DW's flagship line, the Collector' Series, are the original US-made custom drums. For years, drum makers have preferred maple and birch for their resonant tonal qualities. Maple is a traditional shell material that provides low-end punch, warmth and attack. This DW Shell Pack features North American Maple shells with 3-ply reinforcement hoops. Toms 8-13" are 6-ply, while 14" and bigger are 7-ply. Bass drums are 7-ply and snare drums are 10-ply (with 6-ply reinforcement hoops).
It also features DW' patented STM (suspension tom mount) system, which allows drums to vibrate independently, allowing maximum resonance while securely holding the drum in place. Because there are no washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuning is as easy as ever.
To give drummers even more control over their sound, DW created its patented True-Pitch rod system. The rods feature 5mm threads rather than the 12/24 that' standard on most other drums. To compare, there is 1 thread every 0.8mm on True-Pitch rods (about 20% more threads), versus 1 thread every 1.05mm on most other drums. The result is a more exacting tuning process.

Comments about DW Collector's Series 3-Piece Shell Pack w/20" Bass Drum:
I purchased this kit in late 2014 to play jazz and some funk and rock. For comparison, I own both US Gretsch and Ludwig kits. The workmanship on the DW kit is excellent and consistent with the top line Ludwig and Gretsch USA kits. The kit differs in sound quality primarily in the low frequencies. The DW kit sound is very strong in low frequencies. This is not simply a function of heads. I tried several batter heads and found that the DWs had a " preference" for lower turnings and also projected better in these ranges. If you think about it, drums are basically band pass filters taking the energy provided by the drummer and stick and tailoring that energy into a frequency spectrum that the drum delivers to the room. The DW shell designs are well documented on their web site and I do believe their approach does deliver a different "DW sound". Is it better, than the Ludwig and Gretch? I don't think so but it is different and certainly sounds great. I highly recommend this specific DW shell pack. The 20x16"bass is very versatile and can cross over between jazz, funk and rock with ease. It's also easier to transport than a 22x18" bass that is so popular these days. The 12" and 16" toms sound really rich and punchy and project well into a medium sized room without amplification. Finally, I grew up listening to greats like Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson that played white pearl kits, the finish work on this kit is understated and classy. Bottom line is that these are extremely well made, great sounding drums with excellent low frequency output with great tone and projection. . . . Highly recommended.
