    Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwound Strings

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

I'm really liking these strings! I put a set of these on my Carvin PB4 Bass with the P&J style pickups and I can get any sound I want out of them. Slapping even sounds pretty good. I can dial in everything from a vintage flatwound tone to a modern bright tone. Ernie Ball did a great job with these! Also, the silky smooth feel is great. I've been using them for over 2 months now. I keep them clean with my micro fiber cloth and they still sound and feel like the day I put them on my bass!

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

I'm a gigging bassist who usually prefers roundwounds. I have them on all of my basses, including a 4-string fretless. We rehearse at 3 or more times a week, and I practice about 2 hours a day on technique and music theory/improvisation. As would be expected, at some point my fingers shout "STOP!" I recently strung these on my J-bass (which is my go-to baby) and I have to tell you that there is NO appreciable difference--other than price LOL!--between the sound of these and well-known roundwounds. In fact, I replaced a set of nice Rotosound 66's--my favorite for roundwounds--with these and, shut the front door Beethoven, I actually PREFER this sound of these Slinky flatwounds. FWIW I asked our lead guitarist/band leader how he liked the sound of the bass: he said of course, he always did. I told him I restrung with Slinky flatwounds and he said they sounded great--like always. There ya go, roundwound snobs (of whom I was one).

      Sharp and Smooth

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

For reference, I've most recently been using Chromes and Black Beauties.

These Cobalt flatwounds have the sharpest tone among these three sorts of strings, and if memory serves (as I have not use in a very long time) these at least as bright as ProSteels, perhaps even more so.

I've not had any problem producing usable slap tones from any of these three, but the Cobalts are easily the sharpest of the bunch.

The Cobalts are as flexible as any of the lighter half of bass strings that I've tried, so normal techniques present no challenges.

The Cobalts are not quite as smooth to the touch as I had hoped. The edges of the ribbon have a bit more of a grip to them than I'd like. However, they feel almost identical in that regard to some Ernie Ball Series flatwounds that I also have used in the past (which, had no advantages sonically, so were not worth the discomfort).

My favorite flats are an old set of Fenders. They have a very mellow sound wasn't always as satisfying as their feel, so I had moved to Chromes primarily, which didn't feel quite as good, but had a much larger potential sound. Then I tried the Black Beauties, hoping to get the round wound aggressive tone in a package that played nicely with my fingers and found a bit less comfort and a bit more tone, pretty much an even trade off.

These Cobalts, though, feel closer to the Chromes than the Black Beauties, but win on tone, hands down. They are clearly the best bass strings I've ever owned and I am completely satisfied with them.

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

Perfect for those that keep their instruments in a hard case or monitored environment when not in use, or for those that don't mind replacing strings often. I only play maybe 3-5 hours a week and although these things sound pretty great and are easy on my fingers, I don't understand why they seem to rust quicker than any other strings. I have multiple instruments that I leave out on stands and nothing else has this issue. Switched to these from Elixirs and might have to switch back. Never had this issue with them.

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

I have been playing bass for years and was looking for something bright as round wounds but easy on my hands like nylon wound. I found it a couple of years ago with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats and could not be happier! I can play it with rock, metal, jazz, funk, slap. Ernie Ball Cobalts are the real deal! They are the best strings I have ever played! I have an old beat up 57 P-Bass with a lot of mods. The best mod on it are the Cobalt Flats! Hands down! My preference is with the 95s, but have no complaints with the 100s. Way to go!

Comments about Ernie Ball P02814 Super Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings:

I'm a beginner bass player. Meaning I'm 53 years old and am taking lessons because I've always wanted to play bass guitar. My music instructor had a set of flat wounds on his bass and I inquired about them. He told me a little about them and liked the way they felt and sounded so I went ahead and got me a set. Strung up my Ibanez SR300L (yeah...I'm a lefty) and they sound awesome. No noise or anything from the other strings through my amp. Very quiet. Highly recommended.
