Overview

Extending the ZXA1’s size-defying performance and sleek styling into the low-end realm, the ZXA1-Sub packs a 700-watt punch into a small, low-profile wood enclosure. Match this powered subwoofer with a pair of ZXA1s or other smaller powered speakers and hear just how big a small rig can sound. Weighing in at a mere 46 lb., the ZXA1-Sub won’t break your back during transport and it easily fits into tight spaces. Whether you’re a DJ looking to add a deep thump to your set or you’re a live performer wanting to give the highs and mids some breathing room, this subwoofer has you covered.

Take the stereo XLR outputs from your mixer and plug into the stereo XLR inputs of the ZXA1-Sub, then patch the stereo outputs into a pair of powered main speakers. The ZXA1-Sub is equipped with a 100Hz high-pass filter that keeps everything below 100Hz in the sub so your main speakers' power amp doesn't have to process the low end. Low frequencies are the most taxing aspect of any signal for a power amp, so not only will you get a perfectly tuned low end, your main speakers will operate with much greater efficiency.

Powerful and portable

By Francisco Medina

from La Mesa, CA

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

I'm a mobile dj and wanted a powered sub to compliment my PA system which includes a Mackie FXPRO8 and two Mackie Thumps 15TH-A, I was looking for power and portability. Something that was going to sound good of course and something I was going to be able to haul around with ease. Now don't be fooled, please don't be fooled just because you read this is a 12' and not a 15 or 18...nah that makes no difference with the EV. At the Guitar Center in La Mesa, CA as soon as it got plugged it in, the whole speaker room floor, walls and windows began to rattle and that was only using a cell phone for audio but the sub was also turned all the way up max and the indicator light didn't turn off just stayed one. I thought to myself, how would it actually sound when it's connected to the rest of your PA system...ummmm. I went around and started to lift the other subs I was considering to purchase and they were helluv heavy I wasn't going to be able to get any of those on to my truck by myself (maybe I would be able to if I wanted to blow my back out or get herniated) I would need a second person or a ramp and sometimes that second can't always make it to help, what about moving it around late in the evening at the end night when you've had some drinks and have been mixing for 5 to 6 hours straight, nah I wasn't going to able to handle those larger subs properly. I picked this bad boy up and it's about 50-60lbs with nice handles I picked up like nothing, yeah, this is what I'm looking for something powerful and easy to handle. It's 700 watts peak just like some of the other subs I was looking at thought about it and made my decision, I took it home out the door with 2 year warranty and a Livewire cable for $750. I've owned it now close to a month now and have had two gigs outdoor and indoor. Outdoor I set it on top of a cardboard that came inside the box with the original packing, I can sit the sub on it perfectly. You are able to feel the floor shake at a radius lets say around 20-25 feet and we're talking that's outside on grass at a park and only turned on at level 3 on a clock that's like at the 10 o'clock position and the indicator light didn't even go on once and it was bumping. Indoor I set it on top of a squared cut off carpet, I was set on a stage in a midsize room with about 175-200 persons same thing, I didn't have to go pass that 10 o'clock mark to have it bumping. One of the best things about the sub is the stress it takes off the TH15As giving thus extended life in the future in my opinion and thought of actualization. Electro-Voice calls it the worlds most powereful smallest compact sub, yup, you couldn't explain it any other way, it's true. Don't hesitate this sub will make you so proud, it's perfect for small and midsize rooms, outdoor events such as backyard boogies and park events.

My back thanks EV

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

After a weekend of backbreaking stairs and distant parking areas I decided it was a necessity at my age to begin the downsizing of portable PA gear. With a lot of apprehension I sold off my mackie 18" powered subs and bought these as a replacement. I messed with them a bit prior to taking them out to a show and was a little disappointed in the sound and volume in my little studio room. Took them out to a medium size venue last night to help punch up the bottom end and was totally surprised at how well they performed. With a bit of volume and a larger area than I had used at home, these little tykes really worked well and while they are not as punchy as the big Mackies were, I still could hear and feel enough bottom end to work the room. Even at the end of the night when just for fun I wanted to really put these through the ringer by cranking up the kick and bass guitar, I was pleased with the sound even at this volume. Bottom line....while these are certainly not the sound of the big boys, for a nice sub in a smaller venue, these are ideal. A great value, and no problems moving these with ease. Much better than lugging big subs. Next gig I will experiment with stacking these. Probably not the best choice for bass heavy rap or house music unless you get about 20 of these ??

THIS SUB ROCKS

By John Alexander

from New Orleans

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

I have used several small PA systems in the past, but they were always lacking in bass response. I recently purchased a JBL 210p portable system and attached this sub on the monitor output in an attempt to create an ultraportable system with full range response. Wow! The sound quality and volume of this combination is incredible and the whole thing combined only weighs 80 pounds! Have Guitar Center configure a JBL 210p with the ZXA1 Sub attached to the monitor output, set the monitor output to 7, set the sub output to 7-8 on the subs back panel, attach an iPod or iPhone with bass reduction eq setting on and you will not believe the quality sound you hear! Set this way, the system shifts much of the bass from the mains to the sub and really allows the system to reach very high sound volumes. With the sub attached, this ultraportable system could replace a system weighing twice as much and taking up a lot more space. The ZXA1 Sub sounds great and puts out high quality base at much higher sound levels than I ever expected out of a 12" driver. I like its output quality and level better than a much heavier 15" sub I have. Must hear to believe.

Good things in small packages? Definitely!

By John

Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

I read reviews here and on other sites about this little guy and I was skeptical right up until I started rattling the walls. This sub delivers. On top of great performance the weight and it's compact size are excellent. I do mobile DJ'ing and karaoke gigs and I have limited space to carry everything I need. This fit the bill wonderfully. Plus the "One Handed" carrying..? Yep. I did just that. I was able to lug it in and out of the gig with no problem at all. The only complaint I have is that if you put the sub on the floor and put a high speaker on a pole in the sub, due to it's size, the standard speaker pole may put the high at the wrong height for your crowd. Best to put your highs on speaker stands and stash the sub somewhere out of the way or out of sight. Thanks Brian S. Redd for this recommendation!! Justin at GC in Bartlett, TN took great care of me when I called to place my order and they got it in within 2 days of me placing my order. This is why I keep going back to GC.

      Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

After 20+ years carrying vinyl, speakers, turntables, etc, I decided if I want to stay in the Mobile DJ business, I need to downsize without giving up quality. Now that I am a digital DJ, I wanted a Sub that pack a punch and this baby has it. I used a single EV ZXA-1 Subwoofer with my JBL 615M for most of my gigs. I place the sub in and a corner or near a wall and I am still amazed how it fills both small and medium sized rooms. Not overwhelming. What surprised me was when I used the Sub outside, I placed it in the center, and the speakers on the side, you can still feel the bass. Again, not overwhelming, just right. I can fit my entire DJ System with lights, including my Sub and Speakers in my car, not SUV, Van or Truck. My Car! The ZXA-1 Sub is lightweight and I can carry it with one hand.

I made the purchase December 2014; I must say that the service was excellent @ 800# GC, I needed the product fast for a live session were I held the role of drummer and sound guy. So this has been in operation since December and holding down a full band, two keyboardist, DI for bass and up to eight vocalist. I have two ZLX12s running main with in-ear monitors for the band. Engaging the cross overs on the ZLX allows the highs to be clearer and the bass response from the ZXA1 to tightly maintain the core bottom. As mentioned; I can carry this with one hand which makes it rather convenient as the sound tech and drummer.

          from Louisville, KY

          Comments about Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer:

For the Sound, Weight and Price it delivers. With a bad back I've been looking for a lightweight sub that gets the job done and the ZXA1-Sub does a good job of delivering. I've used it in different combinations with my QSC K10, K12 and KW153 speakers and it fills in the bottom nicely in a small to medium size rooms. In large rooms and outdoors they work, but you need four subs to totally kick it. But at the price you can get four for the price of two powered 18s.

I use 4 on the left and 4 on the right with ELX15P's on top. With a Yamaha digital mixer and a Driverack 360 for most live band medium sized venues. I love the tight bass and the ease of setting them up.

I have EV ZLX 15s and added this sub to my set up this past weekend. It thumped and rocked a nice space in a bar with dance floor and lounge space. I used the crossover set up so I plugged my mixer into the sub then the sub to the 15s, balanced very nicely. It was bassy and full like you expect at a bar or club with a house system. I am buying another with the next coupon I get. The added bass definitely gets people dancing and makes you sound like a mobile pro. The 15s also have punch too so it was an overall a nice round tone.

I have a 4 piece band with three and four part harmonies kicking most of the time. These subs do a fine job. I traded in my 18 inch ev subs to down size to the 12 inch ev subs. I thought I would loose bottom end but they actually punch a little harder than the 18's did.

The sub-woofer had exceeded my expectations. It was used for my DJ gig in a park, so I was told that the music sounded AMAZING!!

I would like to see that I get another one (same dimensions, and design) later in the year.

I perform at a trampoline park on the weekends and my EV 12's can usually do the job with no problem. The park switched over to a "glow" theme and needed the music to be turned up for the lights to flash. Because of such a large area, my speakers began to get taxed. I knew that if I added a sub to my setup, that would help my setup greatly. I saw the ZXA-1 and thought that it should get the job done. When I went to the store to pick it up, my heart sank a little as the rep brought out this "cute" box that contained a small sub. Mind you, I did ask for it, but just began to have buyers remorse. Anyway, I went home and plugged it into my setup and gave it a trial run. I pushed it (but not too hard inside), and couldn't hear the difference. I began to wonder what the return policy was, but my wife said "just try it out tomorrow night." The following night, we went to the park, with our new sub in tow and set up like we always do. When they killed the house lights and we turned on, that little box turned into a monster! All of the lights were responding to the bass drops and it seemed like the guests were jumping less and dancing more! At the end of the night, the manager complimented us on a great set. She said that the music sounded incredible. We told her that it was our new sub. Well worth the cost. And the best part? It fits in the back of my 2016 Nissan Versa with the rest of my equipment! Granted, it takes positioning to get it all in, but it fits. Will be purchasing another one soon!

After a weekend of backbreaking stairs and distant parking areas I decided it was a necessity at my age to begin the downsizing of portable PA gear. With a lot of apprehension I sold off my mackie 18"" powered subs and bought these as a replacement.
