The Bell Chorus takes place after the troupe of actors arrive in Calabria in Pagliacci. The bells signify that the vespers service is about to begin, but for the town's youth, also ushers in the romance of the evening. The chorus illustrates the carefree life of the village people, adding greater contrast to the tragic conclusion.
