  • The Great Disappointment

As reviewed by Colin H on 1/31/2013

I really REALLY, wanted to like this kit, but it's just not there. I am severely disappointed in ddrum here. I have a ddrum snare which I love to death, so I expected similar quality from this drumset. Obviously, this was not the case. There are SO many little build quality issues with this thing, Spefically, the wrap finish looks like someone did it in a big hurry. The seam is pretty obvious. Then there's the "lugs." They're these sort of metal insert things into plastic hooks and the tension rod screws into this. I don't even know what the theory was on these things. I guess it was a cheaper option or something. At any rate, they're very difficult to get in properly and often freeze up when finger tightening, even after lube. The hoops don't even line up perfectly with the lugs. Also, there are nicks in the bearing edge of the largest floor tom. I mean wtf ddrum? That is THE most important part of a drum. Oh, and there was a crack in the shell of the bass drum, that doesn't seem to affect the tone. In fact, the virgin kick is the nicest sounding part of this kit. There many other little basic quality issues as well, that I have not the time to mention. All that being said, I managed to get some good tone out of this with some good evans heads. Still struggling with the floor toms tho. Honestly, I lost faith in Ddrum after buying this kit. I will never ever buy their products again, and I cannot recomend this kit. I would have returned this if it wasn't such a hassle to ship. I guess I'll live with my foolish decision.

  • Not as nice as I wanted

As reviewed by Jeff Skinner on 11/30/2012

I ordered the Ddrum Journeyman Rambler online and had to return it due to a cracked bass drum shell. But I might have returned the kit anyway. I ordered the kit because I really like the fact that it has a virgin kick with a single rack tom and dual floor toms. I even liked the 13" snare. Plus the included cymbal stands save a lot of money compared to a shell pack. Unfortunately, the kit is lower quality than I expected. My first complaint is that the bass drum hoops are made out of a thin piece of folded and painted steel with a plastic strip down the middle. Even on an entry level kit, I expect wood bass drum hoops. And I expected this to be a mid-level kit. My second complaint is that the lugs on all the drums are made out of molded plastic with small steel inserts to accept the tension rods. Again, I would expect metal lugs on even a bargain kit. Generally, the hardware on the kit looked bad. The two cymbal stands seem decent, but not surprisingly the kick pedal and high hat pedal looked pretty weak. The bass drum "claws" (which hold the hoops to drum) felt very cheap and the shell wraps (my kit was midnight black) looked very sloppy. All the wraps had very obvious seams. As far as I can tell, the kit is only available online ... and I think that is intentional. The kit looks great in its pictures online, but it might turn people off in person. The kit probably sounds pretty good and it might look good on stage, but it probably isn't a kit that you will keep for years and years. I'm a guitar player and I bought the kit to use in my home studio. I will probably never play drums on stage, so I didn't need a kit that is pretty or even road worthy. I might have kept the kit if the shell wasn't cracked, but I'm glad I didn't have to make that decision. I know I would be disappointed with it.

  • Great Set For the Price!

As reviewed by Victor on 8/25/2014

I recently purchases this kit to get back into drumming. I'm not a pro drummer or anything, and drumming is more or less just a hobby, but nonetheless I was looking for a set that is one step above beginner so I can grow on it. This is just the set I was looking for. Sure, it's not a DW set, but DDrum really did a great job. The hardware is sturdy and the drums were easy enough to set up and tune to where I wanted them, all done in less than 3 hours. The included lugs and cymbal / tom clamps do their respected jobs perfectly. And the best part - the drums sound really good. I'm currently just using the stock heads, but with some Evans or Remo heads, these will sound even better. My favorite thing about the kit is probably the kick pedal and the virgin bass - both outstanding quality for an intermediate set. The drums look really nice too (I have the orange kit). Sure on a few drums you can see the seam where it was wrapped, but it's a $500 set not a $2000 one, so this is to be expected. You can't expect perfection in the music world without having the investment into it. But for me, this set is perfection. It gets the job done and sounds just as I want it to - and with a lot of tuning and good heads, you can really get it to sound even better. I have no doubts this thing will last me many many years and will keep me happy every second of these years. Thank you DDrum, you've done well. The other reviews seem to reflect issues with damage - probably which occurred in shipping from Guitar Center. My boxes were beat up - but I inspected every inch of this thing - spotless. If you are a beginner drum and enjoy the rambler style like I do - get this set. You will just need to pick up some cymbals and you're good to go! Excellent kit.
