Audio connections: inputs
The H6 offers four main inputs (1-4), plus two additional inputs (L, R) that are derived from whichever capsule (X/Y, MS, Shotgun, or Dual XLR/TRS Combo) is plugged into the unit. The supplied XYH-6 X/Y capsule also provides a secondary input for connecting an external mic- or line-level signal via a stereo 1/8" Mic/Line In mini phone jack. When a connection is made to that jack, signal from the X/Y microphones is muted.

All four main H6 inputs (inputs 1-4) are combo connectors that can accept either XLR or 1/4" balanced or unbalanced phone cables. They can handle both mic and line-level signals, which means that you can connect either external microphones or line-level devices like mixers, portable music players, electronic keyboards, or electric guitars or basses with active electronics (passive electric guitars or basses can also be connected with the use of a mixer or effects device). Internal switching contacts automatically detect the circuit of choice.

Audio connections: outputs
The H6 Line Out is an unbalanced stereo 1/8" phone jack, located on the bottom of the H6, beneath the LCD display. It carries the analog stereo output signal, as determined by the H6's internal mixer. The H6 USB port, located on the side panel to the right of the LCD display, provides a digital output of either a stereo mix or the six individual input signals, depending upon the setting of the "Audio Interface" function in the USB menu.

In addition, the H6 provides a headphone output with a dedicated volume control, located on the side panel to the left of the LCD display. Connect your headphones to the stereo 1/8" mini phone jack for private monitoring of the stereo output signal. The H6 even has a built-in speaker, located on the underside of the unit, for fast monophonic monitoring of the recorded signal without the need to make any connections whatsoever. This speaker is automatically disconnected when connection is made to either the Line Out or Headphone output.

        The main reason for this purchase was because I needed a good stand alone field recorder for filming interviews. That works perfect however, I also got this because I like the 4 and 6 multitrack recording option.
        Sadly, it doesn't operate as a true multitrack recorder because you can't overdub on the same input which would be ideal for singer songwriter or individual musicians (not in a band)

        Other than that, it's pretty much solid,

          Fast and quick, great for Gig recording

          I needed a recorder that didn't take any time to setup to record gigs, and video. This unit fit the bill. I used it on the main audio portion for the recent band video and the quality was great. I recorder 2 left right channels off the main bd 2 live zoom mikes (comes with the unit) and 2 channels sub vocals. 6 channels in all. love this unit. buy it.

          Lots of H4n features missing, very disappointed!!

          I think the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder is a great product and well ahead of its competitors in a number of areas. However, whether you will like this recorder depends on what you want to do with it. The recording level dials, the docking feature for mics and extra inputs, better quality color LCD screen and better sound quality due to improved preamps are all great new feaures over thos on the H4n. I owned an H4n before this. I loved what I could do with it, but a number of things were very frustrating to deal with. I sold the H4n and purchased the H6 in mid-January based on extensive preliminary research on the H6 and comparisons between the H4n and H6. All reviews were extremely positive. I purchased based on a review I saw on Amazon.com. The reviewer said that he had contacted Zoom Tech Support about some feature that the H4n had, and he couldn't find on the H6. He said Zoom assured him that the H6 could do anything the H4n could plus more. I took this to mean that all features and functionality of the H4n were still present on the H6. Nothing could be further from the truth! I got burned by believing this statement. My main use for the H4n and the H6 is to record songs with a band I am in. Critical to me are the overdubbing features, as I am using the recorder as a small home recording studio. I didn't explore the overdubbing functionality the H6 until about 2 months after I bought it. Much to my surprise, I discovered that about 95% of the overdubbing functionality that was in the old H4n recorder is no longer present in the H6! At that point, it was too late to return the unit. As I got more familiar with the H6, I found a number of other important features of the H4n that were also missing on the H6. The following H4n features are missing from the H6: 1) The ability to go to any point in a recorded project when overdubbing to fix mistakes, or add a new overdubbed part anywhere within the song. On the H6 you can only start at the beginning of a song and overdub the entire song or stop it somewhere within the song. There is no ability to move to any point in the song. The only buttons that work in overdub mode are the track selector buttons to choose your track, the record and stop buttons. This was a critical feature for me, and it doesn't exist on the H6. 2) The ability to punch in and punch out of record at pre-determined spots on the timeline in overdub mode either manually or automatically via pre-programming. 3) The ability to use track markers or A/B repeat when in overdub mode. 4) The ability to assign any recorded file to any available track for playback. The lack of this feature forces you to physically switch the mic or instrument being recorded to a different track input when overdubbing to allow simultaneous playback of recorded overdubs. 5) The inclusion of 50 editable effects, including reverb, delay, phase shifter, flanger, wah-wah, pitch shift, and a number of guitar and bass amp simulators that could be applied to tracks recorded in Multi-track mode. 47 of the 50 effects that were included on the H4 were removed from the H6. The compressor, limiter and low-cut filter are the only effects from the H4n that remain on the H6. 6) The ability to manage and delete track marks. On the H6 you can only view a list of track markers, but you are not able to do anything about them, except add more. 7) The ability to delete a recorded "take". A "take" is a concept of the H6, not on the H4n. On the H6 it refers to multiple recordings on the same track. There is no way to delete them once they have been recorded. 8) The ability to delete any recorded track. 9) The ability to rename recorded tracks. 10) The ability to even see the names of the recorded track files on the H6 is now goone. 11) The ability to playback any .wav or .mp3 file. The H6 can only play back the files it creates, or at least ones that use its naming conventions. You can get around items 7-10 by hooking a USB cable between the H6 and a computer and setting the H6 to SD Reader mode, which makes it look like an external drive to the computer. You can then view, rename or delete track files from the computer. However, renamed files will no longer be playable on the H6. Renaming and deleting of recorded files could be done on the H4n itself, without the need to connect to a computer. This is a pretty big list of features that are missing on the H6. Out of all the reviews I read and Youtube comparison videos I watched, not one of them mentioned that all these features that were available on the H4n are now MIA on the H6. Had I known most of the overbubbing functionality was removed from the H6, I probably would not have purchased it. That was one of the main reasons I bought it. I contacted Zoom Tech Support by email. I verified that these features are indeed missing. They also told me that there are no plans to restore these features through a firmware update, so I am completely out of luck. Since the overdub function on the H6 no longer works like it did on the H4n, I figured if I could have the H6 act as an USB audio interface and record directly to the DAW software on my PC, I could get around the limitation. However, I can't seem to get that to work properly either. I downloaded the most recent multi-track driver for the H6 from Zoom's web site, and installed it on my PC. The Zoom driver seems very inconsistent. Sometimes it records, sometimes it does not. Also, it usually creates anywhere from 2-4 additional blank tracks that I have to go back and delete. When I play back the recorded track, I sometimes get a very loud buzzing noise that sounds like a shorting cable. It sounds like the H6 triggers something in the the software. If I close the DAW application and reopen it, everything is back to normal. It just seems very random and inconsistent. I asked Zoom Tech Support about this problem as well, and they never responded.

          Game Changer!

          I used to use a Tascam DR-40, which was temporary because it was borrowed. Initially, I had my eye n the Zoom H4N, because it was "popular". But while I was thinking it over, I ran out and picked up a Zoom R24. I didn't like the Zoom R24 at all, the preamps are really bad. Then I noticed that reviews were saying the same about the H4N, so I began to reconsider the brand. Once I heard about the upcoming release of Zoom H6 (months before it arrived), I was intrigued by the new features, but skeptical about the quality of the preamps from previous experience with the R24. I resisted the urge to preorder. Instead I waited for some other lab rat to buy one and post a review online. It was a while before I found a review which said anything other than the stuff we all already knew about features. Then I waited for someone to post something more substantial than a stupid unboxing. Finally someone posed a video of the audio quality (of the mid-side and x/y included mics). Slowly but surely, I found a review with an external mic plugged in (battery powered, not phantom). Then I found some brave soul to do a comparison between the Zoom H6 and the Zoom H4n, and I was sold. I showed up at Guitar Center this morning 30 minutes before the door opened and literally bought the very first one that arrived at the store. Took it home, plugged it into a few mics, used phantom power, compared to Tascam dr-40.... Absolutely Blown Away! Exceeded all expectations in every way. Get one! You Will Not be disappointed. On Zoom H6I like the gain about 5 (max) for a clean signal. Getting about -18db. Tascam DR-40 is about a 2 (max gain) for a clean signal. Getting about -47db. I don't own a Zoom H4N.
