Comments about Alfred Drummer Wanted - Book & CD:
I've played drums for over 50 years, and for the past few years have been digging back into reading and buying books, etc. For reference, I've gone from reviewing the basics on up to reading solo's written for drums only, plus buying theory, style-learning, and sheet music books of popular songs, plus all those downloads off the internet.
The description given above is very accurate for this book, especially re your level of proficiency (drummers-that means "how good you are").
This is a relatively new book and the title puts you in the right direction for the material. It's well organized and if you want or need to focus on one specific, unfamiliar tempo, you can easily get to it. Once you do, you'll have a very accurate groove written above the full song written "economically" with repeat bars, to play along to an mp3-type "CD+" file of the song. (Yo-my player plays both, player.)
Each original song in the book also offers well known or accessible songs to play that style to, as well as typical tempos if you want to practice on your own.
Not even a complaint, but although the music is well produced, the cd may not be that well made, and here I'm being picky cuz it works good enough so far and this is for practice. My cd will sometimes skip a bar or two, although not in the same place twice. But that's hard to play along to when it does! But it IS fun to hear the computer voice pronounce "play-along" when she announces the tracks, though.
Something that I liked is that Mr. Mullowney did NOT rehash all the theory and note/rest values etc etc etc, that virtually all the educational books include. I don't need those pages and if you don't either, but need to know more about how to actually play unfamiliar musical styles right away or maybe in the future, buy this book!
