Overview

Zoom took the groundbreaking design of its G3 multi-effects pedal and dialed it up a notch with the G5 Guitar Effects and Amp Simulator Pedal. The G5 combines the ease of a stompbox pedal board and the power of a multi-effects pedal and USB audio interface, along with an extra LCD display/footswitch interface, Tube Booster, 3D Z-pedal and additional amp models and effects. While extremely easy to use, the G5 gives you the ultimate in control over your guitar tones for in stage and studio settings.

Up To Nine Simultaneous Stomp
The Zoom G5 offers four large LCD displays and corresponding footswitches that form a graphical interface, allowing you to utilize up to nine stompbox and amp effects simultaneously. The interface has also been simplified with three control knobs for each display. This intuitive design makes creating, saving and rearranging the effect chain of your own sounds a breeze and provides easy navigation in live and studio settings.

Tube Booster For Amp Overdrive
The G5's Tube Booster footswitch allows you to add sudden power and intensity to your performance, particularly when soloing. While its Boost control can add up to 16dB of amp overdrive, the Tone knob lets you control the EQ of your sounds with the added volume. The Tube Booster also offers extra power when recording directly to a line input.

Z-Pedal Offers 3D Parameter Control
The Z-pedal offers 3D action for a new sense of effect control. Not only can you press the pedal up and down as usual, you can also move it side to side. With 20 effects designed specifically for use with the Z-pedal, you can achieve complex tonal changes that are unlike any before. Furthermore, you can assign 3 parameters from any the 120 effects as you like using custom settings. With one foot on the pedal, take off into uncharted territory with creative effect sounds.

Evolution Of Tube-Amp Simulation
A newly developed sigmoid curve clipper re-creates the smooth clipping of a tube amp's waveform. With its tube distortion, the G5 can simulate amplifier sounds, including clean, crunch and full-gain drive tones that are authentic to the original models while maintaining the nuances of picking and strumming techniques.

The Newest Generation Of DSP: ZFX-IV
The all-new ZFX-IV DSP effects processor boasts amazing power and clarity, upgrading everything from sound to functionality and operability over previous ZFX versions. By using 32-bit floating-point processing, the G5 can produce amplifier sounds that are more realistic than ever before.

Super-Real Amp Modeling
The G5's 22 super-real amp models range from vintage to the latest trends in amp technology, each with its own distinct cabinet modeling that can be used to alter its tone characteristics. By combining amplifiers and cabinets, you can digitally design your own custom rig. The G5's modeling technology provides the best tone for both live performance and direct recording.

World-Renowned Stompbox Effects
The G5 offers over 120 diverse types of stompbox effects, including some of the world's most popular guitar pedals and rack-mounted processors. You can use up to nine effects in any combination. The G5's wide range of effects includes distortion, compression, modulation, delay, and reverb. Its HD Reverb uses DSP power to produce a rich resonance that rivals outboard gear used in professional studios and live setups.

Over 140 Versatile Effects On-Board
Select from over 140 built-in DSP effects to create your own sounds on the G5. Try its renowned compression and wah pedals, chorus effects with stunning depth and resonant reverbs. Or let your tonal imagination run free with dynamic flangers, tremolos, harmonized pitch shifters, multi-tap delays, reverse delays and much more. It also includes over 150 patches personally designed by professional guitarists: Richie Kotzen, Kiko Loureiro(Angra), Rob Caggiano(Anthrax) and Mike Orlando. In addition, the G5 can store up to 297 (99 banks x 3 patches) of your original creations without a hitch.

Looper Function With 60-Second Phrase Recording/Overdubbing
The G5's Looper capabilities include 60 seconds of phrase recording and overdubbing. The "sound-on-sound" function allows you to layer guitar sounds as many times as you want in real time and use looped sounds as simple backing tracks. You can even create a "full band" feel with the built-in drum machine and DSP effects for a live solo.

Note: When the UNDO/REDO function is enabled, the recording time is limited to 30 seconds.

Your Personal Drummer
Every guitar player needs a drummer, and with the G5 you can choose from over 40 different rhythm patterns, including 4, 8 and 16-beat, shuffle and many others. The tap key also makes it easy to set tempo and start a one-man jam session anytime.

USB Audio Interface For DAW Recording
The G5 operates as an audio interface, letting you record directly to your computer via USB. All of your sound settings used during rehearsals or live performances can be recorded to your favorite DAW such as the included Steinberg Cubase LE recording software. The pedal's direct monitoring capability eliminates any latency issues, assuring realistic studio conditions and hassle-free operation.

Balanced XLR Output For DI Use
With its built-in XLR output, you can avoid DI boxes completely and directly connect the G5 to any mixing console and maintain a balanced, high quality signal. Its convenient Pre/Post switch can direct an effected sound to the main outputs while sending the original analog guitar signal directly to the XLR output without passing through an A/D converter.

Output Modes For Stage Or Studio
Different output modes allow you to optimize G5's tones based upon its connection with your personal rig. In addition to modes for the front inputs of combo and stack amps, G5 can be used as a preamp when connected to a power amp input. By selecting the direct mode with a line connection, you can achieve a realistic guitar sound that is optimal for live use and recording.

Accurate, Real-Time Tuner Function
The G5 pedal's Tuner function offers smooth, real-time response with precise guitar tuning accuracy. Whether you're in the middle of a performance or practicing alone in your room, simply hold down the pedal's center footswitch to start getting your strings back in tune. In addition, the G5's LCD displays and LED indicators make the Tuner easy to see on a dark stage, where you can also mute the output to tune silently.

Super Low-Noise Design
The G5's super-low noise design virtually eliminates background noise and the ZNR noise reduction removes feedback and other unwanted sounds, providing you with clear tones, along with natural decay and reverb tails.

Super Fast Patch-Change Speed
With the G5's amazing 1.6ms patch change speed, you will never miss a beat. Change from rhythm playing to a solo in an instant by simply tapping a switch.

Optional Expression Pedal And Footswitch
Connect an optional FP02 expression pedal to the G5 and control volume in real time. Use an optional FS01 footswitch to tap the tempo used for the drum machine, looper and effects. You can also use an FS01 to mute the Delay/Reverb input or turn Delay Hold on or off.

Free Edit&Share Software For Mac/PC
Zoom's Edit&Share software, which is available as a free download for the G5, allows you to create, edit and save your personalized amp and effect settings on your computer. Use its amp/effect sorting feature to easily locate your sounds and drag-and-drop options to rearrange patches for editing purposes. With Edit&Share, you can download the latest patches online, as well as share your patches with others.

Better than HD500

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

Had an HD500 for years and was very content using at home jamming along with CD using headphones or studio monitors. I recently joined a cover band, and found out the different world and challenges of live playing. I wanted an all in one solution - home practice with headphones or low volumes, band practice, and gigging. Although the HD500 can do all this, I had only downloaded user presets and found that programming on the fly is a challenge. So, I tried the Zoom G5. First of all, much better user interface. I was able to program many good sounds without even consulting the manual. Live use isn't as good as the HD500 for ease of use, as you can't assign the buttons to any parameter. With the G5, you are limited with the 4 stomp pedals in the order of the effect chain. That aside, sound wise the G5 is better. And in the end, that is what counts.

Sounds Great, a little 'kludgy' to operate.

      By Michael

      from Columbus, Ohio

      Site Member

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

The sounds this pedal makes are (mostly) GREAT!! The amps sounds are very good - I did not compare them to real amps so I couldn't say whether they are accurate compared to the real amps they emulate, but I play straight into a mixing board and they are a very acceptable substitute for an amp. Most of the effects are highly usable (although a couple defy any sort of musical use). Setting up patches directly on the pedal is as easy or easier than other pedals I've used (everything is graphic, there are no 6 layers of menus to work through), and setting it up from the free software COULDN'T BE EASIER: you just select a patch, grab pictures of the amps and pedals you want, and drag them to the patch. You can then adjust the settings for each amp and effect to your taste, rearrange them in any order, all on your computer screen. Any changes made in the software are instantly made on the pedal. The downside is that changing banks is a little kludgy, they could have added $50 to the price and put dedicated up and down buttons on the unit. Also, there is no 'save' button - when you exit a patch, it is in the state you left it - if you have chorus turned on and you exit that patch, it remains turned on. I use the foot pedal for volume, and if I exit a patch with the volume all the way on, it will stay that way when I select it again regardless of how the physical pedal is positioned. Also the tube boost is a waste of a tube (and a button) - there is no 'gain' control for it, so at moderate boost levels it is totally clean - I like a little 'dirt' on solos, so I'm still using an emulated Tube Screamer for a slight boost in gain and volume on solos because all the tube adds is volume. I've only had this a couple of weeks, but it has been reliable so far. I've not used the built-in loop and rhythm functions, nor am I ever likely to, so I'll leave that to others to judge. So overall, I think this is a great sounding device but expect to take a while to get used to it's unique eccentricities. They could have thought out the user interface for playing live a little more.

      Bad Tube Enhancer

      By Lindsey Rodhouse

      from Loganville,GA

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

Very disappointed! Tube Enhancer worked only the first day. after that it just added crackle and popping to the effects chain.Would be a nice pedal if Zoom would correct the problem. I'm afraid to try another one, it might work for a few weeks and then go bad.And I will be stuck with it.Without the Tube feature a lot of the effects are useless they just do not sound right and do not have enough volume level. Do not waste your money and time.Don,t be fooled by the good looks and cool features. There no good if they do not work. In case you are wondering I'm only giving this review in hopes of Zoom correcting this problem. I returned mine after 3 days.I wish it were only a bad Tube, I could have replaced it myself. But unfortunately its in the circuitry. Hope this helps. Never had a problem with my other two Zoom pedals in the past. Very disapointed!!!

      Powerful, solid, useful

      By Leonardo Nestico _

      from Monroe, WA

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

This is a great multi effect guitar pedal for the prize. I'm still exploring the multiple options that it offers, and I'm amazed. It's very user friendly. It has a lot of presets that I really like. It's also very versatile and it offers a lot of possible combinations of pedals and amps if you choose to "do it your self". So, you barely will get bored. Distortions, overdrives, modulation effects, everything sounds great to me! Very interesting 60 seconds loop too, but I still have to keep exploring it. I'm planning on keep this review updated as I learn more, but if you buy this pedal you can't go wrong.

      Good Tone

      By Kerry Cunningham

      from NYC area

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

Finally a digital pedal with decent tone. Although some (many) of the presets are useless, just gimmicky. But tweak the amps and effects and it becomes dynamic and useable. Rearrange the stomps over the footswitches for live work. I was able to tweak the Hendrix preset to become "Hendrix at Woodstock", feedback and all. Very cool. Need to create a Gilmour and Clapton/Cream preset now. Good amp and effect emulations, always could use more of course but many of the popular ones are there and sound close to the real thing. Software works great too. Thanks Zoom. Hours of playing fun.

Very nice unit for the price.

      By Donald Hays

      from Pacheco, CA

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

The Zoom G5: After browsing through the manual I was at home on the G5. This thing has every pedal you can think of all in one place. At first I couldn't get it to sound like I wanted then it came to me that I had selected a cabinet in the amp section (page 3). So, I was getting that cab sound on top of my own physical cab. So, I went in and turned the cab settings to off and Wow!! I believe that the cab settings are their when you go direct into a board or recording without an amp. Who needs to spend more money for something that you can get at half the price and not a crazy learning curve to deal with. I like it so much I went out and got an skb case for as I am on the road a lot. Recommend to a friend, oh yes, with out a doubt.

      Does everything and sounds superb

      By Todd Perrotta

      from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Zoom G5 Guitar Multi-Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

This pedal truly sounds fantastic and has more effects than I would ever need. What really separates this from other pedals (besides the superb sound quality) is the fact that you have 4 LCD screens to see your effects as well as the ability to use 9 at once. I could go on, but I think if you demo this you'll be convinced.
