  • This guitar changed my life

As reviewed by Scott Richey on 5/8/2012

Great, great, great product!!! First, the bad: The earbuds that come with it are terrible. I used my own hearphones, and the quality significantly improved. Second, although there is an amp jack, this guitar does not sound very good running through an amp. It is okay, but only okay. The good news: This guitar has the good and highly consistent quality you would expect of any Yamaha. The action is good; all the frets ring out fine; it looks like a quality instrument. The great news: You can play this guitar anywhere, anytime. You can play it in the same room where others are watching television. You can play it next to a room where people are sleeping. You can play it at any hour in an APARTMENT. Heck, you can play it at the local coffee shop and the background music drown out this guitar. You will be able to practice anywhere, anytime. Do not buy this guitar for the quality of sound it produces. Buy it because you will be able to practice to your heart's content without bothering anyone else.

  • Excellent practice instrument.

As reviewed by Joseph Chambers on 5/19/2014

I purchased this in order to practice at the odd hours my work schedule allows without disturbing the wife. For this purpose the Silent Guitar is excellent. The neck and fretboard are a classical guitar's, requiring the same hand positions, stretches, etc. The build and component quality is also very good, and the device is solid (and a bit heavier than an acoustic instrument) in a classical position, with some finagling. It works better with a footstand than a cushion. The tone is good in the trebles but sounds amplified on the bass strings through headphones; the earbuds that come with the SG are worthless except at the gym. The soun is much better through quality cans. Run through an acoustic amp the tone is passable but wouldn't fool a blindfolded listener. And the effects sound quite artificial and out of place for this instrument. By the way, one can hear notes well enough to practice without plugging in. The gig bag is well designed and when disassembled the whole thing is slightly bigger than a squash raquet shoulder bag--very portable and so far no issues with damage in transport. It should be excellent for travel and I would feel safe stuffing it--carefully--in the top level of the overhead bin; as the headstock is angled and has only moderated padding, I doubt it would tolerate much external pressure. Overall I am very pleased and it has increased my practice time. That said, I still prefer to play my regular acoustic classical guitar by a large margin.
