Dave Smith Instruments unleashes the Prophet 12 Synthesizer. Using 35 years of experience building synths, Dave Smith has created what he calls his "best synth yet." By combining the finest qualities of the Prophet '08 and Poly Evolver keyboards, adding a ton of new features, and bumping up the voice-count to 12, the Prophet 12 is well worthy of the name. As with all Dave Smith keyboards, the Prophet 12 has a knob-per-function interface that lets you start designing sounds immediately without having to dive through pages of confusing menus.

At twelve voices, the Prophet 12 boasts the greatest polyphony of any instrument designed by Smith. Each voice features four oscillators capable of generating classic and complex waveforms, a sub-oscillator, resonant analog low- and high-pass filters, and analog VCAs. The new Character section adds a variety of wave shaping and sound sculpting options, like Drive, Hack, Decimation, Girth, and Air. Additional features include a tuned feedback path, a four-tap stereo delay per voice, expanded arpeggiator functionality, deep modulation capabilities, and bi-timbral operation. The LFOs, delay, and arpeggiator can all be synced, either to the internal clock or an external MIDI clock. Two programmable position- and pressure-sensitive touch sliders take the performance controls beyond the standard pitch and mod wheels (also included).

  • Designed from 35 years of master synth buliding
  • Twelve voices, highest polyphony of any instrument designed by Dave Smith
  • Knob-per-function interface makes sound design easy, no need to dig through menus
  • 4 Oscillators and a sub-oscilaatos per voice
  • Unique character section helps shape sound
  • Analog low-pass and high-pass filters
  • Tuned feedback and quad multi-mode delay per voice
  • Dual position and pressure sensitive sliders, same ones found on the Tempest
  • Dual-stereo analog distortion helps trash-up signals as desired

A strong "VA" with an analog tail that can make some very good sounds. j

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12 Polyphonic Synthesizer:

p12 is a good sounding "mega" synth - 4 "va" oscillators coupled with an analog backend (filter, etc.). it has the variety of sound you'd expect from an upmarket VA/analog synth with and excellent control interface, a decent screen for viewing parameters, and reasonable I/O. currently, I say it's competing against the Radikal Acellarator, John Bowen Solaris, and other up market entirely virtual synths, our of the three, the Solaris is also a 4 oscillator unit, but with better overall sound quality. the prophet 12 is essentially the upper extension of everything dave Smith has made since the prophet 08. sub oscillators are available, additional sound manipulation tools are available (decimation, hack, etc), and effects. You lose the sequencer based material from the prophet 08. it definitely is the top end of DSI's offering, and does things few synths do - it's a solid 4 star piece - it's worth the money if you love synths, however, it isn't the only place to go for outstanding synth sounds these days in a 61key hardware box,

Prophet-12 versus Prophet-6

  • Rich and warm even with digital oscillators

    Best Uses

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12 Polyphonic Synthesizer:

Purchased my first Prophet-12 when they came out. What a great keyboard. When the P-6 was announced, I sold the P-12 and got in line for a P-6. When the P-6 arrived, I missed my P-12 for a number of reasons so I bought another one. My local Guitar Center handled everything. Two days later, it arrived at the store for pick-up. No fuss, no muss, no waiting at home to sign for it.
So, here's the deal. The P-6 is an amazing keyboard as well. It is warmer sounding than the P-12 but only having 49 keys, it lacks the playability of the P-12 unless you enjoy playing with one hand or running out of keys while playing with two. As we know, the original P-5 had 61 keys. I would rate the P-6 as sounding like the 2nd and 3rd versions of the P-5 which, again, is very warm and full sounding. What I cannot understand are reviews that state that the P-12 is thin sounding. Perhaps a bit digital in relation to the P-6 but definitely not thin. Some of these people either do not actually own it or have not spent much time programming it. First, the P-12 has 4 digital oscillators per voice X 12 for a total of 48 oscillators. after that, it is an analog signal path. The P-6, although analog, has only 2 oscillators per voice X 6, so you are not going to have the lush pads that you have on the P-12. Check out Bank 1 program 21 Simple PWM, add a little slop and a bit of your own reverb and tell me this isn't huge. The P-12 is amazingly rich and warm in its own right - As close as you're going to get without Analog VCOs. Try saving the "It's a Prophet" Patch in the user bank after adding 18 clicks of slop, 5 clicks of girth and 7 clicks of the sub-oscillator. Compare this to the original in the factory banks. You're in for a real eye opener. In addition, the P-12 is incredibly versatile having 4 LFOs per voice, 26 Mod sources and nearly 100 destinations. I would suggest owning a P-12 keyboard with a P-6 module. Hopefully, DSI's next effort will be a completely analog P-12. This would be huge.

Comments about Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12 Polyphonic Synthesizer:

Being very big on vintage analog gear, I was skeptical about the use of digital wave forms in the Prophet 12. But almost immediately after plugging it in and hearing the sound, that skepticism disappeared.

However, perhaps what is truly the most outstanding feature of the Prophet 12 is not only it's vast deep programming ability, is the intuitiveness of the controls and system. The concept is brilliant: Give not two but four oscillators (and a sub on top of that) with full wave shaping capabilities, just like a square pulse wave, which can completely alter the sound in such musical ways. Then offer more ways to alter the sound, including adding Girth (deepness), Air (high end), Drive, Hack, and Decimate. Then take this custom wave and send it through a genuine analog low pass filter, an adjustable high pass filter (with resonance), and amplitude filters. There are four LFOs and an additional matrix editor that can send all kinds of sources to all kinds of destinations, again intuitively. Add one of the nicest distortion features, which for me, when used just slightly melts everything together like an old classic machine. Then offer one of the coolest effects at the end – 4 delays. You can custom design a chorus, flanger, echo, and even reverb.

The quality of the entire machine, including the outstanding keyboard feel is top notch. This reminds me of what the true "American made" quality of the past properly evolved to today. Hat's off to Dave Smith on this masterpiece.

Only one caveat: I would avoid the module version only because it loses the intuitive magic of the original keyboard design. The Prophet 12 keyboard is an outstanding controller (great action and aftertouch), and will also likely be your most used synth in your studio to it makes sense to have it front and center.
