AT2020 | Cardioid Condenser Microphone

Audio-Technica

collapse expand iconDescription

If you’re looking for a studio-quality condenser microphone that balances value with versatility, the iconic Audio-Technica AT2020 is hard to beat. Delivering classic Audio-Technica performance at an incredible price, the AT2020 is perfect for budget-conscious musicians building out their first home studio, podcasters and streamers looking to level up their sound and seasoned vets in search of an affordable all-around performer to round out their audio arsenal.

Featuring a custom-engineered 16 mm low-mass diaphragm with extended frequency response and a wide dynamic range, this versatile condenser mic is capable of capturing both sparkling highs and rumbling lows with clarity and accuracy, making it a solid choice for everything from vocals to acoustic instruments to gained-out electric guitars. Ruggedly built yet affordably priced, the AT2020 is a valuable addition to any studio or live performance setup that can be counted on for years to come.

Built for Superior Performance in the Home Studio

Introduced in 2004, the Audio-Technica AT2020 set the standard for affordable studio microphones upon release and remains the brand’s best-selling mic to this day. Used by the likes of Billie Eilish and DIY indie rocker Mac DeMarco, it offers pro-level performance at an entry-level price. This side-address condenser microphone features a cardioid polar pattern that reduces sounds from the sides and rear, allowing you to isolate your sound source for crystal clear recordings. With a highly directional response resulting in minimal background noise, the AT2020 is ideal for artists working out of home studios, delivering great results even in rooms with minimal acoustic treatment.

A Low-Mass Diaphragm for Pristine Audio Detail

The AT2020’s custom-engineered low-mass diaphragm excels at preserving even the most delicate audio details with stunning fidelity. With an extended frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, it’s sensitive enough to capture sounds across the entire spectrum of human hearing—a rarity for a mic at this price point. Optimized for high-resolution digital recording equipment, the AT2020’s response remains relatively flat throughout, providing a balanced tonal profile perfect for a variety of applications. Its smooth high end captures the harmonic details and “airiness” of vocals and acoustic instruments, while the solid lows provide a firm foundation for a mix. With a sensitivity of -37dB, the AT2020's output level pairs perfectly with most audio interfaces and preamps.

High SPL Handling Provides Impressive Versatility

Given the limited mic lockers of most home recording enthusiasts, versatility is key when it comes to building out your arsenal. Boasting a wide dynamic range, the AT2020 functions admirably as an all-in-one workhorse for your home studio. From barely audible levels to heart-pounding high volumes, it provides an open, natural tone that’s ideal for vocals, acoustic guitars or drum overheads. The AT2020 can handle an impressively high maximum SPL of 144dB—perfect for those high-gain situations when you need to crank it up to 11. Whether you’re recording drums, horns, electric guitars, or high-intensity vocal takes, this mic offers plenty of headroom for clear and precise sound capture at almost any volume.

A Rugged Build and Accessories

The AT2020 is impressively solid for a budget condenser, boasting a durable all-metal chassis with a sturdy metal grille. With its rugged construction and high-quality materials, it’s an entry-level option that you can continue to come back to even as your home studio grows. It comes with solid stand mount—also all metal—that minimizes movement and keeps your mic securely in place, eliminating unwanted vibrations and handling noise. It’s compatible with most standard mic stands, while the included 5/8” to 3/8” adapter further expands your options. You’ll also receive a soft protective pouch to safely store and carry your microphone.

I use it for recording pipe organs - which is a challenge in-itself. Extreme dynamics, very low bass and very high treble. It all comes out clean with 2 of these mics. I was hoping that I could find an exact match for my other mic and sure enough - Audio-Technica is still producing this un-sung hero of the recording world.

I have more expensive mics that don't capture sound as well as my AT2020's. The sound is clear, low noise, and uncolored. If you want an honest mic that won't break the bank, you will be happy with this one. I used two in a stereo config on an opera singer (well back of the source, she's LOUD) in a recital hall for an audition video. I couldn't be happier with them.

Welcome to the audio rabbit hole. You're going to get great sound from the AT2020 XLR, but since it’s not a USB mic, you will need a couple of things to make it work with your MacBook Air. Here’s the simple breakdown of what you’ll need: 1. Audio Interface: You can’t plug an XLR mic like the AT2020 directly into your Mac. You need an audio interface that: Accepts XLR input, Provides phantom power (+48V), which the AT2020 needs to work, Connects to your Mac via USB-C or USB-A, Popular beginner-friendly audio interfaces: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (super popular and reliable), MOTU M2 (very clean sound, excellent metering), Behringer UMC22 (more budget-friendly), 2. XLR Cable: You’ll need a standard XLR male-to-female cable to connect the mic to the interface. 3. Recording Software (DAW) You’ll want something to actually record with on your Mac. A few good beginner options: GarageBand (comes free on your Mac — honestly, it’s fantastic for starting out), Audacity (free, simple, and open-source), Reaper (not free, but very powerful and affordable), 4. Setup Steps: Plug the AT2020 into the interface with your XLR cable. Plug the interface into your Mac via USB. Turn on phantom power (+48V) on the interface. Open your recording software. Select your audio interface as the input device. Hit record and test your levels!
