What they said and...

By JONATHAN

from MA

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

Let me say upfront that what the others have said sums it up really. Great guitar at very reasonable price. But I would add my own experience for what it's worth. I am a "mature" beginner and know very little of the correct terminology for the nuances of tone and playability on guitars so bear with me if I don't use the correct jargon. Firstly, I gave it 4 stars because I did have a few issues with the build quality. The pickups were not at the correct heights, the action was higher than it needed to be, some of the knobs are a bit off kilter, a couple of the fret ends are a bit sharp and the jack socket was loose when I got the guitar. Of course all of these issues are easily dealt with and at the price they are of little consequence. I find the high gloss back to the neck a little "sticky" for moving my hand up and down but since I'm not a high speed "shredder" this is a minor detail. But the main reason for my review is the tonal potential with this guitar. When I bought it as an attempt to regain my non-misspent youth, a foil to my midlife crisis, it was somewhat impulsive so I did not try it through an amp and just picked out a low price one to go with it; a Fender Champ 100. When I got them home I discovered the amp was WAY too loud for my purposes, yeah you thought that anyway, right? But worse, I found I couldn't get the kind of tone out of it I was expecting. It sounded brittle and bland (although LOUD). After six months experimenting with settings on the amp, effects pedals and playing technique I had just about given up on getting a close approximation of the sound I had been looking for... then I swapped my Fender Champ for a Marshall DSL40c...WOW! It became the guitar I had dreamed of! The tone was "rich", the difference between pickup settings (including coil split which didn't seem to do much before) gave a full spectrum of options, and subtle differences of playing technique came right back at you out of the speaker. It was a revelation! What a magic instrument! And I haven't even tried my pedals with them yet, this is just amp and guitar! They are like a symbiotic musical organism working together to produce sounds and tones that have played in my head all my life; and all yours for less than $1000! So the point of this review is not meant as a critique of the amp, that belongs elsewhere and will be done after I have lived with the thing for a while. Nor do I mean to put down the Fender Champ, when I traded it in the guy in the Guitar Center checked it out by playing a Fender guitar through it and that sounded GREAT. I am writing this to say if you choose to buy this guitar, and I highly recommend it, try it through the amp you plan to use and if possible make sure you pick a tube amp, not necessarily the Marshall as there are other options for under $1000 that I'm sure would do the SG justice too.

Best guitar I've ever owned

By Justin

from Waterford, CT

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

If I could give this thing 20 stars I would! I've had mine for almost twenty years and played countless shows with it. It survived me being a teenager in punk and hardcore bands and eventually it succumbed to the abuse but not after many, many long shows and years of awesome sound. I would buy another one in a heartbeat without question. It is neck heavy but it's an SG, what do you want! Killer sustain, tons of bottom end for heavier stuff but versatile enough to play reggae as well. It was my go-to guitar. The only fault I ever found in this guitar was that the plastic piece on the toggle switch was brittle and cracked. I replaced it with a gibson piece and never had another issue with it. If you're thinking about buying this and don't want to sound like a strat or a tele do yourself a favor and... BUY THIS GUITAR!

Awesome and amazingly versatile axe

By Brian Freeland

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

Bought this recently ,but been playing the heck out of it, its my new main guitar, others I'm used to playing on are PRS santana SE and ESP ltd-300, this one beats them both in my opinion, simply because of the coil-tapping technology the pickups are equipped with, just pull on the volume control and it clicks up and down,...you can get a wide variety of tones...can make it sound as bright and twangy as a telecaster with both knobs pulled out and select the neck pickup, switch to the bridge it sounds like a strat, etc. Humbuckers it's got provide amazing sustain,Great on distortion channel, and on clean channel is where you can really appreciate its coil tapping pickups because you can truly get a beautiful strat tone out of this guitar, its great for rock, metal, blues, jazz, really verstatile.the action is fantastic all up and down the fretboard, intonation is good, stays in tune, and Looks are amazing as well, everyone who sees it comments or compliments it,

I Love This Guitar

By DONALD MARLEY

from Gilroy, California

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

Wow! Incredible sustain, light weight but with great balance (due to the lighter Wilkinson tuning machines), great pickups (and especially versitile with coil taps), great all-fret access (with double cut-aways and set neck which is trimmer than bolts), perfect setup right out of the box (all I had to do was tweak the tuning a bit), and unlike most electrics it even sounds pretty good without plugging it in. Perfect? ... well almost. The one problem I had was that the sustain is so good that the harmonics in strings 5 and 6 ring when resonant notes in the other strings are played. This isn't a problem when playing 6-string chords or when playing strings 5 and 6, but playing a melody on strings 1 - 4 causes ringing in the open strings 5 and 6 unless they are muted. This can be done (with some practice) with your right thumb if you fingerpick, but is more difficult if you use a pick. The left thumb can damp string 6, but this can be cumbersome. ONE SOLUTION: What has worked for me so far is to take a rubber band (not a thin one), cut it open, wrap it once around string 6, pull it through to string 5 and again wrap once, then pull it further until the lengths are equal on each end. Pull the string 5 end over the top of the nut at string 4 and pull the string 6 end around the back of the neck. Tie the ends together behind the neck so that there is enough tension in the rubber band to dampen the harmonics in strings 5 and 6. If the loops around the strings are positioned too close to the nut then the harminics won't be damped. If the rubber band is too thick or too tight then the damping is too severe. If the loops are too near to fret # 1 then the rubber band gets in the way of playing note F on string 6 and B-flat/A# on string 5. About 1/2-way to fret #1 works perfect for me. Damping works when the string is open, but the string plays normally when fretted on any fret. When picking the open damped string I can hear the damping effect when the guitar is not plugged in, but when the sound is generated electrically by the pickups the tone of the damped open string still sounds good. The extended ringing of the harminics (beyond when the primary frequency fades out) is reduced enough to no longer bother me. Now it plays and sounds great. BTW, the cherry finish looks famtastic and plays well on the neck. [This review is for the Epiphone G-400 SG PRO (set neck) model.]

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

First off, YES you can sound like Angus Young from AC/DC when you power up this guitar (just fiddle with the controls on your amp of choice, low drive, high treble, mess around till' you get it).

This guitar caught my eye two years ago when I decided I wanted to expand on my playing abilities and try something new. I waited until the time was right to go ahead and order it online (great delivery time, only 3 days excluding the weekend). When It arrived, I was beside myself. The color is beautiful to look at, the neck does take a little getting used to, but works great once you get the feel for it, the electronics are simply sublime (some people have commented saying that the pickups are "weak" or "flat", they work more than enough for me!). The coil-tapping adds some nice room to create tones with, giving it a Stratocaster sound when you have a lot of highs and mids. Overall, this guitar would suffice even if I was doing an arena sized concert, it's tone, style, and playability have little to no bounds when it comes to playing rock of any kind!

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for about 35 years. The first guitar that I actually owned was a 1985 LP Studio Custom. Great guitar. Before that I played my Dad's old 50's Martin 3/4 acoustic and a 50's Ovation(?) acoustic. Well, I have been through a few since then, Westone Dimension IV, an Ovation, which I had to give up. I still have a 1995 Squire Strat(GREAT Tone!), and a 1995 Epi LP standard with 4 pull up pots that control phasing and coil split, etc. Amazing axe, such great sustain and control.
This SG plays more easily than all of them, though. Simply said, out of the box... I had nothing to change. Just tuning. Coil split is a nice to have when you want a more "Strat'y," tone and the Alinco pickups are really nice. Currently my goto for most songs, but still use the Strat for the JH and SRV stuff.
Can't believe it is so inexpensive!!!

Buy it, you won't regret it!!!

This guitar is a beautiful instrument. From the glossy finish to the vintage style tuners and classic pro pickups. It's not as neck heavy as some would lead you to believe, and it is actually quite lightweight if you ask me. The coil tapping is quite useful and it sounds beautiful playing any style of music. Superb on clean and quite honestly it sounds good not even plugged in. I can't suggest this guitar enough. If you can't spend the big bucks on a Gibson but don't want to buy a low end guitar either then save up and buy this cause it's worth it.

Comments about Epiphone G-400 PRO Electric Guitar:

I love it! Great value for what you get. All the right pieces. As soon as I got it I set the action (minor tweak) the truss rod was already dead on. I've been a life long Strat player but wanted something crunchier sound wise. The G-400 is a nice addition to my collection. I owned a 70's SG and have to say they are fairly hard to tell apart for sound. I find myself picking it up more than the Strats I have.

The set from the factory seems well done intonation is almost spot on.
Would have given 5 stars but for the bridge pickup is in the way when picking high e string looks as though you just have to not play that close to the bridge other wise just love this thing!

This guitar fits almost all applications!! Great sound, excellent sustain on mine!! The setup was frightful but between a guitar tech and myself got it dead on. The coil tap option is really nice, a true addition to the guitar!! The pickups are near identical to the 57's in output and tone. The action is really low and very fast!! I have been playing quite a number of years and can honestly say that You can't beat it for the investment!!

A lot of guitar for the money.

Fret access on this instrument is mind blowing. Its light as a feather. Coil tapping gives you tele-like tones when you want em. There are no good demonstrations of this guitar on youtube; you'll have to actually get your hands on one to see what youre missing out on. And have you seen the price? Shew-ee-howdy-shucks!

I bought this guitar because I've always wanted an SG. I didn't want to spend the money for the Gibson. The finish is great and after a professional setup plays great.

I was looking for some thing different and I found it with bad boy it's easy to reach the frets and it fun to play and it was the first one I picked up off the wall played it for about 30 minutes and had to have it it honestly is the best gutair for beginners and for experts it's light weight I don't notice that the neck is heavy at all if ur looking at this gutair I say buy it for sure

Just got this guitar, and it's hard to put down (in any way)! The Alnico Classic Pro pickups are hot(!), the neck and action are both great, just had to adjust the bridge a bit to get it to how I like it. Can't go wrong with this guitar!!
