D'Angelico EX-SS semi-hollow body

By JOHNNY LEONARD _

from Litchfield, ILL

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

This my first review at guitar center! I have owned Gibson, Fender and Epiphone, and they all are fine guitars. But I have always wanted a good Jazz guitar, but could not afford a really good one like the one that Mel Bay shows on his guitar books a D?Angelico until now. I have just received a D?Angelico EX-SS Semi-hollow body in Vintage sunburst, the quality of the finish is unreal and the wood is just astounding. Then you pick it up find out that it plays as well as it looks, the neck is like glass and the sound of the Kent Armstrong humbuckers pickups are a perfect match for the Semi-Hollow body. I have to say that at first I was a little leery of buying one because any time that a company goes out of business and then years later someone says we can make a product as good as the original makes you wonder. But I have to say that Mr. D?Angelico is smiling and should be very proud, because the company that is remaking is guitars is doing him justice. If imitating is a form of flattery then the makers of the new D?Angelico guitars is doing it right, I just want to say THANK YOU!! Johny C Leonard

D-Angelico-EX-SS-Semi-Hollowbody-Electric-Guitar

By Paul

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

This guitar is absolutly beautiful in every way. Finish and inlays are flawless with beautilul tuners and tail piece. If you are looking for guitar with that classic jazz sound and thinner body it is perfect. Also suitable for blues and some light rock. I have only owned this guitar for a month so i cannot say how well it will hold up over the years. Personally i will be handling with care and do not forsee any potential issues. Adding some flat wound strings did deepend the jazz tone though it lost some on the blues sounds. Overall this is a great guitar for the price and i highly reccomend it.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

I bought this guitar because I wanted a quality smaller full hollow body for a reasonable price. I have a Gibson LP with 50s neck being my comparison guitar for feel, have never played acoustic, and have an Epiphone 339 semi-hollow.

I am calling this a full hollow body because of its violin type construction, and use of a single small block (t-block) used to support the bridge. I am not reviewing the electronics because I did not buy it for that.

I have had the guitar for nearly a month now and is quickly becoming my do-it-all guitar. It has taken some getting used to as the neck dimensions, scale, and body size require a different style. It also took a little tweaking.

    What it does well:
    - The detail and finish of this guitar is its strongest selling point. The price is a little hard to stomach for an import guitar, but the finish and detail work is amazing.
    - The sound unplugged is deep and rich comparable to any smaller size full hollow body. That is what drew me to it. I played about 20 hollow and semi-hollow in a quiet room at several GCs before I made this decision. Its sound was clearly what I wanted and far different than any others I played.
    - I have the trans black with black hardware or whatever it is called. I love the color

My biggest complaints may be my inexperience with construction, but some I feel are valid:
    - The tail piece was not attached inline which caused problems visually and keeping tune. I removed it and shimmed one side of it. Big negative but an easy fix.
    - The neck is not mounted flat with the body, which transfers to the bridge NOT needing to be higher at low E. Normal for Dangelico?
    - The nut is not set evenly (cut) in the head. The string spacing is also noticeably off. I will have the nut replaced.
    - The only reason I spent this much was because I got 20% GC bucks with it. I think that is a more realistic price.
    - Loose internal stick-on wire loom causes buzzing

I still love the guitar and will have any issues fixed.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

Out of the box it was a joy to unpack. It was inside a box within a box. It was very protected. I opened the case. The guitar was beautiful. Pristine. No faults. Action was great. Plugged it in to my fender 150 acoustic
amp. Sounded great. Played Apache by the Shadows. Sounded very good. Played the standard Misty. The jazz sound of this guitar is excellent. (I bought it because I wanted a good jazz tone guitar. It surpassed my expectations.) I played it through my Fender Delux tube amp. Wow! Words cannot describe my joy. I swear I was not paid for tis review. I just love this guitar

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

Very nice guitar. Sounds nice, feels comfortable, finishing and fretwork are flawless. I bought it in a sale. I would not have bought for the full price, but I need to say this one feels and plays better that some Gibson 335 I have tried. No kidding.

      Why didn't I give it a 5 stars?
      - "Default" price - I understand Korean guitars are increasing their craftsmanship and quality control, and this D'Angelico Excel SS is really a guitar to consider if you want to buy a Gibson 335. But the "default" price aren't something easy to swallow for a Korean model.
      - Pickup - being fair, those Ken Armstrong sounds pretty honest, they have some warmth and clarity. But a set of SD Seth Lover would be definitive.
      - Tailpiece - I think this is the only real problem this guitar has. Hollowbodies and archtop guitars are commonly considered "buzz traps", but looks like the bridge and tailpiece that comes with the Excel SS has a quality problem. In my case, most of the buzz was coming because some of the saddles threads weren't tight enough on the intonation screws. The solution my guitar tech found: put a tiny little bit of loctite on the saddle threads after you adjust the intonation, also using some felt or rubber to mute the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece.

BTW, I need to say that I had contacted D'Angelico Customer Service when I was trying to discover that problem, and I've never seen a guitar company showing the attention they delivered to me!

Final words: do you know that feeling when you buy a guitar and think "this guitar feels really nice right now, but I could get something considerably better if I added a thousand grant over my budget"? So, I didn't have that feeling with the Excel SS. Okay, I'm not a professional jazz player. But I'm really picky about guitars, I have played and owned some nice axes in the last years, and the D'Angelico Excel SS was a pleasant surprise. Fix the tailpiece, change the pickups and you will have a top-notch instrument.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

All my life I've been an engineer by day, weekend warrior gigging musician by night. I'm now on the edge of retiring, loving life, collecting guitars and other gear for my home studio. This guitar is absolutely the sweetest sounding beauty on my wall. It feels sweet, looks sweet in the natural finish, but the tone is the biggest surprise. I bought it online without hearing it. I had no idea I'd fall in love again, with the tone of a guitar no less. I can't keep my hands off of her. And the affection is reciprocated. She loves me long time. It comes with a very sweet plush hardshell case. I did do a little setup work on her. I routinely setup all my guitars to my liking. The action was a little high for my liking right out of the box. And I added just a tad more tension on the neck. If you're not into working on your guitars, I'd recommend you get familiar with it. It's a joy to setup your favorite instruments to your own liking, especially when you have a great sounding guitar like this one, built with quality features like this guitar has, that let you maximize the pleasures of playing.

This guitar is crazy good. It plays like a dream, everything about it is comfortable from the body thickness to the neck shape. It sounds good for everything, I've put this thing through some serious distortion and it sounds better than any schecter on the market. The picture does not do it justice, the finish was drop-dead gorgeous. If you're looking for a hollow body, look no further.
