Overview

Zoom revolutionizes recording with the first digital recorder with 16-track playback and 8-track simultaneous recording that uses Secure Digital (SD) memory. The R16 recorder is three production tools in one incredibly versatile device. It's a digital multi-track recorder, an audio interface and a control surface, providing you with all the tools necessary to create studio-quality recordings anywhere.

The R16 combines a remarkable level of functionality with intuitive design. For recording purposes, the unit supports up to 32GB SD cards (includes 2GB card), allowing over 100 track hours of recording. The flexibility of SD recording not only makes the R16 lighter and more portable, it also ensures increased reliability with no concern for a crashing hard drive. You can even have respective SD cards dedicated to specific recording sessions. Back up your project on a USB memory stick.

With the ability to record up to 8 tracks simultaneously, it's easy to capture a live band or even a complete drum kit. The R16 features built-in stereo condenser microphones for field recording or quick, convenient "sketch-pad" capturing of ideas and rehearsals. It also provides 8 combination XLR-1/4-inch inputs along with one Hi-Z input for direct connection of guitar or bass. And the R16 also runs on 6 AA batteries for the ultimate in multi-track portability.

USB operation means you can control each function of your favorite DAW software from the R16 for easy mixing with fine-tuned control. Incorporate any of the 100+ built-in studio effects to enhance your recording and use the pro-quality mastering effects to complete that studio sound. You can even connect two R16s via USB for synchronized operation and 16 tracks of simultaneous recording.

With the Zoom R16, versatility, control and comprehensive features come together in a single device that puts the power to produce professional recordings right at your fingertips.

OK, I have seen some negative reviews on this unit but it seems to me that the negative reviewers may be persons who do not have a whole lot of experience with pro audio recording. Myself, as someone with experience recording in everything from analog to digital using software, hardware, workstations, interfaces, etc, I can honestly say that this is an extremely well engineered product that is smart, intuitive, easy to understand and use and chock-full of functions and extras that you wouldn't have expected from a unit of this type in this price range just a few short years ago. Being able to move tracks to and from computers is amazing and a great time-saver! Being able to record 6 tracks simultaneously is mind blowing for such a small, compact unit! The sound is very quiet and amazing and the unit creates very strong, powerful, robust signals. The industry is growing and creating products by leaps and bounds these days but it all comes down to knowing what you are doing and having experience with recording basics. There is never any substitute for knowledge.

I'm just getting acquainted with the Zoom R16

I got this 2 days ago and have spent several hours with it. I am not experienced with audio recording but I do have a master's degree in engineering. Wow! The manual ! Seriously, it's the worst I've ever seen. I WILL figure out how to work this device. I have recorded one track (yay!) and it sounds great. The potential of the Zoom R16 is very impressive. I will, no doubt, create lots of excellent recordings with this machine. Back to the hardcopy manual that is included, I've read sections repeatedly and still have not understood them. I've read carefully enough that I've found typographical errors in the manual. My intention is not to be negative here. Just be aware that reading the manual will cause self-inflicted head hair loss.

Comments about Zoom R16 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller:

This is unit #2 for myself & my music collaboration partner. Why 2? Because they can be linked together to give 16 live real time tracks (32 tracks total) in live performance. In home studio recording, we use the R16's separately on our own time in our own homes & meet once a week to share files & projects. There is a bit of learning curve to begin with, but Zoom's navigation logic is consistent & becomes 2nd nature after a short while.

Comments about Zoom R16 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller:

Lightweight, portable, lots of features. The only downside is that, contrary to the US advertisements, it CANNOT be used as a control surface for GarageBand. I won't take off a star for a failure by their marketing department. Oh, and Cubase LE7 is horrible.

Comments about Zoom R16 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller:

Very satisfied with the Zoom R 16 , as a stand alone unit I was able to record after a short study of the books, unit is backed by a great Zoom forum on the internet to assist with any questions to help you understand the unit. It fits well into a brief case to make it very portable and safe.Making me happy with my choice . Very happy with Guitar center and delivery was fast. A quick way into recording jingles.

An update and an upgrade in my earlier published rating

        By Campbell Amos

        from San Bernardino

Comments about Zoom R16 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller:

This is an update and an upgrade in my earlier published rating of the Zoom R16. Now that I've had it a month, spent hours trying to understand the Operator's Manual, set down tracks for a few tunes, and, most importantly, read the official Zoom users Internet blogs, I am happy to report that I am satisfied with the operation and results from the R16. I haven't changed my mind about the Zoom R16 Operator's Manual however - I still think it is the worst I've ever read. What really helped me was the official blog (zoomforum.com) especially one post by Kevin Selby on effects. The blog contains a link (http://kbselby.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/r16_effects_tutorial.pdf) to a document that is far better written than the Operator's Manual. So now that I have used the R16 effects, I feel that I'm on my way to making very good recordings of myself playing drums (machine programming), bass, rhythm and lead guitar. The Zoom R16 can't however make me a good singer. It does make me a singer that one can listen to however. In summary, the Zoom R16 is a very impressive device; just be prepared for its steep learning curve. (I have a strong technical background; the Zoom R16 is my first use of a multitrack recorder.)

        An excellent device!

        By Philip Parker

        from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Zoom R16 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller:

I?m not sure I?ll ever find a portable computer/DAW that?s as powerful and responsive as my basement studio setup and even portable computers need an audio interface. The Zoom machine is really good alternative for location recording. If you understand recording principals, you will find that the R-16 is intuitive and easy to use with an abundance of mixing functions and effects control. The compact size of course means that half of the tracks and all of the EQ/effects controls are hidden behind buttons and menus that may be confusing and hard to find if you don?t grasp the concept quickly. But if you know what you are trying to do with the sound, moving around the menus is not that difficult. Recording eight individual tracks at once is great for drums and live performances! Moving and bouncing tracks is quick and easy. Transferring and copying tracks and projects between the R-16 and a computer works great. And the tracks are remarkably strong and quiet. The effects are nothing to brag about but they are quite usable and very adjustable. I did try using it as a straight eight input USB interface to my PC DAW and it worked fine but as long as I can move the tracks later for mixing and mastering, I don?t see the need to push things across a USB connection to a computer that I don?t really need to capture the audio. For a home based studio it should work fine as an interface or control surface. The tiny display can be a little annoying if you are doing a hunt and peck through the menus, but once you understand where things are? punching a button and spinning the wheel will quickly take you anywhere. After being a devoted Tascam fan since the one-inch tape days, I think the Zoom is more versatile and powerful than anything close to its size and price range today.
