Product Information

Record vocals, guitars, and more with a 'drier' sound without an acoustically treated room.

The Reflexion Filter 3.5 is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambiance. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise.

The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy.

The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter.

The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position.

The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

NEW REVIEW - WORTH IT!

I was using alesis 8 channel usb mixer and some mic ( worth like 80 bucks, cant remember the name) and the sound quality was horrible especially considering the fact that i didnt have any sound proof equipment. well i bought the M-Audio Sputnik along with this filter. As i was waiting for the mic to arrive i setup this reflection filter to see if it would make any difference and WOW! made my old mic sound really good. NO OUTSIDE NOISE if u set the postion of the mic correctly...cancelled computer noise too which was important!!! THIS IS WORTH IT....it will make ur vocals sound soooo smooth.

Home Studio

So I just go this the other day and immediately used it for vocals in a small home studio. The vocalist was standing in an open room and singing through an ST77. The sound was great but that mainly comes through the pre, mics and cables. The sound would normal have been relatively thin b/c of the room noises. Instead it sounded great and smooth. No, it was no vocal booth but for a home studio I know nothing that competes other than spending a ton on Auralex. The moving dia. that is in the filter is great and produces a great noise canceling effect. The worse part was setting it up but that wasn't hard really. Overall, it is GREAT. A must have for any SERIOUS engineer

SE Reflection filter

This is a great filter. As soon as you put it up to your face and talk into it you can hear what it does. There are now other things out there by RealTraps, that are bigger but they block your view of the singer when they record. This is a lot better than the Auralex mic thing. This is not a magic bullet though as it is best to have some acoustic treatment in your room, including an absorption panel behind the singer as well. Call Real Traps or GIK Acoustics for that. Make sure you have the mic just on the inside of the filter. It sounds best with this setup. This really makes your home recordings sound much better as you don't get the voice hitting off the walls and getting into your mic. Have a strong stand, and push the rod all the way in to put more of the weight towards the center.

Expensive, but works great!

This thing works wonders in open rooms that reverberate a lot. Before I got this, I could always hear that 'open room' sound on my tracks. This won't give you a 100% dead/dry sound, but combined with other cheap treatment methods, you could achieve vocals that sound like they were recorded in a properly treated environment. Pair this up with a nice mic and add a quality preamp and you will have nice clean vocals!
