The Dean Pace 4-String Electric Upright Bass is well built and well priced. Position markers on the side help you keep track of where you are on the neck as you transfer your hard-won chops to the moaning, liberating sound of a fretless upright. I've been playing piano for 63 years and bass for 58. Professionally for 59 years. I played nothing but upright in symphonic, rock, and jazz groups for 30 years then keys for the next 30 or so. I decided to go back to bass about a year ago after seeing someone playing a "stick" bass. On a whim, I bought this bass. Like riding a bike. Just played. I've played it with 10 different bands, 3 music directors, and countless musicians over that year. Every musician, singer, etc (except for one) LOVES this bass. I don't understand the reviews except the "case" comment. It's junk. Bottom line: this bass sounds somewhere between a bass guitar and upright. It's neither so don't expect it to be. It's not intended to be either and it's not. And you can't play it with a bow. Those of you with lousy tone, I'd suggest another amp or more eq tweaking. You NEED a 15" speaker. Also, don't play it like a guitar player plays bass - you all know what I mean - play it like a bass and concentrate on the low end. It's a powerful, great foundation for any group in any venue and style. And the audience invariably gets a kick out of it. Especially when they hear it. I love it and recommend it to anyone. Great sound and playability. Break a leg.

It had been a while since I had played an upright. I did not want to spend too much. I didn't. It doesn't cost much, the quality is lacking, as is the tone. It does not sound like an acoustic upright bass. I have tried different strings with only minor success. It has good action however, and it has given me the desire and ability to go out and purchase a better bass.

Pace Bass Case Waste
By Tom Towle
from Montecito, CA
Comments about Dean Pace Bass 4-String Electric Upright:
The Dean Pace Upright Bass had a couple problems. The zipper on the "el cheapo" case broke off the same day. The volume pot is sticking at the high end and the stand configuration does not seem to accommodate for a shorter player in that I can not seem to lower it to a comfortable height. I am playing it through a Boss Bass Equalizer pedal with the graphic EQ sliders set tapered diagonally from minimum treble to maximum bass...still, I am not hearing the acoustic semblance I would love. It may be worth the money IF and only IF you are using it for the SPECIFIC reasons of (a) preparing for acoustic OR (b) convenience of portable and cheap.

Not bad...

Comments about Dean Pace Bass 4-String Electric Upright:
Been playing bass for over 15 years but this is my first upright. The playability is great and the tone is ok (a bit too much trebel for my taste) but with some nob tweaking on my amp I managed to make it sound good. I would say it's a good purchase for the electric players out there who are curious and want to play upright without breaking the bank but for the guys who play the real deal I wouldn't recommend this instrument as it doesn't have that thump or is not as warm as a real wood bass.

Not the best, but a fine inexpensive alternative.

Comments about Dean Pace Bass 4-String Electric Upright:
First, let me explain, I've been a musician for 30 years and a bass player for 25 but my main work is not as a musician. I needed an upright bass to use in a festival. I knew I will use it for around 2 hours and I may not use it again, but I thought it will be a good add on to my studio, so instead of borrowing one, I decided to buy it. This bass, has a couple of design flaws. First, it has only one volume control and nothing else. The sound has too much treble for my taste, but I was able to correct that with the preamps. As a regular upright bass player (the big fat bass, I mean), I tried a couple of tricks to see how this bass responds and I must say it is very acceptable for a unit at this price. Still it lacks the sound of a real upright bass, but as I said before, I tricked it with the preamps and it sounds good. At the festival, the sound people gave me a Gallien Krueger head and speakers. I had to tweak the knobs, and after several tries, I got it to sound pretty much like the real thing. Bottom line, it is a good bass for starters or people who wants to start diving into the upright world. If you are a professional, you may want to explore other more expensive options

In order to get a good tone use a preamp and roll off some treble and boost bass. I recommend the Behringer Bass preamp. Why spend more?

I have owned this bass for 5 years. It transports easily, sets up quickly and has in my opinion a great sound.
Opening the preamp compartment and adjusting the onboard EQ takes a little time. But it's worth it.
Keeping in mind(to the naysayers)the bass IS electric ! Expecting a bass sound exactly like a bass
fiddle is not in keeping with the laws of acoustics. You may find a little satisfaction however by experimenting with a Boss AC-3 acoustic simulator pedal with a slight bit of reverb added. I saw a video of Jack Bruce with a highly scooped mid EQ for his fretless while doing the Cream reunion.Remeber friends
experiment!!!!You may surprise yourselves
