sE Electronics SERF Reflexion Filter 3.5 (103846226)
Availability:

Record vocals, guitars, and more with a 'drier' sound without an acoustically treated room.

The Reflexion Filter 3.5 is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambiance. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise. The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy. The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter. The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position. The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

  • Great for home studios

As reviewed by Verdict on 9/7/2010

I've had this for two years now and it's really helped in my recordings. The noise floor and lack of mud of vocal takes and general instrument recordings in my studio is night and day from before. I use it every time I record vocals and instruments at home now. Another thing that is great about this is that I prefer the figure 8 polar pattern for vocals a majority of the time when compared to regular cardoid. Before the filter, I hardly ever used the figure-8 option because just too much noise would creep into the signal. With the filter, I'm able to record with a figure-8 polar pattern (and omni) and I feel like I'm getting more of my money's worth out of the mics I already have. Great product and well worth it, even though its expensive.

  • Great investment

As reviewed by Rodney on 4/21/2011

After adding this filter to my home studio with limited acoustic treatment, I got nothing but great feedback from the artist I record. They all noticed the differnce in how they sound on recordings as compared to before. We all agree that the sound is much fuller. Making my clients happy = equals more money!!! :) Great investment.

  • Home Studio

As reviewed by Beau Miles on 2/9/2007

So I just go this the other day and immediately used it for vocals in a small home studio. The vocalist was standing in an open room and singing through an ST77. The sound was great but that mainly comes through the pre, mics and cables. The sound would normal have been relatively thin b/c of the room noises. Instead it sounded great and smooth. No, it was no vocal booth but for a home studio I know nothing that competes other than spending a ton on Auralex. The moving dia. that is in the filter is great and produces a great noise canceling effect. The worse part was setting it up but that wasn't hard really. Overall, it is GREAT. A must have for any SERIOUS engineer
