Overview

MPD218 is a MIDI-over-USB pad controller designed for producers, programmers, musicians and DJs. Its blend of MPC controls and technologies mesh with USB connectivity brings the feel of classic beat making into computer music production.

Experience the Difference
The first improvement agreed upon over the development cycle were the Thick Fat MPC pads, a new design that creates an unprecedented user experience. The MPD218 also has an expanded control set of six knobs in three banks. This enables you increased control over your sounds and effects.

MIDI information is sent over its plug-and-play USB interface for use on Mac or PC, eliminating the need for drivers. The USB connection powers the MPD218 so the included USB cable is all you need.

Along with the improved functionality, the MPD218 features iOS compatibility using the Camera Connection Kit (sold separately) and included free software. Titles include: Akai Pro MPC Essentials, Big Bang Drums and Big Bang Cinema from Sonivox, Ableton Live Lite, and Software Preset Editor.

Many years of research and customer feedback have led directly to some of the most capable pad controllers Akai has developed. It is this constant contact with the user base that makes Akai such an enduring brand. These MPDs are the perfect bridge between your creativity and your computer-based studio.

I really wanted to like the MPD218. It's well built, super portable, easy to set up, the endless encoders are fantastic, and the simple functionality is exactly what I need for my setup. Using midi mapping in Ableton I could control custom filters and presets in synths and drumsets really nicely. The only downside, and the dealbreaker for me, is that the pad sensitivity is not adjustable. They're pretty blunt force and require a much harder tap than I like for the minimum input. I suppose if you are hammering all the time they're fine, but I'm going for subtleties and expressiveness, and I just couldn't coax the kind of dynamics from it that I wanted. I searched for a software hack to make this adjustment possible, but found nothing. I also occasionally experienced the double tap that others have mentioned. So I returned it. Apparently this is the only unit in Akai's pad lineup that doesn't allow adjustment of the touch sensitivity. Guess I'll have to fork out 4-5x more for one of the higher end MPCs to get the dynamics and feel I'm seeking.

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

Most basic of the MPD lineup, 2nd generation. New pad design is amazing, knobs are big and smooth, buttons feel good and base is very solid. It can do a lot more than just drumbeats and basslines, if you know anything about MIDI.

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

Could not get this to work with Abelton live. I would be able to select it as the midi input, but could not get it to do anything. Videos and walk throughs were no help either because they would show a completely different screen than what I was looking at. If you do not know Abelton Live, I would tell you that all this is going to do is frustrate you. If you do know Abelton Live, you may love it, who knows. I ended up returning it since I couldn't get it to work.

Comments about Akai Professional MPD218 Pad Controller:

I use the mpd218 in my recording setup mainly to create drum parts. The pads allow for a much more dynamic and realistic approach to sequencing drum parts. The note repeat function alone makes it worth the price. the ability to do cymbal rolls and add velocity by adding pressure to the pad makes my drum parts sound even more realistic. I don't really use the knobs so no real comment about them. It is not limited to drums though. You can trigger anything with it because it is a midi (over usb) device. it has a few advanced features and comes with a software editor so you can to some degree adjust how you use it. Overall I love it and it is one of the most valued pieces in my production setup.

works well with all daws and easy to use if you understand the computor side .lol i wouldnt reccomend it since there betters options out there

                performaces issues
-knobs do full unlimited 360 rotations so this this throws me off if im using fliters and phasers and flangers or wobbles i personally perfer to a know with lines to guide me

-pad sensitivity needs to be higher lets just say your double tapping with one hand two and fingers before a drop while multi tasking i shouldnt have to apply to much pressure on my fingers to get a responce cause pads are suppose to be triggers with a slight touch so it dosnt feel natural when you play faster

-than again i own somthing better than this so only listen to me if you want

Great pads... I had used an older version of this model and the pads were usable but not sensitive enough. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box to find a revised version, with softer pad materials, and much increased sensitivity! I do have the occasional double-hit problem where it fires twice when I only hit it once, but it's honestly not a problem for my application... Live performers may not like that though. 4 stars because I've a limited experience with these types of controllers and have reservations about the rotary controllers and how they'll integrate into my DAW. Seems to be a well built unit, especially for the price. Pads have a nice feel to them so far - we'll see how they hold up over the long run but very satisfied so far. Integrated easily with my DAW.

Unfortunately the unit I received suffered from the "double tap" problem on certain pads. I had read about this problem in reviews but took a chance anyway. It's a shame really as the controller itself is really nice.

There amid an extensive set up process and then it still might not work. Very little info comes with the devise and YouTube and google have very little info as well. If all you want to do is pretend to play the drums, this is for you. To actually be able to perform, grab the Maschine mikro or the full-size Maschine. I'd save your money and grab a piece that will at least be worth the frustration.

Besides the fact that the box was opened and the product appeared used even though I ordered a "new" product, these pads work great. Guitar Center is lucky that Akai makes such a great product - It comes with some solid included software, and the pads are big, responsive and the knobs are very solid.
