Solid Sitka Spruce Top
Like all Masterbilts, the DR-400MCE features a solid wood top made from solid Sitka spruce. The DR-400MCE has a smooth cutaway for easy upper fret access and both the body and headstock black and white binding. The body and neck are made from solid mahogany and have a natural satin finish. The mahogany neck has an easy-to-play 1960's SlimTaper profile and is glued to the body with a dovetail joint. The Torrefied Composite "Blackwood” fingerboard has a 25.5 in. scale length, bone nut, 20 medium jumbo frets, and a 14 in. radius along with elegant pearloid “dot” inlays. The headstock has the classic Masterbilt asymmetrical profile with a pearloid '30s era Masterbilt logo and vintage "Stickpin" inlay. The cover for the two-way adjustable truss rod has “Masterbilt” in white. The body has an imitation tortoise pickguard, a Torrefied Composite "Blackwood” bridge, and a compensated bone saddle.

eSonic HD preamp system

The Masterbilt DR-400MCE is powered by the superb eSonic HD preamp system and NanoFlex-HD pickup located under the saddle. The eSonic preamp system is recognized as one of the best in the world for amplifying the true acoustic tone of your guitar on any stage without the harshness most acoustic guitar pickups are known for. Designed by Shadow Germany, the eSonic HD preamp’s sensitive controls are mounted in the soundhole for fast access and include Master Volume and Master EQ with center detent. The NanoFlex-HD pick up is powered by a long lasting 9-volt battery. The battery compartment is located next to the nickel 1/4” output jack for easy changing.

Solid Hardware
All of Epiphone’s Masterbilt acoustic guitars come with solid and reliable hardware. The DR-400MCE include Epiphone Vintage Premium Open-Back machine heads with a pro 18:1 tuning ratio plus a nickel 1/4 in. output jack and nickel strap buttons. Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt DR-400MCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have some really nice acoustics, and bought this one to use for gig situations where using a mic is not practical (I don't like to put pickups in really nice acoustic guitars). There were some D'angelicos and Yamahas in the store that I also tried, but the pickup in this one sounded the best by far, so I bought it. It is as good an under-saddle peizo tone as you'll get on any guitar. Really sounds great through my trusty paracoustic DI into the board. We'll see about reliability over the long-haul (I've only had it for about a month), but I've done a couple gigs with it already and it has performed admirably with no issues. Acoustically, it sounds fine. Truthfully, it doesn't hold a candle to my Eastman E10D or my Champlin Workhorse (hand-crafted by a local luthier), but that isn't a fair comparison in either case. Having said all that, it sounds "decent to good" and I look forward to hearing it open up over time. I would be satisfied if this were my only acoustic, but don't think you'll be getting the sonic equal of a much more expensive guitar. If you need an affordable acoustic-electric that is solidly built and sounds great plugged in, you'll have a tough time doing better in this price range, in my opinion. I gave four stars because as mentioned, the long term reliability is still an open question. If that weren't a factor, I'd give it five (it is excellent for what I use it for).

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt DR-400MCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have a DR500 MCE and I tried to talk her into one of those but she preferred the thinner neck on the DR400. She is 13 but as tall as some grown women and has long fingers but still prefers the slimmer neck. Tuners are the same as the DR500 even though the description seems different. Finish and build quality is very close to the 500 but the 500 is slightly better. The 400 sounds slightly less rich than the 500 I have but that's always going to vary from guitar to guitar and with different strings and playing time so it's difficult to say that definitively as a rule. Her 400 was the best sounding and the best quality of 3 that I tried. The only complaint I have is the high E is too close to the edge of the frets. The nut could have moved over 1mm or so. Oh well, it's not affecting playability. Oh, and the "baked Blackwood" on them is gross. USE ROSEWOOD guys!! Rosewood comes on $80 guitars so don't tell me it costs too much! The fingerboard on ours might actually be rosewood. It looks like it. The other two had a monochrome Brown fingerboard with cracks in them. A great way to turn someone off to an otherwise excellent value and fine guitar! Built in Indonesia, some people online say the Indonesian ones are superior to the Chinese ones that came befor them. At any rate, we love the DR400 we got and will keep it indefinitely. I'd buy another one. I'm actually considering it right now! Lol!

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt DR-400MCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The build quality on this guitar is outstanding. As expected, it sounded a little dull right out of the box, but it's finding it's voice quickly. The neck is almost identical to my Gibson Les Paul, so I can move from one to the other almost flawlessly at gigs. I love this guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt DR-400MCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I pre-ordered this guitar shortly after the Christmas Holidays. It seemed like a great buy for a Masterbilt all solid wood guitar with a quality sound system installed too. It took a while to arrive but that was not an issue for me. When it arrived it was in perfect condition. I was pleasantly surprised that this guitar arrived setup to play. The action on it was perfect. I usually have to adjust them. I am impressed with the sound quality from this instrument both unplugged and plugged in. The playability is very good. It feels good in my hands. I am very pleased with this guitar. I would highly recommend it. This one is a keeper. Great value.

I ordered this a while ago and it arrived today. It arrived in perfect condition and tuned it up in a couples of minutes. The action was darn near perfect out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised. Kudo's to Epiphone.
The sound is great both unplugged and plugged in. Love the way this guitar is setup. I am very pleased with this Masterbuilt Epiphone. This is an all solid wood guitar for a very reasonable price. Well worth the wait and investment. This is one you need to check out if on a budget and want the most bang for your buck.
