This specially priced Education Edition of Ableton Live 8 lets educators show students the capabilities of a professional music production software used by many artists who create and share their music.
One of the ways Ableton Live 8 software gives songwriters and DJ's the advantage, especially in the live setting, is its two main views which allow all work to be done within a single application. The Session View is essentially a musical scratch pad. Ideas can be worked out and you can improvise in a free and easy environment. Each cell in the Session View grid can hold a recording, MIDI file, or any other musical idea, whether they're recorded on the spot or dragged in from the browser. Then you can play your ideas in any order or any time you wish. The Arrangement View takes a more traditional, timeline-based approach to multitrack recording, MIDI sequencing, and other music production tasks. It will record all your actions as you improvise in the Session View, allowing you to edit them whenever you like. Either view is simple and basic enough to make your tasks simple and efficient, which is especially useful during a live performance. This makes the software a perfect tool for studios, beat creators, DJs, sound designers, and anyone who wants to create music in a fun and easy way.
Version 8 enhances Ableton software's vision of creative, real-time digital music with a wealth of improved techniques, effects, and workflow improvements:
New groove engine
Groove patterns can add life and swing to straight sequences. Live 8's new groove engine lets you apply groove patterns in real time, extract grooves from audio or MIDI sources, and quantize audio and MIDI in real time. It also comes with a new groove library.
New warping engine
Live 8 Education Edition introduces a more direct way of working with warping and some important Warp Mode enhancements. You can now warp audio events by adjusting the events themselves on the timeline. Beats Mode has been updated, and there's a completely new Complex Warp Mode. Plus, you can slice audio files to MIDI tracks based on transients.
A much-requested feature, the Ableton Looper effect gives you classic sound-on-sound looping without the limitations of a hardware device. Looper is set up for remote operation, so you can record, overdub, undo, and more without touching the computer.
Ableton Live 8 includes five powerful effects not found in earlier versions: Vocoder, Multiband Dynamics, Overdrive, Limiter, and Frequency Shifter. These effects cover all the well-known aspects of these devices, but really shine due to some innovative features and enhancements from the Ableton labs.

Ableton Live is a great tool for songwriting! It is mostly used by the techno / hip hop crowd, but I use it mainly as a scratchpad for writing guitar riffs and putting those together to songs. Much more convenient than a looper (there is one build in, if you still need one). The matrix view is where the magic is! The Edu pricing is of course very attractive, even if you (like me) don't use the virtual instruments and only some of the effects.
I use Live 8 an not the Education Edition but it's the same. When I got Live 8 it just blew my mind how easy it was 2 use, if u have the right sample packs that fit ur needs. I like the vocoder alot on Ableton, I like that u don't need 2 go out an get a real expensive midi controller/keyboard, an i like that it's just endless things u can do with Live 8. If u an a friend r working on a track an both of u have Ableton an the same sample packs u can send them the track an they can work on it...1 to 10 I'd give Live 8 a +10
It seems to be made really well. It's easy on the eys and stable if your computer has good specs. If not, which is my case, it can be kinda slow. I've had the cpu reach 500%, but I'm certain that's because of bloody windows xp. It boosts creativity and is easy to use. That's a 10 for me. Not only can you produce electronic music; you can do multitrack recording and create mixes. It's extremely fun to use, like nothing else. I find it really easy to get cool sounds from it. The manipulation options and included effects are brilliant It's slightly difficult to begin with, because of the unconvential way it's laid out. The included tutorials help quite a lot and once you get the hang of things, other DAWs seem awkward. I LOVE using this program, because it's so smooth. It lacks note scores, track folders and a couple of other things which I would really like. I reckon this will come eventually, as Ableton listen to their users. I can see myself using this program a lot in the following years.
Wow... I am glad I found ableton when I did. I have used Reaper, Cubase, Reason, and Protools. Ableton is the perfect tool to write songs and play them out. Just add a TriggerFinger, Launchpad, or if you are rich a Jazzmutant Lemur. Everyone is using it, Plasticman, Pretty Lights, Glitchmob. The quality is not as good as Protools or Cubase, but those are more instudio DAW, where Abelton is more of a real world application. If Ableton had 10 stars, I would pick it. Love Love Love!
I purchased Ableton Live 8 for the purpose of adding click and guide tracks on stage at church. For my purposes, it worked so much smoother than Reason. It is fully controllable and flexible when used live on stage. Setup is easy -- i wouldn't go without it!
This software is pretty much awesome. I use it for making drum fills when i am writing ideas for guitar. There is alot of tools to work with and takes a little bit of learning curve. But great for recording and over dubbing.
