Overview

The Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi overdrive and distortiuon pedal is a classic 1960's overdrive based around a hand-selected germanium transistor. To get the best results from the E-H Germanium 4, just set aside some time to practice in a quiet room-just you, your amp, and the Germaium OD. The interaction of each control will reward you with many different flavors of exceptional vintage overdrive.

In addition to a Gain control, the Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 overdrive lets you control Bias for attack and the circuit volts for that sweet spot found when a battery's voltage dips.

The Gain control adjusts the amount of input signal that is fed to the Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4. The more the knob is rotated the harder the germanium transistor and drive components are hit. The Bias control adjusts the current gain that is sent to the Germanium transistor. It works together with the Voltage control to attain the over all tone. The bias control works specifically with the Germanium transistor. The Volts knob controls the amount of voltage that is applied to the Germanium OD. Set at full, 9V is applied. When set at minimum, 3V is applied. By limiting the voltage a number of interesting saturations can be set up for variations in tone.

A footswitch turns true bypass on or off.

The Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 runs off of a 9V battery or you can connect a 9VDC adapter capable of delivering at least 100mA to the 9V power jack. The optional 9V power supply from Electro-Harmonix is 9.6DC-200BI (same as used by Boss and Ibanez) 9.6 Volts DC 200mA. The AC power adapter must have a barrel connector with center negative. The battery may be left in or taken out when using an adapter.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

so far super happy with it, great for that desert rock sound and vintage vibes, definitely more of an effect than a modern gain, but since i play stoner metal it fits me perfect, i have to use it before a TS9 to keep it nice and tight, going into the clean channel of a 6505+, hit it with a octave pedal and stock gibson 500t and its a glorious happening...a strat does make it a little less loose and records a little more focused... i love mine just hope the germaniums last forever

Awesome versatile pedal!!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal a few months ago. It is AWESOME! You can get any thing from just a volume boost the the overdrive side to a harsh fuzz with distortion side and everything in between; Electro-harmonics really hit a solid with this pedal. I would recommended getting a power supply for it though because it will eat a battery very quickly.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The tones you can get out of this pedal, are amazing. The combination of OD, and Distortion gives a killer metal tone, and they both can stand alone and make an impact. However, the main downside is the versatility to this pedal. The DS-1 is famous because of its exceptionally large ranges of tone, not because they are the best. This pedal is designed to sound like a decaying pedal (due to power loss) and the honey spot on a classic overdriven tube amp (think Supro). I am currently switching from a multi-pedal to a pedal board, as the usability of multi-pedals is derelict. I am glad I bought this pedal, however, it has limited range of effects. Well worth the money if this is the tonal style you are looking for.

    Good For Lighter Styles

    By THOMAS BAILEY

    from Wilmington, NC

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

After buying this pedal and playing around with it for a bit I have grown to really like it. You can get some really nice Blues and Reggae tones from it and its great for soft music that doesn't require a lot of distortion. I also like to use it as a booster for other distortion pedals. The only thing that disappoints me is the overdrive. Even when I have it cranked all the way up I still feel like I want more. I can't make it scream like a tube screamer. But with that aside it's a pretty solid pedal but I would recommend trying it out yourself before committing to buying it.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is now a main stay on my board. I push it with a Klone pedal in front of it. The OD gives a very nice sparkle to it, maybe a little dirt if you want for a clean channel, or can really push you dirt channels great. The distortion side has so many options, it can stay nice and crisp, or get the softer hendrix type fuzz. the voltage knob can make the whole thing get naughty in a hurry. love it to death. I run the over drive at near noon for the bias, gain, tone, and volume at 3 to 4.
I run the Distortion side with gain at about 10, bias at 4, voltage at 1/2, volume at 3. the more the voltage goes down, the more it compresses. I have it set so it sounds almost like a distortion/fuzz/octave mixed pedal. sounds amazing on a clean channel, even sweeter on a lightly broken up dirt channel. I have run this through my highly modifies Fender Blues Deluxe (non-reissue) has marshall type power section running Gold Lion KT88's. Also put through my modified 6505 combo(not plus and with reverb in circuit has good clean). and it sounds great with my Rockerverb clean. The dirt on my Rockerverb is the only one that it gets kinda sketchy because I push SO much low end and air with the stack, partial due to running the Vintage 30's. the peavey set up Like an invective cab by peavey, and the Fender uses Celestion cream back heavy magnets.
