazy good.
The Not-So-Good: with the app you can create new presets as fully as you can with the amp, however, there is a solely visual bug that puts the previous setting to ten when you change another one. I know this is a visual issue only because the settings don't go to ten on the amp display.
The ONLY downside to the GT40 is there is no physical mid knob. It can be change on the amp with the master control knob however.
For its function, I give this amp a solid 9.8 because theres no mid knob

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

One of the biggest selling points of the Mustang GT40 over other small footprint amps for me was the size. I actually wanted a small amp that would fit well on a table, making getting to the controls easy from where I was sitting/lounging/laying around. The other was my familiarity and fondness of the Fender amp tones/presets/effects available on Mustang amps, I just haven't heard any other small footprint amps with better ones (other amps all have a clean, crunchy, extra-crunchy, etc. setting, but none sound as good or seem to be as flexible as the Mustang's in my opinion.) The GT interface is much easier to modify than previous iterations, and the "Tone" app takes getting to and modifying these sounds to an insanely easy level. I also like that my Fender Expression pedal still works with it. I play with headphones or right next to my amp anyway, so any loss in presence or volume from smaller speakers isn't a big concern. The WIFI firmware updates are a bonus as well.

Comments about Fender Mustang GT 40 40W 2x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier:

Just started trying out the thing. Probably will take me a white to go through the more than 100 sound outputs. Good, powerful unit in a small footprint.

Always digging deeper into this amp and finding new ways to tweak and fine tune the sound and have really been awed by the potential. Don't be immediately turned off by negative reviews. Play one and dig into it...

Incredible sound and depth. The stereo effects are easy to use and are better than any pedal in my collection. I bought two of these.

Paired this amp with a SS92 Sonic Maximizer by BBE and a Bad Horsie 2 wah and with a little experimenting I'm getting some of the tones in my head. I'm content to give this one 5 stars under those conditions.
