Dean

Description

Dean knew that the Colt would be an in-demand electric guitar, and a quick look at the specs shows why. This maple body is loaded with DMT designed pickups, plus a piezo to capture the semi-hollow’s acoustic tone. The maple theme continues with the neck, which sports an ebony fretboard. A Bigsby bridge puts the Colt into serious rockabilly and Travis picking mode, offering warmth with real rock and roll flair. With endless electronic options, the Dean Colt semi-hollowbody guitar with Bigsby & piezo  gallops ahead of any herd.

So far I've used this guitar on 10 4 hour shifts in Nashville on Broadway, and these are the only gripes I have thus far. 1. I wish the toggle switch for the piezo had a switch tip on it. It's a little sharp on the corners and I've nearly cut myself a couple times on it. 2. The pickup switch on mine was dirty when it was delivered and I needed to spray some deoxit in it on day 2. 3. The strap button is positioned in a great spot for balance, not a great spot for getting higher up the neck when using a thick strap. It just kinda gets in the way. 4. It does come with a bigsby, which is super sexy. But it also comes with Bigsby issues. The greatest thing you can do for yourself is order a vibramate string spoiler, and some nut lubricant. I use pencil graphite, but you can use big Ben's nut sauce, chap stick, or whatever you like. After those two little tweaks, she stays in tune like a dream! Now that I've gotten my few nitpicky problems out of the way, here's the things I like. 1. The neck feels fantastic. It feels pretty similar to my Epiphone 335 neck. Not too chunky, not too thin. Just a nice medium C shape. 2. The tone is like a cross between a Les Paul and a Gretsch. Nice and thick with plenty of woodiness. Rolling off the volume to around 7 gives you a fat jazz tone. A treble bleed would be a nice addition if you're not into that. 3. It has a piezo. Which is super nice to have, even if you don't use it all the time. I've run it through my hx stomp xl with some eq and compression and gotten some really good "acoustic" tones. Definitely helpful for gigs where you have a hard time with feedback on your acoustics. 4. It's semi hollow, so there is some feedback. But, by the time I got through my first gig, I had figured out the angles to get different types of feedback and how to control it with my rig. 5. It's absolutely gorgeous! I've had a ton of compliments, and it fits my 6'4 300 lb frame really well compared to my silver sky or tele. My band plays a little bit of everything. So far I've played everything from Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Alan Jackson to Metallica, The Verve, and RATM with this guitar, and it's handled it all with ease. Minimal tuning issues, and other than the dirty switch, no issues. If you have a love of Dean guitars like I do, and want something for all your rock/blues/jazz/country needs, this guitar is fantastic!
