Overview

In the pantheon of great amps, there are few that stand the test of time like the Fender Princeton and its signature clean tones. There’s that long, luscious spring reverb that lets players dial in everything from ethereal echoes to cavernous swirls. There’s that recognizable Princeton tremolo, which pulses with pure Fender character through every passage and performance. And then there’s the unmistakable tonal character that only a Princeton can offer; growling lows, shimmering highs and the classic breakup of the 6V6 tubes and 10 in. speaker when pushed to the brink.

The Princeton, in its most classic form, has been revered as a stage and studio must-have, and its presence on the most famous albums and riveting stage shows of all time further substantiates that claim. Clearly, its rich tone and responsiveness have given it an unmistakable voice. Fender’s latest partnership with Musician’s Friend and Guitar Center, however, proves that even the most perfect amplifier has room for modification.

That updated collaboration—the Fender Limited Edition Princeton 112 Bordeaux Reserve—ups the ante on the tone box that made its way in to the living rooms, studios and stages of Fender lovers. It incorporates one of the most popular Princeton mods—the inclusion of a larger, 12 in. Jensen P12Q speaker—allowing for a fuller frequency response, a perceived volume boost and clearer midrange. The exciting effort is an extension of Princeton legacy that, literally and figuratively, has been simply unheard of outside of the garages and tool benches of gearhounds and mod addicts.

“We wanted to do something different for Fender fans that they haven’t seen or heard before,” said Rick Heins, Fender product development manager for amplifiers. With its stellar combination of new features, striking good looks and improved full-frequency response, the Limited Edition Princeton 112 Bordeaux Reserve delivers on that promise without sacrificing the signature sound of the amp prized and recognized for well more than a half-century.

The relationship between classic Fender amps and Jensen speakers has long existed, and they’ve long been part of the recipe that results in those beloved tones. But true to its namesake, the switch from 10 in. to 12 in. speaker serves up a little something extra for tone chasers—crystal clear wine glass fidelity with plenty of low-end punch and attitude when cranked—a slight differentiation from the tonal quality of the famous Princeton.

The Limited Edition Princeton 112 Bordeaux Reserve is a drool-worthy collectable for the discerning amp enthusiast seeking a cosmetically unique amp as well. Also in line with its moniker, the Bordeaux Reserve features a classy yet understated wine red textured vinyl covering and, paired with traditional wheat-colored grille cloth, offers an air of sophistication that only a Fender Princeton can exude.

The Bordeaux Reserve is available exclusively at select Guitar Center locations as well as MusiciansFriend.com and GuitarCenter.com.

I use this at home and plan to use it out at churches and small venues. The sound with the 12" Jensen is awesome and this amp has all you need for most any circumstance. Takes pedals well. Has a nicer mild break up at mid volume and the 12" Jensen gives it a full sound of a larger amp.
Mic'd this amp is all you will need unless you are on a concert trail. It replaced a 90 # twin reverb and tge nice under 40 lb weight is a delight.

I would use this amp for a trio that plays blues or jazz.this is all you really need. The only pedal I would even think of using would be a delay for some widening of the sound while playing a solo,or a melody .You do not need overdrive or distortion.Just push the amp a little with some volume from the guitar.I like my amp to sound natural ,and this amp sounds that way.

Excellent amp!

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

This version of the Princeton reissue is amazing. I have the regular 65 Princeton Reissue as well, but the 12" Jensen in this Limited Edition version is better, IMHO (not to discount the regular Princeton, which is a great amp). I was debating between this amp and the Limited Edition Deluxe Reverb through Sweetwater, which I had the chance to play for a while. In terms of perceived volume I would say that this LE Princeton falls right in between the LE Deluxe and the regular PRRI. As far as tone, I found it to also be in between the two amps, but perhaps closer to the LE Deluxe (they do share the same Jensen P12Q). Bottom line is if you want the classic Fender blackface clean sound for home playing, but the ability to jam with a drummer or for small gigs, this is a fantastic choice. It also looks amazing, if you care about that!

Update to my previous review

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

I loved my Princeton in wine red, but it was short lived. Two nights ago while practicing (low volume) it just fizzed out, popped, and the volume dropped to almost inaudible. Tried a different guitar, same thing. Turned it off and heard a loud POP. After a few hours turned it back but got nothing but fizz, turned it off and got another loud POP. Took it back to GC and they quickly refunded my money, and I took home a new Blues Deluxe in Smokey Tweed, hoping it will fare better. I am giving it 3 stars to be impartial; infant mortality can strike any amp. It was probably just a tube and replacing them could have fixed the issue, but the experience just soured me on this amp.

This special edition Bordeaux is a great looking amp. However, looks aren't everything. Thank goodness it doesn't stop there. It is about the attitude. The 12" Jensen speaker really gives a great well rounded sound. My Tele sings. The Strat struts. Pedals are welcome here. I am just upset that I waited this long for a Princeton. Maybe I waited just long enough for the special edition Bordeaux with the 12" speaker. If you get a chance definitely try this one out. Warning: If you try it be sure and bring your check book because you will want one.

Great Amp, Great Tone and Easy to Transport!

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

This amp might not be for everyone but it's perfect for me and here's why. I've been using a Fender Delux Reverb not for many years. It's a great amp and I still love it a lot! I'm getting older as we all are and I still want a great sounding amp but one that's lighter and this amp fits the bill. I've had it on three gigs so far. A small club, a large club and an outdoor festival. I like to dial in a good clean tone at a volume that I can hear it on stage and then I mic it to the front of the house speakers. I overdrive the amp with my effect pedals. When used this way it works well. I've noticed a better low end frequency response "a warmth" that was missing when I used one of my two 10 inch speaker amps. The 12 inch speaker is the way to go for my live sound. I also own a 70's Princeton with a 10 inch speaker, which is also a good amp but I limit that amp to use in the studio. Really the only difference between the Delux Reverb which is 22 watts verses the Princton Reverb, with the 12 inch speaker and 15 watts is, I put the volume up one notch higher on the Princeton than I have on the Delux.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

It took me about 4 minutes with this amp to fall in love with everything about it. I have a first generation, (USA made), Blues Jr. that I have been extremely happy with since 1999 and was not really in the market for anything but when I read the description of this special edition I felt I had to give it a try. Not really an effects guy to begin with......I am now going to put my pedalboard away completely until it is time to record and a certain effect may be needed. This amp just sounds so good that I want to completely get all my tone from touch and basic settings. The tremolo is so rich and warm that it would seem that you would be lacking something after switching it off but this is not the case.........still sounds just as rich. One of the best purchases I have ever made.

I used it with several guitars. When I use it with a Gibson ES-345 even with bass set low the whole thing rattles and makes awful noise. Not the quality I expected with the reviews I read. Too bad I found issues too late to return it.Look for something else or make sure you test play it in a louder setup to make sure it does not have any issues.

Princetons always sound great! This special edition with the 12" jensen makes it even better. There is a "magic" to this amp that you can't explain or describe. The youtube reviews don't capture the depth of sound this amp has. The reverb is so good, from mild, ambiance to over the top surf; the tremolo is even more impressive than the reverb. This amp is a keeper, in fact, it just booted out my magnatone.

I bought this on a chance, truly expecting to return it for something larger such as a Deluxe. I loved the sound immediately when I first turned it on and A/B'd it with a normal Princeton Reverb RI that my buddy owned, and this simply was leagues better. Shortly after playing it himself, my friend said he was going to mod his Princeton to a 12" speaker.

Eureka! I have Found my Sound!

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

I have finally found what I've been seeking in a compact, low power amp. I will keep this baby for the rest of my days. Sparkling stellar Blackface cleans and takes pedals very well. Add a MXR analog delay for perfect ambiance. A Rocket Pedal 'Blue-Note' through this amp delivered via a Stratocaster neck or neck/mid pickup will give you all the SRV you can handle. Use a Boss 'BluesDriver' to get Billy Gibbons. Although this is a Fender amp, when paired with my Gibson 335, especially when coil splitting the neck pick-up, it is Holy Matrimony! Fender has created a true Masterpiece. For the folks that say this amp isn't loud enough I can only respond that this amp is designed more for sound quality, i.e recording, rather than blasting ear drums. If you want this, or any other low output amp to blast a hall, then simply run a PA.

This is my first nice tube amp and it is exclusively for home use in my living room. It was my present to myself for sticking with my lessons and not giving up. It has that wonderful Princeton tone to die for, and it looks killer, but it is not as loud as I expected. Notice that I only play at home so I am not expecting auditorium sized sound, but the max volume before breakup does not seem very loud to me even for home. Perhaps it will move as the speaker gets broken in, I hope so. Still it is a very nice amp that sounds wonderful and looks just as good, and is Amercan made.

I don't know how to express just how much I like this amp. I've been playing 20 years and have had several fender, marshall, mesa and soldano tube amps and have never been this satisfied. This Princeton limited edition literally makes me want to cry, it is so perfect.

The clean sound is incredibly smooth and creamy. The tone is warm but not dark. The 12" speaker gives you more mids and more control over the bass and has no hint of boxiness. Sound dispersion is wonderful on and off axis. Plenty of headroom but you can get some breakup without making your ears bleed. The vibrato, spring reverb and footswitch are superb. The amp is dead silent which is great for low volume jamming in a quiet room.

The red tolex and tan weave really set it apart although I'd be just as happy with the regular black and silver. At 34 lbs, the weight is easily managed. The only knock I have on the amp is the metal feet - I know it is more vintage to have them but I would prefer nice rubber feet so that my floors don't get marked up.

Life is too short to play on a bad amp, so do yourself a favor and buy this one while you can!

Excellent Reverb and tremolo. This is a very handsome amplifier. I chose it over another one in lacquered tweed and i couldn't be any happier.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Bordeaux Reserve:

I use this amp for home use and recording primarily. Had to rebias the tubes when I got it new. Had to install a 1" screw for the top speaker mounting hole to the baffle. The speaker baffle rattles horribly at volumes above 4.5. Once the extra screw was installed, the rattling when away--can't believe Fender has never addressed this issue.

With proper tube bias (less than 23mA for the groove tubes shipped with my amp) and the baffle rattle problem resolved, this is an outstanding amp that exemplifies the Leo Fender (Fender Electric Instrument) golden era tone. Superb tone, picking dynamics, and very easy to dial in good tone. Have not tried it yet with a Stratocaster, but really great with a Les Paul standard. The Jensen P12N alnico speaker is superb in this amp--let it break in and keep it. No need to swap this speaker out in my opinion.
