Comments about Danelectro '59 Acoustic-Electric Resonator Guitar:

I was looking for a fun Christmas present for myself without breaking the bank. Didn't want to spend >$200 since I made some big purchases earlier in the year: LP Standard and Elite Strat!. One idea was an oil can guitar like those that Billy Gibbons raved about a few yrs ago, which I thought would be fun for slide playing. Even though I've played guitar since 1983, I have not practiced slide much (I primarily play '80s style hard rock, but love the '70s too). As I continued to think about slide playing, I started looking online at resonators. I only saw one in my price range, and as I perused the other options, the Danelectro caught my eye. The classic shorthorn body and coke bottle headstock made me immediately think of Jimmy Page. Naturally I gravitated to the black model because of the Page influence too. The reviews online seemed praising and even though it was definitely more than I had originally planned to spend, I went for it. Immediately out of the box it played well (I tuned it to Open E), but I did find the need to raise the action slightly. Acoustically it projects decently but I wouldn't necessarily call it loud - in a live situation, I would definitely amp it - but at home it's loud enough that I play it unplugged quite a bit. Plugging it in, I really enjoy the tonal versatility and the "blend" knob is a nice touch so you can find the right mix of the piezo and the neck lipstick pickup. I prefer the round tone of the lipstick pickup, so typically I will keep it dialed 75 to 100% in. Adding a little gain (and more piezo in the mix) and it's raw and nasty - in a good way! Not sure what more I can say at this time as I've only had it 9 days. In addition, as I said, I'm new to resonators, so if you are a serious resonator player, you will obviously be taking my opinion with a grain of salt. To summarize, I wanted something fun and the retro classic rock look hooked me. Tonally I'm also very happy and most importantly, I'm having a ton of fun :)
