A 5-string Bass for Guitarists

By TOBY DIAZ

from Riverside, CA

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

I see myself as a guitarist more than a bassist, though I play and enjoy them both. That being said, this is a wonderful little bass for a guitarist to play, for those days when you feel less like shredding a solo and more like grooving a bassline. This instrument is a capable, simple, inexpensive bass for a guitarist to play comfortably, with a lightweight, compact body, just one pickup, a volume and tone control, and 24 easily accessible frets. Quality obviously isn't as great as a more expensive instrument, but for the price, this bass plays very well, to the point that if I were a better bassist, I might swap the pickup out of this instrument and use it as my primary bass playing in a band. I've owned both the four- and five-string version of this instrument. They both play very well, with the four-string being just a bit lighter than the five, but I personally prefer the five-string, because the low B string allows me to play drop-tuned metal basslines without having to de-tune a four-string instrument. I'd recommend this bass to any guitarist looking for a cheap bass to mess around on, or as a first instrument to a young bassist looking to play heavier genres of music that the 5th string would be useful to have in.

On a quick glance.

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

Just a fore-warning I only spent about 30 minutes with bass in store, nonetheless: It is definitely a fun and little bass. It was surprisingly responsive on the low b, not floppy as I had expected. It is a little awkward looking and not the best quality, but it is decent in general and respectable for the price. I'm not sure I would have the courage to make this a gigging bass because it quite frankly makes me feel like a cartoon giant. But this bass does sound very alright. It's straight forward and sounds fine (through an ampeg SVT and a 4x10) very mellow. I'd recommend this as a good learning bass for a younger one, (4 string model would be my choice) or as something else to mess around with. It's more serious than it looks, but not everyone's MAIN bass.

Just What I Needed

By Scott Smith

from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

I needed an affordable, small scale 5 string for the home studio. Being a guitar player, I like that scale size. Went in looking to test other basses and then saw and tried the ESP. Great feel and balance. Recorded with it that night and it's very warm and responsive. I just love it. I had a coupon so it only cost me $154! Sweet!

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

I haven't had a bass in a while and I bought this to practice. So far it's been a good bass. The frets are all properly placed and it stays in tune. I bought this bass without playing it first and I was definitely worried the quality would be poor, given that it's under $200. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a competent instrument with good sound and playability. There's some buzzing on the low string, but it's not noticeable if you play loud.

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

Bought this LTD and an Ibanez GSR25 Mikro both 28.6" scale because of my Arthritis. and the LTD has a better quality sound and doesn't have the fret buzz that the Ibanez has. This is a very nice little Bass and plays very well with good deep lows I would recommend it to everyone.

Not a problem as far as playability, but...

    • poor string articulation

Comments about ESP LTD B-5JR Short-scale 5-string Bass Guitar:

This particular item has the super short scale length (28.6") which may be good for people with small hands but there is a trade off. The strings (most likely due to the scale length) are not as tight as they would be with a scale length of 34"+ (poor string articulation).

Because of this, the strings (esp. the heavier "E" and "B" strings) will vibrate against the fingerboard if the player plucks too aggressively.

Another concern for some: I have noticed (as with other short scale basses) that tuning is much more sensitive (i.e. you do not have to turn the tuning pegs as much to adjust the tuning). I'm no physicist, but it seems that the tuning sensitivity is proportionate to the scale length.

Would I recommend this item? Maybe, but not without letting the person know about the aforementioned concerns.

I bought this model for my son and he is ecstatic. Goon on ESP for putting out a quality instrument for beginners and a 5 string to boot?
