This edition is founded on the two manuscript copies of the work which are still in existence: both date from the eighteenth century. Details of these mansuscripts, and practical suggestions for the interpretation of Purcell's music, are given in the preface to the Full Score and Miniature Score. A facsimile of the first edition of the libreto (1689) is published separately.
